Popular Post Ken Aldred
1 to 4 Re-read Batman Year One. Mazzucchelli’s art is fantastic, a relatively short and simple story explaining the origin of the mutually supportive relationship between Batman and Commissioner Gordon. ‘He can’t do it alone’ referring to both. Still a classic. JJ-4, paperheart, Raze and 3 others
sevans1979
29-38 Cat woman Vol 5 (Ram V). Decent story, nothing to write home about. Art was pretty good. I liked it, stopping there at 38 as the writer and arc is changing and I only wanted to read it for Ram V. 109-118. Batman vol 3 I really liked the art. The story was pretty good imo. 1036-1045 Batman Detective Comics Vol 3. They changed artist mid way through this batch to Viktor Bogdanovic and wasn’t a fan. They keep changing the artist every couple of issues which is annoying but ,most where good. The story was okay. Typical modern story, nothing that wowed me but it was effective. 30 Comics Ken Aldred and Raze

Popular Post Norrin_Radd
Just finished reading Cerebus #60. 20% through now... High Society was a fun story arc with my favorite characters being Lord Julius (spoof of Groucho Marx) and Duke Leonardi (Chico Marx) with some funny repartee back and forth. I love cross-hatching and there's plenty of it in Dave Sim's Cerebus art. There was an ad for a Near Mint Cerebus #1 for $225 in the back of Cerebus #46. Interesting that prices were so high way back in 1983. I need to find and look through my Overstreet #13 to see what else you could have bought for $225 in 1983... Cerebus meant so much to me as a kid and young man. Dave's personality sorta soured me on the title over time, but I finished it off. Haven't touched it since then, so I'm probably overdue for a re-visitation. There were times when the book got pretty slow, but the high points are very, very high indeed. High Society and Church and State would represent the high points to me, for sure. Ken Aldred, JJ-4 and sevans1979
Popular Post F For Fake
Ok, my reading for 2022 finally kicked off last weekend, we took a trip to our place at the lake, and this time of year there's really nothing to do except stay in, stay warm, read, eat, and play cards. Good times! Amazing Spider-Man by Michelinie and McFarlane Omnibus - this is pretty much a pure nostalgia exercise. Took me right back to middle school. McFarlane's artwork, which seemed so cutting edge to my pret-teen eyes, does not age well at all. There are some inspired bits, but overall it's...not great. That being said, I still had a lot of fun revisiting these long-forgotten stories, and may go ahead and pick up the Spider-Man by McFarlane omni at some point. Blubber HC by Gilbert Hernandez - a collection of Beto's aggressively adults-only 2015 mini-series. Dream like, hypnotic, epically pornographic, it plays like like a nature documentary from an alien world, directed by David Lynch. Not for the weak of stomach or easily offended, but as a long time Los Bros fan, I still got a kick out of it, and laughed several times. Plus it's a pretty attractive hardcover for only $20, which means it was only $15 my my LCS. Not one I'll likely revisit soon, but it certainly is a singular experience. Vampiress Carmilla Magazine 2,3,4,5,7 - So, I just found out about this magazine by "Warrant Publishing", which seeks to recreate the glory years of the Warren b&w horror mags, right down to borrowing the creators from those titles. There are also great covers, new and old, such as rare pieces by Frazetta, Corben's last work, and great stuff by Sanjulian. This is a blast if you're looking to get your bronze age magazine horror fix. EC style short stories with ironic twists, and lots of sexy gals. My shop tracked these down for me once I found out about this mag, so now I gotta track down the rest. Elvira Meets Vincent price 3 & 4 - I'm a huge Vincent Price fan, as well as an Elvira fan. I can't say that this is a necessarily GREAT series, but fans of these performers will find a few gags that will elicit a chuckle. I enjoyed them over all. Blue and Gold 4 & 5 - This series still isn't doing much for me, but as a devoted Beetle and Booster fan, I will soldier on. #4 gets a much needed lift by bringing Kevin Maguire in to draw the flashback sequences, and boy, that hits the old pleasure receptors. Wish he was drawing the whole book, and hell, writing it too. Human Target 2 & 3 - Another one that plays on my lifelong love of Justice League International, only this book is GREAT. A simple, intriguing murder mystery involving some of my all time favorite characters, and the art by Greg Smallwood really is gorgeous. I'm enjoying this a bunch, probably the best thing DC has published in years. Alien 8 - still not digging the Marvel reboot