And for those of you who don't have a Complimentary FG, here's something different for you to look at (available on the Bay from some seller in Germany):

It is amazing how much these two look alike.

I blame the 70's 80's haircut :roflmao:

I believe I ran across the above "Gordon" on a Novaro edition when running my ebay searches from the native foreign sites (you'll get different results from ebay when you pretend you're from that country - for example Mexico is ).  There are some really fun PAINTED recreations of the US covers.  My interests with comics is the pen and ink work and less painting...  but I still like them.  Below Novaro is not mine.

Two versions proven then, so far @Yorick

Well, Wipple's copy still has a different cover because of the white space top right...

3?

Here's #1 - the Dutch (second) reprint of the first Flash which has another nice painted cover:

And here is the original Raymond art page which, it seems, sold for a pretty penny in 2020:

I like that the "Sept" on the cover is still visible.

Good spot Yorick, I missed that - here's my copy, mucked about with:

The tail end of the production, I assume.

They had to modify all of the printing plates from the "Brand New" banner over to "Complimentary".  It probably created too much of a weak spot on the magenta plate and the press knocking thousands of times broke it off.  I'm trying to imagine how the "Sept." and "ICD" are ghosting that top left corner.  hm  Something similar to the pence copies that show cents in the background.

Not sure. Coincidentally, I posted these in another thread yesterday:

1538435049_BM4Black(2).jpg.b3a5e07471c3f14ca0c908b53c3c1942.jpg 505867130_BM4Blue(2).jpg.e5f75109481da282e1e781897f75c24c.jpg

To my untrained eye, that suggests that the 10c on the 'complete' cover is comprised of the blue cyan and black 'K' plate ink. If so, if the black plate price broke off, or was obscured, we'd only see the cyan blue 10 on the finished book. The remaining cents symbol sort of muddies the waters by remaining black, but has clearly slipped, so something went amiss.

So maybe they removed the SEPT and ICD from the black plate of the complimentary print run, but forgot to remove it from one of the colour plates, hence its ghostly appearance:

Maybe it was laid down as cyan, and then the magenta and yellow plates wiped it out with no black plate to accentuate it.

Either that or something else completely! :)

Or vice versa, depending on the order of printing

Who overprinted who there!? (although the US copy has a 12c over another 12c, not 10d)

Work this one out. 10d visible on 12c, 12c blocked out on 10d:

These Charltons could be the result of the US 60c prices featuring on one of the colour plates:

Unless I'm talking untrained nonsense of course.

I really like both those sets.  I keep watching feebay auctions for the first set, but haven't yet pulled the trigger.  I think the second series Defenders line figures are in scale with my toy collection (Super Powers).  5 inch?  They have very nice face sculpts and lots of articulation.

These kinds of things are oddly enjoyable to dwell upon.

The magenta plate had the text still "embossed" and they didn't want to mess with it on that "fade" background (because the text is a solid orange).  That whole section is an orange gradient (magenta printing over yellow).  You have some plates, I believe...  does the magenta have the fade "texture" on it?  Is there any texture on the yellow?  The cheapest way to remove the text is with a chisel to the black plate ("...with no black plate to accentuate it").  :highfive:

I thought I was ordering a different set of Gullivers from Italy, but I apparently bought the set without the Flash Gordon cover.  Still, there was a little bit of Flash material inside, but they loved Buck Rogers more (whom apparently had a running strip in this magazine).

100_1443.thumb.JPG.9d3befd04d4d8f6ec1b59c5ffb608beb.JPG

They are slightly taller than a comic magazine such as Heavy Metal, but I decided to take a comp with Heritage Flash Gordon 11.

You can see in the above photo the heavy stippled cover stock.  Niiiiiccce.

But seriously, I bought them for the Frazetta cover.  :gossip:

I would like to add that I did not realize that Timothy Dalton played Prince Barin in the adorable 1980 Flash Gordon movie. As a matter of fact, I never realized that he did anything else in his life other than his two  James Bond interpretations. Kind like he was born, grew up, played James Bond and then astonishingly vanished in the air for some arcane reason.

Another one from my collection, that I was luck enough to find in a sebo, which is nearly unheard today:flash-gordon-69-capa.jpg.9809c7dc082ec187c8875d3801ab6877.jpg
