Multiple Copies of a Book 11 11

I have multiple copies of the 1990s books in which my letters appear. Not so much because I like them, but to keep them from being used against me.

My favorite quests are for comics that are so rare you are lucky to see one in a collecting career and owning two is unthinkable. But like everyone else I end up with dupes. Most of the time when I have dupes its just temporary while in the process of upgrading or downgrading (I do both) or picking up multiples of an undervalued comics for short term resale to fund stuff for the core collection.  

But lately I have found myself liking certain obtainable books enough to pick up multiple copies. Usually its because the books have a cool cover. Lately I've also gotten into covers by great comic artists that you can't find in the U.S.:

GA Swedish innuendo (it just looks wrong); GA awesome Australian Hal Foster covers (unbelievably cool - why wasn't there a GA Prince Valiant with Foster art? Puts most everyone else to shame); GA Barks cover for one of his best stories only seen in Italy (who knew?).

And sometimes its because I'm looking for comics off the beaten path (don't mock my desire for less seen Silver/Bronze/Copper comics!) and it turns out you find more copies than you expected:

Iron Giant Preview Variant Cover (yeah that fits into my nostalgia) and Dennis the Menace and the Bible Kids 10 (only 1 copy of either on Census).

As long as you make it interesting for yourself, it's all good.

Yeah if you're hoarding a comic, make sure it's a good one with a good cover and he's done just that!

I tried my hand at speculating last year. I bought multiple copies of Wolverine #6 (first appearance of Solem, whoever that is) and multiple copies of Legion of Super-Heroes #6 (first appearance of Gold Lantern, whoever that is). I sent them all to CGC and the majority came back as 9.8s. As soon as they returned, I put them up on Ebay, and, in their defense, they sold pretty quickly. As I looked back on the experience, I did make a little profit, but I had to buy copies from a variety of sources, such as Midtown Comics. I tried first at my LCSs, but all these issues had sold out when I went to look for them on a Thursday. I had read information about these books being hot on Monday, most likely from a post from GoCollect. At that point in time, I decided that the little profit I earned was not worth the time and effort that I put forth. When I looked at Ebay just now, both of these books are selling for less than I sold them for back in 2021 (most, but not all). From what I saw just now, it seems that the place to speculate is with variant covers. My main problem with speculating is that I haven't bought a current comic book for seven years. I don't know what is going on currently, and, if I find out about a potential hot book, I end up being a day late and a dollar short.

Unless you find it too embarrassing, would you please list your most profitable foray into speculating, along with an example of speculating where you made little profit or actually lost money?

I usually get duplicates because they are different, like a UK, Canadian, or US edition, or a price difference, printing errors, etc. Recently, I bought about 1,500 modern newsstand editions. Many worked out as good investments based on value, some didn't I haven't a profit or loss on any of them yet because I don't want to sell after all the trouble it took to find them. Those things are rare! My most disappointing purchase was probably 5 9.8 copies of She-Hulk #1 for $30. I got them because they are all newsstand editions, but didn't realize that there are no direct editions for that issue, so it is nothing special. For a little while, the comics were worth about $300 each, but that has dropped considerably. That's my disappointment, even they're still worth more than the $6/copy I paid..
