Come on in the water is fine.
This year the main convention is located in the newest edition to Philadelphia's convention center of off Broad Street. I remember in years past, waiting outside, to get in thinking what if it rains? Last year they rectified that by having the line snake up and down a hallway before entering another room. This also helps in the heat. This year they rectified the line problem by the mass amount of space.
The con started off slow for me, I made a promise to someone to pick up the Walking Dead variant. He even went so far as gifting me a Groupon for the paid admission on Thursday. Even though at this time I was waiting for my credentials I did have a secondary plan to get in. The night before I placed everything by the door doing my best to make sure I had everything I possibly could have needed. I checked off a list.
Books for Stan Lee to sign. Check.
Books for Bob McLeod to sign. Check
    Money. Check. Double Check.
Bag and Board for Walking Dead comic book check.
Cgc books for possible pressing. Check
    Camera. Check
Yup, I was ready for the first day. I took public transportation, which is the easiest and cheapest thing to do. I was on my way. Three blocks away my guy dropped. I forgot the Groupon. Suffice to say with everything that I was carrying I went to my fathers first and dropped what I had off, then made the trek all the way home.
Even on the first day I knew there would be a line. When I got back I had to wait thirty minutes just to get the ticket from the Special tickets section and that's when I found out that the Walking Dead only comes with full admission. At least it was a nice day.
I'm on my way back for the second day of the event, the first real day. the empty signature area will be full this time. I even brought clothes with me to stay downtown this time. I figured it would be easier to stay after the "Boardie" dinner than to go back home. I made the list again.
Comicbooks to look over for pressing, check
Cgc books that weren't looked at the previous day, check.
    Books for Bob Layton. Check.
    Money, check and double check
    Clothes. Check.
    Toothbrush. Check.
    Clothes to sleep in. Check.
    Cameras. Two. Check
    Charger cord for iPhone. Ch...

    Or I could strike now.
I started adding my books I had graded from Wizard World Philadelphia. The first time I tried the books were ineligible for their appropriate spots. I only tried my New Mutants #1. J figured if that one was denied, they all would be, including the signature series books signed by Bob McLeod.
Normally I'll get an email stating it was accepted but this was not the case this time. I let the time lapse for the registry awards and finally decided to add them today. I am now only one point behind Bagofleas in the New Mutants registry, not only with first place in striking distance but mine for the taking if I submit my 9.6 SS copies if issue 58 and annual 4. But since Bagofleas started his set before I started mine he decided he was only going to list 9.8 with white pages or better, could I do no less?
There are certain semantics because if you look at my issue sixty-two it has off-white to white pages, but since it is signed I consider it better than a 9.8 WP. I do hope one day to fix that. Even my issue sixteen has the same page color distinction, but this one is signed by Sal Buscema. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to have him sign a book. It was a year wait and I have three more waiting for the opportunity.
Over the next few weeks I hope to fix my sets. To clean up any doubles that might be adding to my total registry points. I was thinking of deleting sets and starting from scratch but the notoriety I would lose and those small little icons would be gone. The New Mutants is the bulk of my points and I'm currently on the shy side of 30,000. Isn't that something to celebrate?

Ps, the following is an excerpt from a closed file I found on Bagofleas
    File and Case #421-40
Subject no longer answers to his given name and will only respond to either Bagofleas or "Master and Surveyor of all given things above and below the Earth". The latter was actually shortened from its original title when he had to ask to go to the bathroom and was trained to go after a positive reply and his chosen name. The guards decided against using Bagofleas when the subject simulated the STD symptoms of crabs on numerous guards. Occasionally a mwahahaha could be heard. This occasionally caused undue duress and soiled linens. Eventually a cease fire was called between Sgt. Casper O'Reilly and Bagofleas for the only reason that Bagofleas liked the Sgt.'s name. This also lead to Operation: Little Dot.

This is what I was able to find so far. I'm looking into Operation: Little Dot now. More on this as I find it comes to light.

    Or Gaining first was worse.
I didn't really didn't mind losing my first place status, that's not to say I won't be trying to attain it back. In fact I have currently pre fumigated not only my residence, but airports, train stations, and multiple delivery service hubs. The first time I wasn't ready, the second time I will be. But lets do the numbers, Bagofleas had a gem mint #1 and until I have one or something better my registry spot will always be behind him.
When I gained first place I still was learning who Bagofleas was. Would he be upset that he lost first, would he decide not to talk to me because I said something wrong. I have already had someone block me for a comment I made. Of course I didn't realize it would offend. I tried to apologize but it wasn't answered and I feared that maybe taking away a first pole position of someone's favorite set would put him over the edge, you know to somehow train fleas to shave a cat.
Eventually an honest friendship began. First place is his and with all the books he still has at CGC will be his for a while and I'm ok with that, besides I think I might spend my money on something older, like some Harvey Casper books.

