BangZoom
I believe Siegel claimed he never read "The Gladiator." I wonder if he read this review? He definitely was reading Amazing Stories at this point in time. Amazing Stories (June 1930)
Comicdey
I'm learning more than I ever imagined I would about pre-cursor comic history. Thanks again for sharing. Kudos.
Scrooge
Thanks for all the scans, BZ. Nice to have you back around. Here are a couple of strips for Mark and one for Jack. First up some early lie detector sighting from late 1932 / early 1933 in Tracy and a little chemistry for Jack from 1933 -

I know there isn't a great deal of interest in some of the stuff I like to post, but naturally I always hope there's someone out there who will find some of these things as fascinating as I do. Upcoming I've got a 1933 letter from Jerry Siegel to Julius Schwartz.
kimik
This is definitely interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing Bangzoom. I wonder, if any of these Superman concepts had appeared in a comic strip instead of a pulp magazine or sci-fi book, would they have had the impact that Action Comics #1 did? BR-migration
I agree -- these little runs of pre-superhero history are always unbelievably interesting. I've never seen that review and I think you have to be right -- there's no way he couldn't have read it. And a 1933 letter to Schwartz? BZ, you amaze. That lie detector stuff was great too. In a similar vein, does anyone collect bulletproof vest references? Just curious. Brad
BangZoom
I pulled this pulp off the shelf to take a photo for RyanH who just aquired an original Frank Paul illo from this magazine. In addition to the interior illustrations, Paul also drew the cover.
BangZoom
Pretty amazing artwork Paul was turning out. Did he get paid extra for each person he drew?
TheEyeSees
Really enjoyed seeing that cover, Bangzoom, and the close up detail shots are outstanding. Thanks so much. the early 1940's really was a good period for Paul... I really dig those Paul covers for FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES that were the line art covers (vs. the painted covers, which are of course great too). Thanks again for those shots, BZ! selegue
Was this one of the early "atoms are like tiny planets" (or tiny solar systems) stories? Great cover. I haven't been on the boards much the last few days -- catching up a little. That Tracy is one clever detective, checking for sulfuric acid by dipping his finger into it and shoving it under his nose! Maybe he should taste it too.
