In one case, that's easy. Heritage is in Texas. Shill bidding is legal in Texas. Halperin and Ivy confirmed this decades ago 👍 Ironically I never hear of MCS taking advantage of this loophole 🤔

Sure.  I am not aware of evidence of Comiclink doing this, but maybe that is out there as well.  My comment was to a comment that stated shilling was the case with any online auction, which I disagree with, unless there is evidence of such dastardly acts.

however to the OP original point, shilling does in fact take place in any online auction setting. Good luck preventing it It's just the nature of the beast

Maybe.  Prove it, and then you might be on this something.

In the meantime, given the title of this thread, the OP’s gripes, and the shockingly very reasonable and realistic responses to this thread, the only thing I have come up with is, this is just a really poorly-titled thread to begin with.

Remember a lot of folks using comic link are also consigners so the spending of "free/found money" effect is always possible.

IMHO it's very smart to cull and consign extras of Copper key-like books and use the funds to purchase Silver.  Even I did that recently,  first time I've sold any books in over a decade in my case the credit was utilized to fund buys of high grade Silver.  yeah getting less for the copper's than if it had been 1-2 years back but the Silvers are selling for less as well so it mostly but not entirely balances out.

    Welcome to ten years ago.

My perspective on it is simply that the whole "charity" angle is very shady and an obvious ploy to get past eBay fees.

If you can get past that, Berkbridge / Jalali / Marino is just another comic book dealer.  Like many dealers on eBay, their prices are usually too high.  But on those occasions in the past where I found something I wanted and worked out a deal, there were no surprises and everything went smoothly.  They've been trustworthy by the narrow definition of delivering the book(s) you're buying quickly and safely.

The one wrinkle that makes them different from a typical eBay seller is that you never actually deal (or appear to be dealing) with Jalali/Marino himself, you are always dealing with "Nicole" or "Sophie."  Whether those are real people or not, who knows.

So, yeah, I’m suggesting that it’s not worth the effort, despite your vouching for Berkbridge because they ship in a safe manner.

The fact that you have to ask yourself “I know I’m not dealing with the guy that I know changed his name for reasons unknown to me, but am I dealing with Nicole or Sophie and are they real or not,” pretty much is Reason 1 as to why it’s probably not a good idea to have anything to do with them.

    But you do you.

Some of us even predicted this drop.  The conversation below was about X-Men #1 in 2.0.  People called me crazy for thinking the price would drop.  It peaked over $10k, and this month the low was $6200.  I'm thinking we haven't seen the bottom yet.  (Same applies to all grades of this book.)

😆 Now do all the books you overpaid for during this period of time.

  6. My situation is somewhat like the thread floating around on General right now, but I know I am looking for a SA book, and that thread is going to get yanked at some point.  I am a BA and CA guy, and this purchase would be a 5 yr investment, or if that would not be necessary to cash it out then, then it becomes a 10 yr investment.  This is a serious inquiry, my knowledge cuts out around the late 60s with Nick Fury Agent of SHEILD and a few horror books, and I don't know enough to drop real money (at least real money to me) on something like this.  This is not a "buy what you love," this is a buy what I can turn around in 5 years or in 10 years.

A very serious thank you in advance for anyone that is willing to give me their input.

Like @Semicentennial mentioned - he'd been here for a long time. Had his post been written by a member who just joined, it would have been an easy pass. Someone who lurks around here for ten years - you'd think they get the general vibe of expectation in sales threads, and would be worth the risk of making a purchase.

Wasn’t this the seller that lamented everyone for not be willing to pay his asking price because “everyone wants everything for free” or something like that? You can be on here forever and that’s not a recipe for things that are going to end well.

Buy the book, not the grade, Dr. Balls.