Or by the way he has Fleas
The registry award(s) deadline has passed. If you wanted your set to be acclaimed and didn't make it this year, you'll have to keep perusing the auctions and conventions for your graded CGC books to add to your sets for the registry awards for 2014. If you were sniped like a last second bid on EBay, then "it is what it is", but I wonder, if this as collectors is what we strive for? Do we try to edge out our competitors for the top spot, to say we are first, or to show everyone in the collecting community that we have the chops to take the coveted first prize?
Last year I took it from Bagofleas for the New Mutants set. I accomplished this months in advance. I always assumed it would be this year that he would regain that title back, and it was, but I didn't expect the underhanded, despicable, and diabolical way he went about doing it. I mean seriously I called this guy a friend.
But how did he do it? Did he gain signatures on his books? Did he fill holes in his collection? Does he have only one of two New Mutants #1 in a Gem Mint condition....well yes, but that's not how he did it. The first thing he did was gain my friendship. This is easy, but over the past year as I entrusted him to many a personal thing, I never thought he would do what he did. This ex CIA operative, who worked with MI6 who sometimes resides in Area 55 (bet you didn't know there was an Area 55, that's how secret it is) was secretly gathering data to bring me down. I personally think that the day I surpassed him on the registry an evil cry came from his lair as he vowed to not only take back the top spot, but to end my meager existence, to destroy me in the most creative way possible.
I'm pretty sure at this point he decided to break me, to steal away what I worked so hard for and at only $2.83 an hour. The strenuous hours, the walk to distant lands to find what is the Mecca of comic books and create the best set for the New Mutants. During these travels I met the RonnyLama who is good Karma personified, and he urged me on to not decimate any opposition but to embrace them. This is how I treated Bagofleas, like a brother, not the intricate weasel of a circus ringmaster I found out that he was. I thought the friendship Bagofleas gave me was both true and genuine. He fooled us both.
Over the past year I never understood how Bagofleas travelled as much and how he made his money. His modern age collection grew along with his love for Harvey books. I should have begun to realize his affinity for Casper the Friendly Ghost was black ops code for CFG which actually stands for Camouflage Field Guide, which are in actuality wet works team members.
Suffice to say, he might tell you he delivers pizzas but he actually created and runs the best Flea Circus in the whole Northern hemisphere. He travels all over the world showing crowds his trained fleas. I was in awe of his patience and tenacity in bringing joy to the masses, I thought he was a saint.
He surprised me the other day, telling me he would be in my area. The trip would include a visit to the Children's Hospital a short drive away so he could entertain with his Flea Circus. I told him we should meet since he would be in the area but he apologized and told me that it was for the "Make-A-Wish" foundation and he then had to fly out to Toronto for another last wish request. I know, Good Samaritan, right?
So here I am with minutes left and I'm still in the top spot, and after finally getting busy at work I check the registry a few hours later and see my spot is no longer the top spot...I'm now number two. My legs became weak, my heart buttressed against the cavity of my chest wishing to burst free. As I said I knew it was inevitable. I sent a congratulation to Bagofleas by text and his reply was "Damn Straight person_without_enough_empathy". I thought he was texting someone else and I interrupted in the crossfire. I replied back, again and again but he never answered. I just guessed he was busy setting up his Flea Circus.
Finally after a grueling thirteen hour shift I made it home...to a busted open door. The door knob lay on the ground and I pushed the door open with my foot. I knew I had to call the police but first I had to check on my companion, my cat, Boots.
His incessant cries told me he at least he didn't run away, that he was indeed still in the apartment. I found him locked in his carrier and after I took him out I realized he was shaved like a newly hired contract porn starlet.
I looked around and didn't see anything missing, not at first. I had money lying around which wasn't touched, my comics were still beautifully displayed, and my electronics were still hooked up. The only think that was curious was my computer was on. I adverted my attention back to my cat when I noticed it, his flea collar was missing.
I went to my computer, touched the keyboard, bringing the monitor out of its hibernation sequence. I could have sworn I turned it off. Suddenly a video played, it was Bagofleas. He proceeded to tell me that the encoded USB would destroy itself and I better pay attention the first time, because it would delete itself. He informed me not only that our friendship was a farce, but it was only an excuse to profile me and learn what passwords I might use for all my the websites I visit, like HA.com , eBay, and of course the CGC registry site.
In the final minutes of the registry competition he took off every single comic book I had in the New Mutants set to assure himself first place. I swear he couldn't stop laughing and my cat became shaved bare in front of the camera from some unknown means. Bagofleas pulled on his stereotypical mustache pulling it into a curved tip and the red top hat put him over the edge, even the laughter helped.
He even went so far as to tell me that if I ever pass him again in the registry that he would make sure to use my cat as his new home for fleas to train. This man had no soul, he was evil.
I shuddered and picked up my little guy, realizing he is indeed fat and not just covered with hair and cringed at the threat. But I won't be bullied, I will not cajole to fear. I challenge you Bagofleas, oh yes I challenge you and your ex ops, and your fleas, I will not run and I will not shy away. This I vow.

    or That's it from ECCC
Although Wizard World had on-site grading, my books, and those entrusted to me should have been back the last day of the con. They weren't. Stan Lee signed a ridiculous amount of books. I watched as someone placed a suitcase next to him and started to unload it. Whether they were all for CGC or not I don't know but I did see a few get picked up. Apparently, the batch my comics were in were the second day he was there...after the cut off. Now as I wait I have to send off an email to find out how long. I hate that because I feel like a nuisance, but if they were just my books I wouldn't care.
I like being able to check on my books. To see when they are received, graded, and shipped. Well, suffice to say my last invoice from ECCC has finally changed from "scheduled for grading" to "graded". These were books i brought for Chris Claremont to sign. Some of the earlier issues of X-Men. 96,100, and 104. Suffice to say, I am still hoping I find out what my Daredevil #2 is before I find out what the trio of x-books are.
I still have more books out there, but they are sitting waiting for conventions for signatures. This includes annuals #2 and #3 of the New Mutants, both my 9.8's and my original copies, but as far as what CGC has, I am just waiting and everyone in this community knows how long a wait this could be.