at all, but as a dedicated Alien collector, I still buy it. I'd say this storyline is marginally better than the first one, but still, that's pretty thin soup. Reign of X Volume 3 - still onboard with the HOX/POX stuff. I'm way behind on these, but still love this format for keeping up with the entire X-line. Night of the Living Dead 1,2 3 trade paperbacks from Avatar - I picked these up at a peddlers mall for $5 each. Yeesh. Onto ebay they go, and away from my home! Sir Edward Grey: Acheron - since I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of the industry, it had completely slipped my notice that Mike Mignola had returned with his first fully scripted and penciled book in five years! By the time I found out about it, all of the local shops were sold out, as were most online vendors and eBay (for the Mignola cover. The alt cover is still available on eBay). Finally tracked down a copy at Black Cape comics, which I'd not ordered from before. This is, of course, great stuff, if you're a fan. When it comes to pure comix, nothing much can top Mignola working in his world. So, I think that comes out to about 77 books. I'm going to try to make it this year. Will it happen? Likely not! theCapraAegagrus
Read my first 6 comic books of the year yesterday. Both Haunt of Horror series, Edgar Allan Poe, and H. P. Lovecraft. I wasn't expecting black and white interiors, but that's what they are. The artwork is 'wonky' until the creepy stuff happens, and then it just feels right. I was not expecting their actual stories to be printed in the comics, so those inclusions make these very good IMO. Overall, great Modern Horror comic books. kccoig14, Raze, Ken Aldred and 1 other
srezvan
I'm off to a bit of a slow start, but I know I'll never make it to 1,000 comics in a year unless I lose my job or retire. But I do enjoy keeping track of what I read. 35 total so far this year. First up, I finished up the Doctor Aphra omnibus that I started last year. Overall, I enjoyed it. My only complaint was her interactions with the Emperor and Vader were over the top, after the first encounter between her and Vader which was really good. It was fun to follow this type of character and her ongoing poor choices. A little blah in the middle, but it got really good again at the end. If anyone is reading the new Aphra series, please let me know if it's any good. I read the original House of M series last year. I like the storyline, and this one was a nice addition. Nothing Earth shattering, but entertaining and a quick read if you like House of M. DCeased was either a recommendation from here or the MCS newsletter. I'm not a DC fan. I've probably read fewer than 20 DC issues or TPBs in my life. I read Forever People last year (and it was awful), so at least I knew what the anti-life equation was. I don't think the main DCeased storyline was as good as Marvel Zombies, but I really enjoyed Unkillables. I ended up reading that book in one sitting. There's another DCeased TPB coming out soon, so I added it to my want list. Raze, Ken Aldred, Scrooge and 1 other
Lord Gemini
I'm already falling behind, but I think I can catch up. 62 comics so far, mostly very recent issues (The Death of Doctor Strange mini was great), but I have been trying to catch up with Jason Aaron's current Avengers run. Just finished #38. I have to say, I think I liked the Age of Khonshu arc a lot more than many people. I'm surprised at all the flak it got. I do feel like the run was treading water after the first arc, but once the Starbrand arc kicked off, I started to really enjoy the book again. Ken Aldred
5 to 7 Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire Vols 1 to 3 Reprints of a series that ran in the UK’s Ranger, and Look and Learn magazines, just two pages per issue. theCapraAegagrus
Books 7-16: Fantastic Four #48-50 Fantastic Four #120-123 Fantastic Four #242-244 Some silly stuff from the 60's, 70's and 80's. It was nice to finally read Galactus' introduction, which was a great story overall. The latter stuff has more-refined artwork, but worse plots. "I will leave if you give me my ship back." Popular Post ttfitz
