R.I.P. Neal Adams 9 9

R.I.P. Mr. Adams and my condolences to his family.  I was lucky enough to meet him on a few occasions and got the opportunity to tell him how much I enjoyed his work (something he might have heard a time or two).  I would remember my heart racing as I stood in front of this composer (for he was more than an artist) who's single panels were original, energetic and always in motion while ever so detailed in their pencil work.  When I was a kid, his was one of the first styles I could easily recognize and I would eagerly buy anything that had even a hint of his art.  

While I'll always have his work to enjoy and read over again, what I'm remembering now is only that he was always very friendly and generous with his time which, as I now reflect, is the most precious thing he gave me.

Sad news for comic fans. Adams ushered in the shift from the old guard (Kirby et al) to the new generation of comic artists in the 70s through 90s. I would put him as more influential from an artwork perspective than Kirby, as the Adams influence (see Jim Lee) is still strong today. I had a great time with him at a Calgary Expo a decade ago when he spent 20-30 minutes doing a commission for me and talking me through the different techniques he was using. RIP Neal and my condolences to his family.

My favorite artist too.  I started collecting around 1978.  I remember early on thinking any comics drawn by Neal Adams were head & shoulders superior to other artists and I thus coveted anything drawn by him (with great exceptions to say Bernie Wrightson, Barry Smith, John Byrne, George Perez, Steranko ...).  He was a creative genius with an amazing eye for detail and action/drama and his takes on say Deadman, Green Arrow and of course Batman helped define my many hours of reading pleasure as a youth.   R.I.P to one of the greats.

RIP to a true legend. I spent a lot of time with him as a witness over the years and he was overwhelmingly often a charming and affable guy.  It impressed me how easily he grasped the concept of signing and drawing for money at cons.  I bet he made more money drawing and signing at cons between say 2010 and 2019 than he did from Marvel, DC and Continuity combined when he was in his prime. Sad day.

The artist who really got me started as a serious comics geek, from the moment I first read a copy of X-Men 58 while on holiday in 1974, drawn in by his talent right from its brilliant front cover. Who’s illustrated this?  I wanted to see much more.  Then, a short time later, I found his equally-accomplished and classic Avengers 93, and Batman 251, the latter of which I consider the greatest artistic achievement of his entire career; simply brilliant, classic panels and storytelling. 

I always liked talking to Neal at the UK’s LSCC conventions, having, I guess, similarities; a blunt-speaking New Yorker and an equally blunt-speaking northern Englishman.

It’s a downer to lose another of my Bronze Age icons, and someone easily one of the most significant comic artists of all time.

Thanks Neal, a creator I’ve admired for decades, and you’ll be missed.

I just saw this sad news. 

We have lost so many legends in this hobby and he was one of its greatest.

I never got to meet him, but he will certainly be missed.  Thank you, Neal, for all of your contributions.

Was reading the story of Frank Brunners career in Comic Book Artist 6, last night. The kind things that Frank said about Neal and the type of philosopher/mentor he was at Marvel during the Brodsky transition, really gave me a greater appreciation for a guy I already had an immense admiration for. This is a sad day indeed.

Neal Adams was the reason I'd ride my bike to my LCS even when I knew no new comics which I collected were out - I would just go thru the back issues bins hunting for his covers. One of my happiest collecting memories was when I found a beat up GL/GA 76 for a buck or two.

R.I.P. and thank you for all the thrills you gave a young kid when he found your work.
