srezvan Posted May 15, 2022 Share Posted May 15, 2022 179 comics so far this year. G.I. Joe Vol 3: I think this series is getting better as it goes on. I like the introduction of more familiar characters from the cartoon. Great character interaction and conflict within Cobra. The only goofy part was the introduction of the Dreadnoks and their attack on the military installation. I love the ongoing interaction between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and the glimpse into their past. Hawkeye Vol 6: After taking a short break after volume 4, I got through volumes 5 and 6 pretty quickly. At first, I thought the new team did a great job of of carrying on the great work from the first 4 volumes. The ending and plot of this storyline within the last 2 volumes turned out to be a bit of a dud. Spoiler Basically an alternative future within the comic, almost like a dream sequence. I am woefully far behind in reading. 2022 has been a super busy year, seems like every night and weekend something is going on. About the only time I get to just sit and read is if we head down to the lake, which I did last weekend. I managed to get through these. new books: Alien 9,10,11 - I think this title is improving, but I still wouldn't say it's "good". I am definitely enjoying this storyline more than the first ,but there's still not much here. The biggest knock is the artwork by Larroca, which is really terrible. Not sure how many more issues of this I can read if he's just going to pose NECA action figures and then photoshop them. It's really embarrassingly bad. Blue and Gold 6,7,8 - My two favorite DC characters, and yet, I am relieved that this has concluded. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever read, but our boys definitely deserve better than this uninspired stuff. Human Target 5, 6 -Wow. Really loving this. Smallwood's art really knocks me out. Early on I felt like it was a little too similar to Phil Noto's style, but he's clearly doing his own thing here. This pairs up well with Hard Case Crime novels, if you're a fan. The ending of #6 really took my breath away. Disturbing stuff. I hate that there's going to be a big pause in the middle of this storyline, but I'm fully invested. Elvira Meets Vincent Price - ok, look, this really is more about my love of the titular "characters" than anything else. These aren't great books, but if you love Vinnie P and the Mistress of the D, there are usually enough corny jokes to help the time pass. Otherwise, I can't imagine there'd be much here for a casual reader. old random books: The Last Avengers 1 & 2 - These were in a collection I picked up, and I realized that I'd never read them before. I generally enjoy these downbeat, the future is scary sort of what if/elseworlds tales, and for the most part, I found the story entertaining, if slight. But the art, ugh. I'm all for heavily stylized art, but this stuff was just ugly. Worth the approximate 22 cents I paid for the set. FCBD pickups: Grabbed these at the shop on Friday. I don't usually care about FCBD offerings, but hey, they were free, and they had tons of them, so why not? TMNT - I didn't know what was happening here, and I didn't care. Marvel's Judgment Thingie - I didn't know what was happening here, and I didn't care. Dark Crisis - I figured out what was happening here, but didn't really care. I am a guppy for DC event stuff, but they are so samey-feeling anymore, this doesn't really mean anything to me. Will probably read a collected edition at some point. Donald Duck - he wears no pants! Collections Baltimore Omnibus 1 & 2 NOW we're talking! I'm a total sucker for all of the Mignola Hellboy-verse and Outerverse stuff. I remember reading most of these as they came out, but they didn't make a huge impression at the time. However, in collected form, all in one go, it really made an impact. I really loved this series. The ending seems a little rushed, given the scale of the story, but all in all I still got a kick out of it. Mignola knows what makes me tick; occult, monsters, WW1, all of that great stuff. If you know you know. So that made for 56 comics, bringing my 2022 total to...213! eGad! I liked it, stopping there at 38 as the writer and arc is changing and I only wanted to read it for Ram V. Batman vol 3 109-123 I really liked the art. The story was pretty good imo. 1036-1059. Batman Detective Comics Vol 3. They changed artist mid way through this batch to Viktor Bogdanovic and wasn’t a fan. They keep changing the artist every couple of issues which is annoying but ,most where good. The story was okay. Typical modern story, nothing that wowed me but it was effective. Swamp Thing Vol 7 (Ram V) #1-12 Spider-Man Life Story annual 1 Moon knight vol 9 #1-10 House of slaughter #1 Batman The Long Halloween Special One Shot (2021) Fantastic Four Life story #2 Flash Vol 5 #777-781 This series is getting kinda of boring might drop from pull file Ice cream man #27-29 Loving this series so weird yet each issue pulls me in. Defenders vol 6 #1-5 5 issue mini Meh glad it’s over Death of dr strange #1-5. Not a bad 5 issue mini Hulk vol 3 #1-6 Still on the fence with this. Venom vol 5 1-7 same as the hulk not hooked yet, might drop this series Saga #55-58 it’s Saga, what more can you say great double size issue after a crazy three year break love this book. BKV said in the letter section this will go to 108 issues! Newburn #1-6 Not a bad little crime book I like Chip Zdarskys work but I’m not 100% sold on this one yet Nocterra #1-9 Love the art (Tony S Daniel) and I like most stuff by Scott Snyder. Black Hammer Reborn #10-12 The Quantum Age #1-6 Black Hammer, IMO, works best when it sticks fairly well to the Golden and Silver Age pastiche that Jeff Lemire started with, and it works quite well in these two series. Well, except for the stupid cliffhanger endings of BOTH series. Looking forward to The End of Black Hammer or whatever he's calling the one next year. Knighted #1-5 First series from AWA that I've bought that hasn't been a name I was already familiar with, like J. Michael Straczynski or Garth Ennis. Pretty good, I thought. Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone: Walking Distance, The After Hours, The Midnight Sun I wasn't familiar with these books, but my daughter ran across them at a second-hand bookstore, and gave them to me. Comic adaptations of actual episodes of the show. Great source material, so well worth a read. Midnight Rose One Shot Not Jim Starlin's best work, by any stretch of the imagination, but still a decent read. Nameless #1-6 Grant Morrison, so what else can I say? Love them or hate them, it always makes you think. Quarry's War #1-4 Another Max Allan Collins selection from the Hard Cases Crime series. Good stuff, makes me want to check out the regular books. Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini #1-4 Looked really interesting, and I'd enjoyed the Hard Cases Crime books I read before. This one, not so much. I think if it hadn't purported to be based on some real stories, I might have liked it better. Not All Robots #1-5 A suggested title from my LCS manager. I enjoyed this - but I wish I had read the description of this being Spoiler an allegory on toxic masculinity AFTER I had read all the issues. I kept looking for the parallels, and it distracted from the story. King of Spies #1-4 Another recommended title by the guy who recommended Seven Secrets. Not nearly as good, but still a decent read. Strangers in Paradise Vol 3 #6-24 Continuing from last month, my rereading of the series covers the last of the Image issues, and the return to self-publishing. Terry Moore as always delivers. If you haven't read this book, what's wrong with you, dude? (Imma gonna keep saying it until you all join in, ) Seven Secrets #13-17 As I said last time, this one has it all - ancient secret societies, forbidden love, sword fights, doomsday weapons, intrigue and betrayal, battle royales and combat by trial, snappy dialogue and huge cliches that somehow work. I'm really hooked, and am looking forward to seeing how this storyline comes to a close (I assume) in the next issue. So if I did the math correctly, that puts me at 129 for the year. Yeah, definitely behind. Oh, and @RayJr, just wanted to say, for a while there you were all over the place, which was fun, but then you took a huge swath out of them there Thor issues! Man, respect. We did a little Memorial Day weekend getaway, so I was able to sneak in a little reading. I got through... Love and Rockets 11 - this never lets me down. I've been enjoying Xaime's focus on Tonta lately, and I am looking forward to what comes out of the recent Vivian/Frogmouth reveal. Also, I feel like Gilbert's recent story is finally, at long last, snapping into focus. I have to admit, it hadn't really grabbed me in this volume, and I felt like he was doing his best recent work in the extra-curricular titles (Blubber, Psychodrama Illustrated, etc.) I feel like I'm finding the rhythm on these new Fritz stories, at last. Vampiress Carmilla 8.9. and annual 2023 - You know what you're getting here. The quality of the stories varies wildly, but I get that nostalgic Warren-style charge out of these books. God Hates Astronauts Omni-Mega-Bus - It's been a few years since I read all of this stuff, so it's nice to have every single bit under one roof. This is a beautifully made book full of bells and whistles. Ryan Browne's willfully odd, explosively violent, and gleefully profane exploration of dadaist superheroism is still a real blast. Enjoyed the revisit. Still woefully far behind for 2022, this should put me a 236 on the year. Issue #34 (Shakedown) was a standout issue, especially the ending. I also liked the storyline around Cobra Island - absurd and realistic at the same time. For me, that's a speedy read! I usually only have a little time to read, like an hour or so before bed, so an omnibus can last me weeks, or months. But I blew through this sucker! Thanks to @piperand the rest who recommended it, I really loved it. For me, with Thor, there's the Kirby stuff, and the Simonson stuff, and...that's where it ends. No other runs have really made an impact on me. But I'll happily add this one to the list! Great book. I love the span of time covered in that initial 25 issue run, as the stories jumps back and forth through different eras. Really big, epic storytelling. Terrific comics. The whole thing loses a bit of momentum in the middle, due to, from what I can understand, is a brief diversion into something called "Original Sin", and then some sort of "Battleworld" spin-off of Secret Wars (?) That kind of thing throws a monkey wrench into the proceedings, interrupting what had been, up until that point, a delightful self contained universe. I realize that crossovers are Marvel's bread and butter, but I haven't kept up with Marvel in many years, and have no desire to delve into those stories. Fortunately it doesn't last long, and the back half involves the Jane Foster Thor. I enjoyed this run as well, though not as much as the initial 25 issues. I have no problem with the Jane Foster Thor character, I just don't find the Dario Agger storyline as interesting as I found the Gorr arc, I guess. Regardless, it's still great, and I am eager to see what's next. What's odd is that, to my mind, these stories are "new", but looking at it, it seems like they started at least 10 years ago! Wow, am I out of touch. I'm eager to see where the story goes, and have considered picking up whatever trades/hc's I need to continue the story. However, it makes sense that a volume 2 omnibus would be coming soon, so I guess I'll wait it out. I certainly have enough reading to keep me occupied in the meantime. Magazine sized, showing before and after pictures of some of his work. It was really interesting and gave a great perspective into how the work gets done. He gave commentary on most pages about what he did. GI Joe Volume 5: This series continues to be very strong. My biggest complaint is about how they rushed the origin of Serpentor. It's been a while, but there was so much more detain in the cartoon about who Cobra grabbed and why to make Serpentor. This was just glossed over in the comics. However, seeing Serpentor in action, leading Cobra, was very well done and provided a great contrast to Cobra Commander. I also found it interesting that they switched Dr. Mindbender's name halfway through his first appearance. Destro and Baroness call him Dr. Brain-Wave twice before switching to Dr. Mindbender, then one more mention of Brain-Wave at the end. GI Joe Vol 6: One of the biggest criticisms I've heard from this series is that the story gets kinda silly as they had to add more characters from the cartoon. I really felt that in this volume, with new characters in almost every issue. That's not necessarily bad, but you just get so many so fast without much character development. I also think the storyline with Cobra Commander's son is completely unnecessary. It's also disappointing that the editors didn't bother to clean up some of the lettering - there are pages with missing or partially missing letters, which doesn't make any sense to me. Why not fix that for the compiled edition? Berserk Vol. 1: I'm finally getting around to reading this masterpiece. I watched the anime probably 20 years ago. Very dark and gruesome, but very entertaining. Great artwork and story so far. It's an English translation, but none of the sounds are translated, which takes away from the scenes.