Or Why couldn't the Signature Series be a different color?
Let me explain why I hate yellow. It's the bees. Yup, those little things that pollinate the flowers and if were to go extinct, theoretically, the world would no longer be able to support life.
It happened in 1980, when I started to hate yellow and the comic books I owned were things to keep me occupied rather than collected. I was sent away to camp for the first time. We were given a list of things we could bring, and when I say we, I mean my sister, mother, and I.
My sister helped me pack with strict instructions not to put anything in the duffle bag that wasn't on the list. My comic books made there way back under the bed. All my clothes were packed together, matching outfits with matching socks. Yes, I had those tube socks with the colors, including my favorite color, yellow.
I didn't want to go to camp. I wanted to stay home in the comforts of my own home. Lets face it, I knew I'd be homesick. My sister reassured me that going to camp would be fun, and time away from mother. Suffice to say after getting driven to the camp grounds I was ready to go home... Which was three weeks away.
About a week later, I was settling in and sporting my favorite outfit. And if you ever seen the movie "Meatballs" that world be a great descriptive account of the way my camp was. My tube socks were pulled as high as they could go. The double stripe of yellow shining brightly. My yellow tshirts and "gym" shorts all matched the same yellow. It's probably the only time I have ever been color coordinated in my life.
I walked past the pool approaching what was known as the hard courts. I can remember the grass, the dips, and the small flow of water that if it was anything more it would be a creek. It might very well have been at one point, when I jumped over the sunken earth, it happened. The pain was excruciating.
I was stung. Not once but thrice, simultaneously. This might have been the first time I ever got stung by a bee, and at the very least it was most assuredly the first time I got stung by multiple bees at the same time. I was instantly in pain. I dropped to the ground and since I was my sisters little brother someone ran to get her while I was taken to the infirmary.
I had to hold ice on the stings, two were under my sock on my left leg, one by the ankle and the other closer to the calf. The third however was the coldest spot I ever held ice on. Suffice to say my sister made her way to the infirmary and I told her I got stung. She asked where. I told her twice under my sock and since I didn't know the word testicles I told her my balls. If I wasn't still sore I probably would have laughed at saying balls to my sister. Being eight and away from home I learned many a new terminology.
Fortunately I wasn't allergic, getting stung by one bee is annoying but three at the same time made me hate the color yellow. I threw that outfit away never to wear the color again, my new favorite color became red, which changed in my later years. To this day I still don't wear yellow, I'm not afraid of bees but the memories still sting, pun intended. And as I typed this out on the yellow note pad that iPhone has pre installed I realize any yellow brought into my home is purely unintentional, much like the signature series labels I have grown to accumulate.

    Or five times two
I love top tens. The main reason why is after 75 plus years of comic books making its way onto newspaper stands all those years ago there are so many different titles to see. During the boardie dinner in Philadelphia I was privy to someone's pride and joys. They were AMAZING.
I even decided to pick up my first golden age book even though it wasn't the book I was originally planning about. I even learned a bit more about the atomic age of comics. These journals and Instagram has been showering me with new covers. Unfortunately this might very well change the way I collect comic books. I love the copper age. This was the age that had the greatest effect within the comic market which hasn't been seen since the end of the atomic age. This time it was greed, multiple covers, and get rich quick schemes rather than senate hearings.
I wrote down some lists including my top ten that would survive a purge, I made ten of them (go figure) and will write them in two parters rather than individual journals. I'm sure I would have no problem writing ninety journals but eighteen could be so much more precise. The next top ten list will be my favorite eighties covers. Of course the kicker is going to be I cannot place New Mutants #15 in any of my lists. It wouldn't be fair if you always guessed what my number one was.
Oh and as for the amazing in all capitals, it wasn't a hint that they were Amazing Spider-Man titles, it's just that the colors were vibrant and fresh, so fresh that it pushed me over the edge to start budgeting for a couple of them. What books changed the way you collect?

    Or A Few more Signatures
I didn't think anyone would be there Thursday. I just assumed the opening day would be a day I would learn where everyone was. The back portion of the room was empty. Norman Reedus was to be in the back right corner while Stan Lee was to the left, but the person I was looking for was in Artist Alley. I had four books for the New Mutants co-creator to sign, three of which were cracked slabs.
A few days before at three o'clock in the morning I nervously cracked issue three. This was originally purchased through World Wide Comics. I was nervous not only about cracking it and losing the 9.8 status, but its Golden State label. Stephen was nice enough to let me know that he would get me stickers for any book I bought from him that were Golden State Books. This also included the Special Edition I sent in for the NYComics Masters Signing, which returned a triple signature 9.8
Nervously I awaited the few days, not the months I normally would. This of course is the best part of Wizard World, CGC's on-site grading. The Stan Lee signatures unfortunately were placed in the second signing group, not enough time to get back to CGC for grading. I would have to wait for my Daredevil #2, New Mutants #15, and one other book. However, this is about Bob's signature on my three New Mutant books.
The first one Bob went to sign was issue three. I hoped a solid red on black would highlight the eyes of the creature preying on Danielle Moonstar. It didn't work, we changed to silver and the first "B" shimmered in a metallic red and finished bright and shiny.
Issues ten and seventy five we picked gold, or bronze, I forget which. Ever since ECCC I have been wary on what colors to choose and where the signature would be best. I even went so far as marking the slab and seeing what looked good. If I ever crack these...again, I know Chris Claremont likes to sign on the title.
It was Saturday, two days after I had Molly witness the artistic scrawl of Bob McLeod on all four books, that I am happy to say that the three I opened returned as a 9.8 signature series.

Or what about what Lee K gave me?
I did not expect Bob Mcleod to be there on Thursday. I figured this would be the day to walk around and figure out where everyone was at, but there he was, sitting at his table, drawing. I cracked a few slabs in hopes that not only his signature would be placed upon the cover, but they would retain the coveted 9.8. I also decided, courtesy of Lee K to have a nice copy of the New Mutants Annual #4 signed by the creator of my favorite title. I knew this would have to be pressed; the square bond books always seemed more difficult to attain a 9.8, this one in particular.
I headed over to CGC right away I knew the quicker I had the books in, the quicker I would get them back. I knew at some point CGC would end their onsite grading and then I would have to wait. I met Molly and we walked over to get the books signed. As I always do with the witnesses I ask questions. In this case why was the boxing practices of the shipping department slacking. It as a quick walk over to Bob and I placed my books in front of him for his scrawl. I also decided to ask him if he had time for a small interview and I would be back after dropping the books off. He said yes.
I was probably just as happy as Bagofleas was down in Florida, I even showed him the picture of his signing on the back of a particular Marvel Graphic Novel, and he did indeed remember signing it. My issues for the New Mutants as follows were 3, 10, and 75. This went straight to the Signature Series part of the table, but for the other book, the annual #4 I had to take to Marie. I have always liked dealing with this woman because she was always pleasant. She helped me out with the first book I entrusted to her and answered questions about two others.
One of the questions was what happens after the pressing. She told me everything would be taking care of, and it was, with one minor glitch. When I went to pick up the book on Sunday my beautiful graded copy of the New Mutants came back...green. It recieved the qualified label. I was shocked, and made sure Mike, who was handing me my books knew that I had it signed here at Wizard World and informed him that Molly did indeed witness it. This story is longer than it should be but suffice to say Mike was very quick in taking care of the situation and made sure I was able to take the book home a signature series label.

    Or a Slight Dissapointnent
At Wizard World I was surprised that Bob McLeod was already signing on Thursday. I was hoping to get my signatures for him on Friday for fear that I wouldn't get them back in time. So after placing the books in front of Bob I thought that would be the greatest color on the black portion of the cover of New Mutants #3. I was wrong.
The red apparently didn't want to show up. I opted for silver instead, a color I usually prefer. The beginning of the B was traced exactly and the color scheme created a hell of a hue. The two colors created a vibrant subtle overtone. The second book I had signed was issue ten and third was a book so many issues later, number #75. There was a fourth, but as the first three were cracked 9.8's this was a raw book sent to me by Lee K.
I also turned in two books for corrections. I didn't know if they would be able to fix them on site but I turned them in anyway. The next day I was told that they could. I was overjoyed the next day when they said Yes. I didn't bother asking for them or any of my books that day. It was Saturday I was both overjoyed and upset.
I already told Bagofleas my grades so I'll post them here for everyone else to see...
    # 3...9.8
    #10...9.8
    And
    #75...9.8
As far as the annual is concerned, it is mark graded but the grade has not been posted. I'll know by the end of the day.

Or should I just wait until tomorrow?
I'm not going to say CGC is not busy but since I started going to other cons I can at least say they are not as busy as I've seen them before. I have yet to check on my books because I'm afraid of a negative answer. I'm sure they will be graded before the end of the weekend but I can't wait until they are back in my hands.
I dropped off two mistakes. One was an X-Men issue mislabeled and the other was a Marvel Team-Up issue that negated to mention the double cover. I wasn't sure if they would be able to encapsulate it here or if it would make its journey southbound. I was pleased it would not.
Four books were taken to Bob McLeod for the signature series. Three were cracked 9.8's, and the fourth was a gift from Lee K. to me, an annual number four which I hope beyond hope I get a 9.8, and yes I had it pressed. The other book was pictured in a previous journal, a cracked universal blue label. Then my New Mutants 15 and one other book.
I might try later today to see if they are ready. I'm even going to try to get a few Walking Dead graded, so hope beyond hope I get 9.8's. of course I'll just sell them and use the proceeds for more books.

