srezvan Posted May 1, 2022 Share Posted May 1, 2022 158 comics this year. X-Men Wolverine/Gambit Victims Hardcover: very "meh." Some of the artwork was wonky, particularly some of the images of Gambit. Story had an interesting premise (modern day Jack the Ripper), but I the story felt rushed to me to squeeze it into four issues. G.I. Joe Volume 2 (issues 11 - 20): The series continues to be very interesting. This volume introduced more Joes, along with some Cobra greats like Destro and Major Bludd. There's a lot more depth to the story than you get with the cartoon. Kinda like with Lord of the Rings: there was a lot of backstory and intrigue that was removed from the books for the movies. Movies were still great, but the story was much more straight forward. Similar here, where the GI Joe comics have lots of threads and competing interests within Cobra that I think were much more shallow in the cartoon. IMPORTANT: the TPB has a printing error and Page 18 of Issue 20 isn't included. Instead, Page 8 is repeated. If anyone has a photo or scan of issue 20 Page 18, please drop it up here. theCapraAegagrus Posted May 2, 2022 Share Posted May 2, 2022 Books 64-68: The Flash Vol. 5 #70-71 "Year One"; For a definitive superhero origin story, this one sucks. I didn't like the writing to start out the first issue of the run, but it improved. Then, they tied his origin to a future self, and I completely lost interest. I will not be finishing the story. The Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child #1-3; It's become clear to me that Frank Miller cannot write first issues in this century, because I had the same problems with this series as I did with Superman: Year One, where the dialogue and storytelling in #1 is just off-putting, though the final 2 issues are good IMO. It's entirely clear that the artist adored Miller's artwork, because it looks nearly-identical to that style, and I think it's all the better for it. This was a fun read, though I tend to not like politically in-your-face representations, the nuanced satire took some time to pick up on. While I just praised the artwork, I think that it's worth noting in some areas it seems lazy, which is also a criticism that I have had of Miller at times. Spoiler Dave Sim inserted himself in the storyline as "the creator" near the end. Similar to Church & State, the story ended in space revealing answers to larger questions. srezvan Posted May 6, 2022 Share Posted May 6, 2022 163 comics so far this year Hawkeye Vol 5: I just finished watching the Hawkeye series on Disney+ last week. That reminded me that I never finished the Hawkeye series. I read volumes 1-4 last year, and I'm not sure why I didn't read vol 5 until now. New writer and new artist, but this volume was fantastic. Just as incredible as the first 4 volumes. Writing and art flowed so well and the story, driven by the interaction between Hawkeyes, made for a quick read. I can't wait to read the final volume.
