Hmmmm, 20k
The bulk of it I'd spend on a nice FF 12 and the rest on 7, 8, and 10.
I think I could probably swing decent upgrades to all four with 20K.

Niiiice - I like your style. I also LOVE your handle. Perfection.

Funny enough, I jusssssst picked up this FF12 from Joe - she’s not as high-grade as your wish list would require, but she presents plenty fine to this Preacher. Thanks again for a fair deal on a great book, Joe! @Math Teacher

Ok new question, if I may…favorite single issue FF storyline from the original Jack and Stan run?

I’m torn between FF 24 (The Infant Terrible), FF8 (Puppet Master), and FF 21 (hate monger). But since I am forcing the issue, I will go with FF 24: The perfect blend of early Marvel superhero glory and remnants of quirky Strange Tales/TTA/TOS-type late 50s sci -fi humored storytelling from Stanley and Jacob.

That's a beautiful copy!  Just received an email from ComicLink that they will have an FF #5 in 9.4 in the next auction :whatthe:.  If anyone has $150,000+ burning a hole in their pocket....

Thanks so much!  It's a big taboo, I know, but I'm all about trimmed/purple labels for these big books.  a) I don't really enjoy it if I can't open it, smell it, read it, etc.  b) the decision between a blue label 1.5 and a purple label 5.0 is a total no-brainer for me c) even if it's still slabbed, there's no qualms in cracking a purple label because the worst has already happened.  For what I paid for this dreamy copy, I could have gotten a blue label I would have had to read like Nicolas Cage in National Treasure.

Landed a big kahuna with the proceeds from a big sale! I'm in disbelief that it's mine.  I think FF #4 is still my ultimate grail, but holey moley

Haven't actually read this thing in a while - congrats again man!!!

Seeing the images made me realize something I forgot: in the early (very early) issues, maybe only in FF5 and no further actually (?) Doom is portrayed like vulture - his body posture, the angles, the actual side-by-side to vulture splash -etc. What's "the deal" with that? I feel like that's an angle that was dropped early on that REALLY helped to add depth to the doom character - I loved those early versions. I wonder why it was dropped...

Funny, I noticed that too!  It's clear DOOM underwent a ton of evolution over the years.  He's very PCH at the beginning, like a Lon Chaney character, which fits with Stan and Jack really trying to figure out how to transition from Sci-Fi/Horror to this new style of super hero.

My off-hand guess is his posture changed when he became a real super-villain

("Definition of super-villain: a killer who loves children.  One who is well versed in destruction as well as buildin'." - MF DOOM)

and so his posture had to be more upright so you esteem him more.   I'll have to go through my run and see if/when it changes.

Probably my favorite embellishment is the version of his origin where he is only slightly disfigured by the accident, but over-reacts to it so much he actually disfigures himself by having the monks fit him with the hot metal mask. It really adds a layer to his character for me that feels really modern to me.  It's the kind of weird internal dysmorphia that drives incels and a lot of other people to aberrant behavior, people that see themselves as a monster and project that onto everyone else.

Yes - that issue where he disfigures himself! Forgot about that - great story as well. I forget what issue that is...you'll get to that in the Fantasticast early on though - they have some REALLY interesting things to say about it - similar to your comments actually.

And agree re the transition from PCH to FF is still happening in FF5.

Also agree re posture and "esteem".

Solid points Sir Corvonie.

You’re both going to love it!

You’d love it more if you were 10, of course. My two best friends and I each bought a copy of the Giant-Size book.
I literally read mine to pieces, then stole Andy’s. I read that copy to shreds, then bought Doug’s for a quarter (Doug guarded his comics better).

Then I learned how to enjoy a comic book without destroying it.

Alex Toth who?  I love these in black and white bc I can find things that really show how Kirby can really do it all.