    Or this man can entertain
I knew right after anything I do with CGC I was going to get a picture if me and Stan Lee. I was going to do it by myself but asked my best friend, who is promoting For_Zombies, and asked him if he would join me. He didn't have to wait in line nearly as long as I did. Once the picture was done I purchased a few comic books and made sure I had enough time for the Stan Lee panel.
This was my third one, the second here in Philadelphia. This year Stan wasn't late. His emcee announced him almost as we were all done sitting. Then two line formed and the questions began. One question was what was Steve Ditko's last conversation with you? Stan jovially replied he said "I Quit".
And as I write this Kevin Sorbo walks right past me. It's amazing how popular a person could be and still walk around in fingered....anyway this is about Stan Lee. The Ditko's question was answered delicately, and Stan proceeded to say he had no idea why he quit.
In another question the emcee replied "fabulous" which Stan corrected as "fabulously, fabulous is an adverb". Of course I recorded everything...on my iPhone, so the sound could not be heard to well to remember what was fabulous... Or rather fabulously"
What he did say, as he confused the days thinking it was Sunday, he mentioned tomorrow(Monday) he would be filming his cameo for the next Spider-Man movie. Oh and his favorite cameo...he doesn't have one, he loves all of them.
    Time to go eat

    Or...and...
The one great thing about knowing people that have booths is you have a place to leave your stuff. The one bad thing about knowing people that have booths is they can ask you to watch their booth. I'm sitting here at one in particular while the two are checking out a panel.
I know a small bit about their production but I'm mostly just winging it. Fortunately I was there to help film so I know the basis of the projects. I can sit and relax until someone looks interested in it.
My books are already at CGC and another book was purchased for a Stan Lee autograph and grading. Fortunately Comics to Astonish has always taken care of me.
There is still room to walk with out bumping into people but a steady flow is walking around the sales floor. Between writing I am discussing the aspects of being life challenged. To understand what I am talking about please check them out on you tube www.forzombies.tv and help support their antics. You can also find them on Facebook if you look up For Zombies.

or How will I get to see the Wizard Now?
I don't like to trash talk, I don't like to say bad things about people and it has nothing to do with karma. I just don't like when it is done about me so i won't do it to others. It is that whole golden rule thing. I used to write for Comicbooked and stopped quite a while ago. I felt that I would rather write on my own merits. I started to write more on my blog, hoping for more followers. I did my own thing so to speak.
When I applied for ECCC the approval was immediate. I was ecstatic. I made my plane arrangements immediately. Fortunately I had a place to stay. Wizard World's stance was more like; we will let you know two weeks before the event. I was OK with this because it is my home city. I sent an email off any way to Jerry Milani, the man in charge of PR and although I met him in years past, I am sure I am just another face. I hoped to get some kind of answer. Unfortunately at this time it seems that answer is negative.
This is disheartening. I was waiting before writing anything because I felt that I would rather continue writing what I was doing, especially like things with top ten which I will get to my number four spot. I felt without being accepted to go that I would not spend my time writing and promoting an event. Will I still go, yes, of course, Stan Lee is there, but do I have to stay my tongue. I'll use their hashtag on Instagram and Twitter. I will still write about all the good things I see, but I wonder why Wizard World went from a great comic book convention with Marvel and DC to a pop cultural event.
Sure both are massive in their own right and with sales being through the roof, Wizard World must be doing something right. Here's my take on it.
    http://ashotofcomics.blogspot.com/2013/05/wizard-world-2013-roundabout-preview.html
I am not negative, I don't want to be. I won't claim sour grapes or say how dare they. This is their choice if they decide not to release a press pass to me, but I ask you, please come along. Play along. Let me know if I can cover the event with justice. On this more than anything else I ask for your feedback. Yes I am a collector, just like you, but I am a writer too, one that loves to write about what we all collect, shot glasses...I mean comic books, specifically graded by CGC.

    Yes, but only to me.
This book will never be worth anything to anybody except me. I decided to get all my New Mutants graded regardless of what they would attain. So far, the lowest grade is a 4.5 SS and the best of them I pulled off the racks was a 9.8. The two most sought after issues both are graded a 9.6.
After originally having my issue fifteen graded, it returned a 4.5, a grade that surprised me for no other reason then it was probably my most read book. I knew it wouldn't be above a five but I thought it would be closer to a 3.5. After turning it over to get signed by Chris Claremont it returned a 4.5. It might have received a one point increase for the registry.
Today I am on my way to Wizard World. Stan Lee will not be there today, but he will be there on Friday for signings and photo ops. I plan on getting another picture with him in my hometown. This will make four and although it will never surpass the first one I took, it will add to it. The signature on my book will be taken care of by someone else. But why have Stan Lee sign a book he had absolutely NOTHING to do with.
I have a goal. On the first page of issue fifteen is a list of names who are credited one way if the other, Stan Lee is listed as "Presentor", and Bob McLeod also listed as "created by", and since I already have Chris Claremont on the cover, what's two more even if they has nothing to do with this book, and while I am at it, why not have it personalized. I'll have a picture as soon as possible. Now, the next person will have to be Sal Buscema.
Oh and the cost is right there next to my father saying "what are you F...ing nuts...for a comic book?"

