I love them giant robots and I like the work of Lilly Renee.

Renee illustrated Abbott and Costello??? :o

I never knew that.

Where have you been? :baiting:

Lily Renée Wilhelms married Eric Peters with whom she worked on Abbot & Costello. In her own words, she states that "Eric drew Abbott and Costello. I drew the girls and everything else and did all the inking." So, all the pretty gals on those A&C covers are Renée's work (thumbs u

Onto something completely different. At the pulp show, I picked up some reprints cheap including this reprint of the July 1939 issue of Black Book Detective featuring "Brand of the Black Bat". Here are the cover and 3 illos showcasing the eponymous Black Bat -

Was there an article in Alter Ego about Renee? I knew she had worked on Planet (and other Fiction House comics) but hadn't checked out the other stuff. The first issue of A and B was based on one of their movies but the third issue seems to be more of a parody of all of those Lost World stories in Planet. The second issue remined me of Tiger Girl. I don't know enough about Abbott and Costello movies to know whether the other stories are based on movies or comic parodies. But the first three issues were great. I notice they spelled her name differently in issues two and three which they corrected to Lily in later issues.

Was there an article in Alter Ego about Renee?

You know so far there's only been a short article on her in # 70 but I imagine someone or other interviewed her at length when she attended the SDCC. IIRC, wasn't there a piece on her in TCJ? The info I posted above is from the most recent issue of AE, # 77, with a focus on St. John and that's why A&C are mentioned therein. I was just reading about it this morning so it was all fresh in my mind. She also did the cover for Kitty for St. John. I believe someone on the boards own a copy: it's a neat hula cover.

Oh, and that cover to A&C # 2 is simply :luhv:

The Black Bat seemed pretty cool. Check out his gloves. Unfortunately my issue is in a bound volume and I can't get a complete scan of the cover. I know I showed this before but ...

Prior to the appearance of the Black Bat that appeared in Thrilling Publication's Black Book Detective, there was an earlier crime solving Black Bat that appeared in six issues of his own magazine in 1933-34.

This is the first issue.

Great looking story you found. :applause:

According to GCD, it appeared in Variety Comics #3.

I Googled the artist, Leo Bachle, and found the following info in the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

Leo Bachle a.k.a. Les Barker (1926 - 2003) was a Canadian comic book artist and comedian.

In late 1940, fourteen year-old Bachle was hired by John Ezrin, the manager of Bell Features in Toronto, Canada to come up with something exciting for the company's growing comic book line. Bachle's character, Johnny Canuck, debuted in the first issue of Bell's Dime Comics, dated February 1941. In the first Canuck story he confronts Adolf Hitler and propelled Dime Comics to become the best-selling comic in the Bell line. Leo became one of Bell’s key artists, drawing characters like Wild Bill, The Invisible Commando, Chip Pipher, Southpaw, Super Sub, and The Brain. Bachle's success led to the company hiring a number of new, young artists, including Ross Saakel and Jerry Lazare.

Bachle's character, Johnny Canuck, was considered invaluable to the war effort. Apparently, the Canadian government refused to grant Bachle a visa to move to the States until he’d completed a backlog of Johnny Canuck adventures for Bell Features.[citation needed] Canuck remains his most enduring creation.

After the war, Bachle changed his name to Les Barker and gave up drawing comic books. He became a well-regarded comedian and toured the globe performing his unique comedy act.

Canada Post put Johnny Canuck on a postage stamp with other Canadian comic book heroes, such as Superman by Joe Shuster, Nelvana of the Northern Lights by Adrian Dingle, Captain Canuck by Richard Comely and Northguard by Mark Shainblum (but not Alpha Flight by John Byrne, often credited as a Canadian).

Leo Bachle died in May, 2003.

In April 2004, Leo Bachle was among the first batch of Canadian comic book artists inducted into the Joe Shuster Awards Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame.

It's amazing how similar the Black Bat is to Batman. I wonder if there was litigation over those similarities back in the late 30s or in the 1940s like there was over Superman/his army of imitators.

According to Wikipedia

Both Black Bat and Batman hit the newsstands around the same time, and both claimed that the other was a copy. The threat of lawsuits ended when DC editor Whitney Ellsworth intervened. Ellsworth had once worked for the Black Bat's publishers and brokered a deal that allowed both characters to co-exist peacefully. It is probable that the costumes of both characters were copied from the 1933/34 Black Bat series which featured costumed illustrations of the Black Bat inside the pulps though actually the "Black Bat" in the stories was indistinguishable from any other man in his choice of clothing. Batman creator Bob Kane always contended that the only bat-like man he had seen was the villain from the 1930 film, "The Bat Whispers". However, the Black Bat did have a permanent influence on the Batman: chief Batman scribe Bill Finger called Kane's attention to the unique guantlets the rival character wore. Subsequently, similar "fins" were added to the Dark Knight's gloves which remain to this day.

That is too cool BBgun!! I really like the rendering on the Black Bat on the cover... you can imagine thats how BATMAN would have looked if he had been a pulp character!!

Aside from the reprint I posted above I have the May 1941 issue. The Black Bat is only seen hovering in the cover (as he does on most covers) but I also scanned a full page interior illo -

Y'know, I'm glad that Batman didn't borrow Black Bat's clown collar.

jaw.gif Wow!!!

Congratulations, man! That is outstanding - well done! :golfclap:(worship)

Oh, thanks but no thanks! It isn't mine. I just quoted it wrong/goofy. It is from about 3-4 pages back in the thread. I admire the book for all the reasons you know but also due to the lovely overhang.

TUPENNY loves overhang in Pulps!! :hi:

PS I've got my eye on a copy for myself :wishluck:
