CL's October Golden Age auction looks to be a good one...

361 posts in this topic

Have there been any reported cases of shill bidding on CLink auctions? Just wondering because at this rate the books I am going after will be beyond FMV.

There was a time when I would say that and question why the bidders need to be so agressive in the first few days of the auction? The pattern makes no sense, especially when observing how many buyers hold their cards on E-Bay until the last few seconds (see CL's bidding style on E-Bay). The bids are more aggressive then I've ever seen on Heritage auctions. Does the pattern make sense? It freightens me. Then again I freighten easily. Anyway, If the price doesn't male sense at the end I won't be seen with a bid. There was a time I questioned the ethics in the hobby. After reading the boards I no longer have any questions.

This site represents a decent cross section of particiapnts. Did anyone consign books to CL or are the books mainly CL's stock?

I placed a few bids already..but merely as placeholders. I think the prices are high already too. But I dont see any malice at work. As for shill bidding? I guess its as possible on CL as on Heritage and Ebay. For what ever reason, I think buyers tend to go a little crazy on CL auctions. I know I have paid more than I would have if I had waited for another copy elsewhere to show up elsewhere. CL just gets good stuff and good prices. Biggest worry to me is whether the books have been juiced or not. Th eprices I pay are under MY control.

One consignor confided to me that they were worried about the response to this auction, but checking out some of their books, it doesn't look like they have a lot to worry about.

As for the explosion of activity, I wouldn't doubt that there is a bit of shilling going on, but ultimately, you pay what you're willing to pay, and if you put in an aggressive bid early, be prepared to pay the consequences.

I may just throw some more bids knowing I will be outbid shortly thereafter, just to make these people pay more.....Argh, I had my eye on some of these books and was willing to pay about OSPG price. But the bid on some of these books skyrocketed way past that a long time ago with a week still left on auction.

Let me guess, this is one of those books? tongue.gif

I have a feeling we will both be outbid on that one.

I currently have 19 bids in.....let's see how many I win.

My guess: 2 (at most).

Good Catch! It pays to be a bit cautious.

One thing to consider is that some bidders are aggressive early on in the hopes of discouraging bargain hunters, thus getting them out of the mix before "bidding fever" takes hold.

I'm sure there are lots of mid-grade, double-cover copies of Tec 91 with the SH distributor mark. stooges.gif

Man, just checked the Superman #6 and it's up to $550 already! WTF! And this is for a 4.5 with restoration. I think OS Guide for an unrestored 4.5 is around $700? I dearly want the book, but I don't like where this is heading... frown.gif

With those two, I'm not quite as shocked...both are HG knockouts. I think the Thrilling #44 would probably grade even higher if not for that little smudge at the top...structurally it looks just about perfect. Anyhow, best of luck... flowerred.gif

100% sure they are the same. I think this points out that the resub is not limited to high grade only. I wonder if it was disassembled.

Ya and I want the Thrilling #44 and the Us Is Ready #1 but looks like both will go above OPSG. Darn it, these profligate spenders are killing me.

Thrilling #44 goes for well over condition guide in any grade. Like I said before, this copy is a 2K book.