Who is the most popular character to come out of the eighties?
If Wolverine is arguably the most popular character from the seventies and Deadpool is the most antagonistic character of the nineties, and the first decade in the millennia being too close to gage a lasting character, who can lay claim to being the most popular hero or villain of the eighties?
Rogue appeared in Avengers Annual #10. Her humble beginnings in the Brother Hood of Evil Mutants, under the tutelage of Mystique was short lived when she was welcomed into the X-Men's fold with Uncanny X-Men issue #171. The promise of control over her ability by Professor Xavier swayed her from the "dark" side, a great "What If?" tale would be if she stayed with Mystique.
Venom pulled his weight by being the first Spider-Man villain that could easily best Peter Parker's spidey sense. The popularity of Todd Mcfarlane's second most popular character helped define the artist as a force to be reckoned with. Venom became the epitome of the anti hero that the Seventies Punisher was once known as. Now, decades later and no longer forged with Eddie Brock, the symbiotic alien from the Beyonder's battle world merged with Spider-Man's biggest fan Flash Thompson to create a one man wet works team.
Walter Simonson also wrote one of the best Thor comic books without the titled character. An alien from a distant galaxy, Beta Ray Bill, was the first to be able to wield Mjonir surprising Odin himself when he called on Thor to help the golden realm and a strange creature stood before him rather than his son. Eventually Beta Ray Bill was given his own hammer and scoured the cosmos to help those in need, but he was never utilized as greatly as when he emerged onto the pages of The Mighty Thor 337.
Of course the early eighties showed a skew of characters created by the great X-Men scribe Chris Claremont, after ending the seventies with the creation of Alpha Flight and Proteus, he ushered in great heroes and villains alike with Kitty Pryde, Emma Frost, Alison Blaire, the Hellfire Club, and three Hellfire Guards that would be torn up so badly by Wolverine they vowed vengeance some ninety issues later as Reavers. Could the Dark Phoenix, a character that only was around for a few issues, but had the X-Men fight off Gladiator and the royal guard with ramifications that would make the Marvel Universe shudder, if she survived what would the Marvel universe of today be like?
But Chris Claremont didn't stop there; he expanded the X-Men's works with Bob McLeod in a standalone story confined in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 with the New Mutants. The popularity of these five teenagers had them in their own series which lasted 100 issues, 7 annuals, a special edition, and 1 Summer special having their biggest worry being if they could finish their homework in time to watch Magnum P.I. Cannonball and Sunspot went on to be Avengers, Psyche changed to Mirage and is now a Defender, while the little lass is among the ranks of X-Factor, and finally the last of the original five is part of another X group or other.
A bit closer to the real world Frank Miller created a solid foundation for Matt Murdock and took two characters from Spider-Man's world using Wilson Fisk and Frank Castle as adversaries and reluctant compatriots, but it wasn't until issue #168 when he introduced possibly Daredevil's most lethal for in the guise of Elektra, an ex girlfriend. Her first death occurred not even two years later by possibly Daredevil's most lethal foe, Bullseye.
Jumping companies from Marvel to DC came two characters I purchased statues of. Dream and Death became personified. Not since Piers Anthony's "On a Pale Horse" did I find Death so likable, possibly more so than her older sibling Dream. It almost seemed like Neil Gaiman purposely thought up the two personalities of Death and Dream together having the latter be upbeat, happy, and hopeful while having the former be pessimistic, problematic, and full of pompous ambiguity...then switched them. His 75 issue maxi-series is quite arguably one of the best there is even until today.
Before independent companies became big, when competing against the big two was suicide. a small press called Mirage Studios competed against them with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The best part about this black and white hope to sell title was with an initial print run of about three thousand copies and a secondary print run doubling the first the comic book was actually being...gasp...read. Eclipse comics tried to follow the winning success with Radioactive BlackBelt Hamsters, now who would want to see the two of them fight it out?
What's your opinion? Who is your greatest eighties character? Who did I miss that should be worthy. I would love to hear your opinion.

Or Either way I am nuts
I cracked it open. I ripped asunder the thick plastic holding the well fast. I cut the thinner plastic holding the entombed ComicBook and slowly, gingerly, and painstakingly cut praying my steady hand would stay steady and wouldn't slip. Twice, two more times then I would car for the blade made its way towards the book. Halfway down, I stopped. Fortunately it was enough.
I slid the book into the precut bag allowing for a spot for the signature. Blue painters tape outlined the area I wanted to forever glance upon the ink if my choice. Money being an issue I had to choose one or the other. A previous journal listed my choice of cracking three of my New Mutants for Bob McLeod or either ASM 252 or 300 for Stan Lee. My original New Mutants is not a factor, I shall be having that book signed by both. It's the love of the book dictating spending the absurd amount of money on a book that will never financially achieve what I believe it is worth.
Either way the process has begun, the decision has been made and the die cast...ok enough cliches but my decision is too late to turn back. After five minutes and a cracked slab later my heart still pumped anxiously as I placed the book safely aside.

Or can the New Mutants wait?
I already decided to get three of my New Mutants graded when RonnyLama called to answer a question I had when he blurts out why don't you get that ASM 252 signed by Stan Lee. This off course would stop me from getting the New Mutants signed. I can't do both, only one or the other. Then there's that beautiful issue three hundred of ASM.
The live of my New Mutants collection is well known. So with any tough decision, more information is needed. I sent a text to Bagofleas and decided to pick his brain. He decided a phone call would be more prudent, so after a twelve minute something seconds phone call my decision was not more clear than it was before the call. Yes, made a kit if good points, very intelligent points, but I'm still nervousness about the outcome.
I am getting two books signed by the Icon. Can I afford one more. Should I press my DD#1? Should I try for the Annual #4? Should I win the lottery before I collect anymore? Well, time for work, let's see how this night goes, at the very least I will have time to think about it.

