Moderns that are heating up on ebay

3,099 posts in this topic

I was speaking from a purist standpoint. It's been clear that the majority of comic readers don't value a single modern issue more so than a TPB/HC. In my mind, that's what separates a modern collector from a modern reader.

Well, I guess that makes me a "modern collector" then, since I seek out the individual issues of a series rather than picking up the TPB/HC.

Additionally, these ALL need to be 1st prints, or it just drives me crazy insane.gif

Even when the 2nd print is worth more than the 1st? (Isn't that the case for Batman #608?)

I agree with above poster. I Never want a second print of a book. I dont care how nice the 2nd or 3rd print is(Cover Wise) or how low the print run is I wont buy it. That being said if I ran across one to flip for $1 I wouldnt hesistate because new comic buyers seem to go crazy for alternative cover 2nd and 3rd printings. The mentality of readers growing up in the 70s and 80s reading books is completely different from new readers today.(Or are there any left? 893whatthe.gif)

TPBs I would only buy if I just want to read and story and not keep it for collecting sake such as LOEG, Watchmen, or LoDK. I dont collect any of those titles, but I wanted to read them cheap just to say I have.

Post the books and their print runs wont take me 10 minutes to do a simple graph.

Agreed - anyone who has ever heard of Excel knows that the graphs are the easy part. Coming up with the print run data is the difficult part.

A link to Diamond's sales rankings for the past couple years was posted earlier in the thread if you guys want it. They aren't print runs, but they are pretty analogous.

I started playing around with those numbers before. With a little help we put the numbers into a graph. I can download the numbers and build the graphs pretty easily... as soon as I get my dead PC fixed that has my download and parsing program on it...

Here's Detective's lean years graphed out.

Did somebody say the last issues of Maxx were good bets?

http://cgi.ebay.com/THE-MAXX-34-IMAGE-CO...1QQcmdZViewItem

I've found that a lot of these hard to find moderns are high-priced because people need them to read/complete runs, which makes them poor choices for CGC grading.

For example - I've sold raw copies of ASM volume 2 19-29 for over $10 per book, but my 9.8 copy of 25 only brought $18. I've sold ASM v2 19 for $30 raw and $45 in 9.8 - not even worth grading. Same goes for the Maxx issue.

Interesting. So Tec is selling double what is was selling a while back. If most of the 30,000 who were buying them last year want to keep their copies and just 10% of the new 30,000 readers start to look for back issues then 893scratchchin-thumb.gifmmm....

In many cases of an expensive or older book, the increase of supply (via TPB) does nothing to affect demand.

That is not true at all, it's just that now, virtually everything is reprinted. But back in the day, Marvel issuing a TPB or reprint did send prices down - I can remember New X-Men demand tanking when Classic X-Men started up, but like I said, circa 2006 - most stuff has already been reprinted multiple times so the latest TPB has no effect.

But even so, you'll still find various older comics noted with "has not been reprinted" and with a higher price. Like some Bark's Ducks.

I'm not much of a non-1st print buyer myself. I have the same practice for TPBs. My rule is, if I buy it in TPB, I'm in pursuit of the individual issues too (expedites my reading and protects the singles).

The Batman 608 is a freak occurrence. I know there are a few others but, overall, it doesn't happen often.

Yeah, that's probably another reason why they were more valued than other second prints. Just amazing covers and the ever popular Lee. There are very rare occassions where a second print is interesting to me. I liked the Battle Chasers #1 2nd print too. Just a solid black cover with a border of the little girl and her glove.

New Mutants #16 is around $15-20.

I've noticed this on someones Ebay Auction

"Please note the Spider-Man logo on the bottom left, not the least desirable bar code (UPC) logo some sellers are trying to sell." confused-smiley-013.gif

Is this actually true or is he just blowin' smoke outta his azzz?

If I had to choose between the Spidey-head and the UPC, I'd take the UPC.

Newsstand books were more likely to be damaged on the rack than direct editions.

A "gem" found from among the hands of the uncaring public is more interesting to me

than a "gem" from a bunch of "read-carefully-then-bag-it-and-board-it-and-store-it-safely" dorks.

True dat! I found a bunch of nice "gems" from the uncaring public at a little Antique market, here's the highlights:

Uncanny #266 (First Gambit) probably a 9.2, bought for $2

Dardevil #181 (Death of Elektra) probably a 8.5, bought for 50 cents

Hero for Hire #1 (First Like Cage) probably a 8.0, bought for $4

Demon #1, probably a 8.0, bought for $4

None really worth getting graded. But they were so much fun to find!

Yup. More likely that dealers have unopened cases of the direct versions as well.