First post of the year in this thread, haven't read a lot, but been busy with "real" books, so hope to catch up soon. So let's see... Black Hammer Reborn #7-8 Still enjoying this one, interested to see where Jeff Lemire takes this. The Unbelievable Unteens #1-4 Another title in the Black Hammer Universe, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and this is one that I thought worked. Strangers in Paradise #1-3, Vol 2 #1-14 I like to say I knew Terry Moore before he was Terry Moore, as we were both members of the Comics & Animation Forum on the Compuserve online service back in the late 80s and early 90s when he was looking to get his book published. When I found out my daughter's girlfriend wanted to try a comic that wasn't your typical superhero book, this was a natural choice, and I gave her a number of the TPB collections for Christmas. My daughter decided to read along, and since I hadn't read most of them since they first came out almost 30 years ago, I decided to re-read it with them. Man, I had forgotten just how good this book was from the very start. Terry grabs you with these characters from the very first issue, and doesn't let go. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll call all your friends, to be completely cliched, but all I can say is, if you haven't read this book, what's wrong with you, dude? Seriously, though, you should read it. So, looks like the total is .... 23. Next up - More SiP, and House of Slaughter (how's that for a contrast?) Popular Post kccoig14
I've been lagging on posting this but here's my list for the month of January of all the comics I read. Got a good chunk of The Sandman read. I figured with the show coming up I would pick it up again from the start. Also read the rest of The Witcher series, it was alright. Read through the whole series of The Damned. I enjoyed it. I wonder if Cullen will ever pick up where he left off with it. Also started rereading The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I read the first two volumes about 15 years ago, read 1910 and then didn't have any desire to pick up anything else from Century. I'm kind of finding myself at the same point now. Im about half way through 1969 and I'm just not liking it. It's dragging, the dialogue is muddy to me and the singing parts are just irritating to read. I started reading these again because I wanted to read Tempest. Someone please tell me it's worth it. I also got on an Avatar kick. Sometimes I just need to read some gory nonsense The highlights of what ive read are always going to be Hellboy and Venom. This arc of Venom has been different but I feel like the new direction is something fresh and I've been enjoying it. Hellboy and the Silver Lantern Club has been excellent, I've really been enjoying the 1 shot stories in each issue. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been amazing as well. If you have not read it yet I'd highly recommend checking it out. Some other honorable mentions for me that I would reccomend is Animal Castle and Echolands. Also, Saga is back! Finally! The best vintage comic I read was Blazing Comics #4. Just good ol golden age fun featuring The Green Turtle. My favorite issue from the month of January has got to be Human Target #4. I don't want to give away to much of the plot but the subtle development of a relationship through this book is something I haven't read/ seen in comics in awhile. I know people either hate or love Tom King, but he's been killing it with this book as well. And the art is so good and very fun to look at. 1/1/22 - 1/31/22 MARVEL -Thor #20-21 -Fantastic Four: Life Story #5 The 2000s -Dark Ages #4 -The Defenders #5 -Venom #4 -Marvel Zombies: Supreme #1-2 DC -Sandman #13-29 -Batman #119 -Joker #11 -Robin and Batman #2-3 -Action Comics #618- -Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #7 -Batman: The Knight #1 -Batman: One Dark Knight #1 -Batman/ Catwoman Special #1 -Human Target #4 INDIE/VINTAGE -Spawn #325 -King Spawn #6 -Hellboy: Bones of Giants #3 -Two Moons #8-9 -The Witcher: Curse of Crows #5 -The Withcher: Witch's Lament #1-4 -Red Ryder (1950) #80 -The Sword of Hyperborea #1 -Hard Looks #1-2, 5 -The Scorched #1 -The Shadow: In the Coils of Leviathan #1 -Rascals In Paradise #1-2 -Gore Shriek #4-6.5 -Dark Horse Presents #117, 119, 121, 124, 129, 137, 140, 146-147 -Kelley Jones' The Hammer #1-4 -Echolands #5 -Predator: Cold War #1-2 -The Damned (2006) #0-5 -The Damned: Prodigal Sons #1-2 -The Damned (2017) #1-9 -Animal Castle #2 -The Bunker (2014) #1-2 -The Empty Man #1 -The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #1-6 -Joe Palooka #7 -Saga #55 -Gunslinger Spawn #4 -Hellboy: The Silver Lantern Club #4 -Blazing Comics (1944) #3 -League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol.2 #1-5 -Stitched #1 -Ferals #1-9 -Night of the Living Dead 2011 Annual -Night of the Living Dead vol.2 #1-2 TPBs/GRAPHIC NOVELS -Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 5 (Detective Comics #116-123, Batman #39-41, World's Finest Comics #25-28) 15 -Superman: The Golden Age Omnibus vol.3 (Action Comics #48-49, Superman #16, World's Finest #) 3 -Falconspeare -Swamp Thing: Roots of Terror (Winter Special #1, Halloween Horror Giant #1, Young Monsters in Love #1, Cursed Comics Cavalcade #1) 4 -E.C.