or the Battle of the "New" Mutants
I know what is going to happen. As sure as I am the sun will set and rise again. The lead I had has slowly been disappearing in the New Mutants 1983 set, the set that I feel is the only set that matters, well that and the copper age set which I can't even get close to the top three without some divinity from God stepping in. The New Mutants set was the set I wanted first and at first I knew I would be taking it away from some stranger from Florida. I did take it away from that person in Florida, but he stopped becoming a stranger and started to become my friend.
I retained, and still do the coveted number one spot but as time has passed the lead I have had have dwindled into striking distance, a distance which will turn into a chase after he gets his books back. And the whole time I might be going "No No NO", I am also saying "Yes Yes YES".
I have been watching his set grow, most recently with his amazingly spectacular beautiful specimen of a Marvel Graphic Novel I have ever seen. This coming Thursday Wizard World Philadelphia will begin. And I am thrilled that not only Stan Lee will be there, but Bob Mcleod shall also have his presence noted. I have three more books I can get signed by him. Issue #3, #10, and #75 are in my collection in a 9.8 but I worry, are they 9.8's. Will they retain their grade? Yes of course I was just as nervous as having CGC crack my ASM #129, but these are my babies.
Of course if they retain their grade I will breathe easier but at the moment they sit a shelf away next to the books I am getting signed by Stan Lee for Ronnylama and Lee K. The money is money I don't have. Money I would have to work seriously hard for. Money I am currently saying thanks to my Mom and Dad. Of course I can dip into my savings but this is my hobby, not my life. To get these books graded I calculated will be $116. To earn that amount I would have to have a really good day at work. Then there is the Annual #4 that if they think will get a 9.8 after a pressing; then yes I am going for it.
I might lose the coveted number one spot to none other than Bagofleas, but even though I am rooting for every New Mutants book he has sent in to come back will be the same 9.8 grade he sent in I know he is doing the same. I do realize I have graded more harshly on my books than CGC has, but I have been disappointed in the past too.
As I mention, maybe not by this next awards, but I will lose this spot, but I swear I will do so kicking and screaming, but in the end not a better man deserves it.

    or more good news please
The journals have come alive. I hit my milestown of 450 journals two days ago and since then there have been slightly more than a dozen added, quite a few have been by Bagofleas. The one directly after mine was by Lee K, an issue I wanted to bring up as well. The quality of the quality control might be more stringent but what about the shipping. I know my last two packages have been haphazardly thrown in the box with a miniscule amount of popcorn a little bit of bubblewrap and I might have a board or two thrown in between slabs for protection, yes might. Check out what Lee K has to say in his journal...

Now, I do love collecting comic books. It relaxes me. Competing with bagofleas has been fun and I know he is within striking distance of taking over the coveted number one spot. In fact he will be taking it over this year. And as much as I am trying to fight him off, I am also cheering for him. But that is only one of the reasons why, the other are the journals. More so than the boards. The journals have a story rather than just a voice from the dark. Thank you all to have written and supported them in the past few days. I dare say...let's write some more.

Now only if I had as many graded comic books.
With all kinds of lists that could be made, it's the covers list I always enjoyed. Wizard would have them in their magazines as well as CBG. So for my next list I am going to let you know what my favorite covers from the eighties are.
I would also like to know if you feel that CGC is slipping. We all know grading is taking longer but I have noticed that with their new increased quality control they lost the quality over the control. This goes from mislabeling a book, not listing an important detail, or even and most importantly not packing tho books the way they used to pack them.
Prices go up. I understand this. But maybe CGC could make an all inclusive membership tear, one that takes away the per invoice charge, gives the notes for free, and maybe gives a frequent slabbers card. The registry is fun but I am going to have to slow down what I get graded, maybe even to the point I only get signatures graded.
Then there is the best set contest. May I please suggest another category, maybe the best limited series. This could include any and all from Contest of Champions to the soon to be Released Infinity. This would be for those small, possibly overlooked well loved books.
Well, if all goes right, I'll be in New York today and if I can swing it I might stop by a comic book shop or two. Of course I can't buy anything because I will be adding a couple Stan Lee Signatures to my collection.
    Thanks for Reading

This was so much fun why do I have to stop at ten?
I looked over my books and wrote a list of ten. A month later I did it again. Then I looked over my original top five when Surfer 99 originally posted the question. Then I made my list again. Finally I listed the ten that you have spent the last couple of weeks reading about.

With such books that include keys and memories what book could possibly push a book off from its spot. What do I possibly have that could even compete? Will these books still be here a year from now? Could my copy of X-Men#109 make the list one day? Will my Incredible Hulk make it if it can press from a 9.4 to a 9.8? Might my Crazy #3 in a 1.0 push its way in rather rudely if not violently?
    So my runner up is...
My X-Men 109 9.8 SS is the lone copy out of the 830 graded, 48 of which reached the pinnacle 9.8 grade and this was the only one to have Chris Claremont's scrawl on a book I only purchased to get a multi book discount.

Or This has been a public service announcement
How is it the USPS is hurting for money, oh yea, they suck.
Cgc has only recently started to ship through other means than USPS. Of course if you have an account with FedEx that was a choice as well. With all the changes CGC has been making, I think the best one is adding UPS has a shipping choice.
I track my packages from the moment they ship to the moment they arrive. On this particular package it was stated a notice was left, twice. One time they stated the notice was left in the morning hours, 10:49am to be precise. The second time they have posted a notice being left was 9:12pm. And although my parents are getting older, senility has not yet kicked in.
I have been using my parents address as a drop of point because they live in a secured building and someone is always there. The other good thing about using my parents address is my father is retired and can be around to sign for the package. Especially when I give him advance notice that I am expecting something. At no time did anyone call upstairs to let him know a package needed to be signed for, not to mention the notice left by the USPS was never left.
This occurred on the twentieth. It is the next day and I am diligently trying to find where this package is. I did the only thing I knew to do and called the post office directly. They told me the same thing I can read in the computer, a notice was left. I proceeded to tell then that no notice was left and all I had to do was go to the post office and pick it up. My father being my father started to walk over to the post office and I decided to come into the city.
Unfortunately the horror story has continued, the package is missing. After being told that the package was in the local post office my parents were told the opposite, it's not there,it's on the truck. At this point I was walking to meet them but they had me go to their apartment instead. I checked with security and the office and both had just started their shift. The sign "mail was delivered" was posted but it wasn't there, nor once again was any notice.
I am writing this while waiting for them to return. My frustration is rising and I am swearing off the USPS. I will look into opening an account with FedEx and once my stamps are used up will attempt to pay everything online rather than snail mail.
This has not been the first time this has happened. If I am not mistaken this is the eighth time that this has occurred. Four have never been found. One was signed for by the postal carrier and recovered after going to the supervisor as soon as I saw it was signed for and it wasn't me. The next day I was able to retrieve it and the supervisor said they would follow up on it. The next week as I followed up I was told the supervisor that took care of me never existed.
I have no trust with them anymore. Of course I hope I am over reacting and somehow the package is delivered. I also hope my activity pushed them to find and deliver the package. I'll let you know. As for what is missing, a copy of Sandman #13 SS 9.8, a book I originally purchased and read as a teen and Marvel Team Up 100 double cover 9.6 SS.

    Thank you for reading.
Ps. after getting my package from UPS I left to go home. An hour and a half later the package was delivered a little after 9pm. So I wonder why the package was delivered six hours after the mail was already dropped off. I feel like Mr. Owl eating a tootsie roll pop...the world may never know.

or The Last To Be Named
We all have that ONE book that made us pick up the next one. I can attribute that book to New Mutants #15, I think if you are reading this, then you know that already, but what made me pick up that book? Was it the Star Wars treasury edition, was it Richie Rich Millions #79, Could it have been DC Comics #502, or Batman #313, possibly Action Comics 507, which the cover was so good I read over and over again without even opening the comic books pages. There are many different comic books I have owned before I started collecting. As much as DC even had a part of my beginning days, so did Marvel with Fear #8, Supernatural Thrillers #2, Tales of Suspense #97, and the book taking up the number three slot...
    Sub-Mariner #38.
The cover was the typical iconic hero flies away, this time it is under water. Sub-Mariner poses, dropping trident and Crown and vows to be the Prince of Atlantis no more on this cover by Marie and John Severin. This captured my young eyes and imagination to what I thought would be the coolest thing ever, breath underwater. As much as I tried in the bathtub, I was only able to hold my breath, who knew of gills at this young age. After reading the inside along with other comic books like Crazy #3 and multiple Richie Rich books somewhere, somehow, no family members noticed. My sister, who I loved to read to me, would do so with the likes of Dr. Seuss, How babies were made, and The Chosen Child. Comic books became a secret read.
The Star Wars treasury edition stayed in my Grandfather's car and remained there until the car was sold. The book very well might still reside in my mother's house sitting in what was known as the toy closet. The Sub-Mariner 38 travelled with me and is currently missing while my New Mutants #15 is currently encapsulated as a 4.5 SS. And to which I might add will be having Stan Lee sign it along with Bob McLeod; I wonder is this money wasted.
The Sub-Mariner I have in a 9.8 is the second one I have. I was out bid on the first one I tried to obtain, a double cover pedigree. I was not going to let this one escape and I prevailed. I keep going up in my most expensive comic and purchasing these books help me realize that buying a pair of pants for $55 isn't that bad.
I hope you enjoyed my top ten. I have another list ready and that shall be revealed another time. I am preparing myself for Wizard World. My press credentials were approved and I hope to do the event justice. Mind you I will be writing this from the viewpoint that is a pop culture event not a comic con, more on that later. Please follow the link and any support you could give would be highly appreciated.

My number four spot was a tie. The two books that fill this spot are my New Mutants #17 and my Daredevil #380, both are a 9.8. The New Mutants was purchased that way as a gift. It was also the first time I told my friend who purchased it for me what I wanted. She tells me I am hard to shop for but I think I am rather easy and this was a perfect choice. It was also one of the last books I needed that was available, and I might be sending it in for a signature. How cool would that be?
The other is My Daredevil #380, also a gift, however this time she bought it for me raw. Why this one, I will never know, maybe because when she entered the comic book shop the proprietor saw an opportunity to get rid of a book. I was happy for it and surprised because she purchased this without me ever saying anything about it, and also a vow that she would never buy me a comic book. Truth be told, I believe in miracles and this was the proof they happen. I sent it in not caring about the grade, and was pleasantly shocked it was returned a 9.8. I know my collection might be a little bit grander if I actually spent my money on more silver age books but these two are that important to me.
So indeed my number four spot is filled with two books once again that mean something to me because of who gave them to me. As far as Surfer 99 stating on an earlier journal of Bagofleas stating that on a tie the picture dictates which book does indeed have the intended slot...have at thee surfer, have at thee.
    Thanks for Reading
