  1. All your points well taken and as a collector I think the things you talk about here are very important to know. That said I truly believe that buying what you love should trump any other consideration for obtaining art. In this instance I believe the OP made a sound financial purchase in spite of the “turn offs” mentioned on the replies. * Don’t like Stiltman • No DD on page • Colan not known for Spiderman valid points.... In this case ( I am biased always loved this issue of DD) I believe the buyer made an outstanding purchase. He really loved the page and the content. He endured the trauma of bidding and winning a contested prize. It’s large size art that just looks awesome in its presentation. As always Gene your insight are always welcome here. Your gallery on CAF speaks for itself. When Gene speaks, people listen!!! My guess nostalgia + desire for the look and feel of the page won this guy over. He had the will and the $ to get it done. Great thread. 🍇 🦍
  2. Because if you don’t buy it for $8,000 when you could’ve had it for $5,000, it just might be $10,000 next month. Welcome to the world of Los Bros.
  3. I became suspicious when the signed SAMO piece by Jan-Michael Bisquick appeared. But it had a stamp of authenticity so....
  4. Two of the best films ever! The Quiet Man is a must watch at least once a year. This is a fun discussion.
  5. Haha Believe me for your sake I didn’t even want to bring up the sore point! The shenanigans in the art world of any kind are trying, dubious, largely anti social in nature. x 2 🍇 🦍
  6. I’m on your side friend. They are rubbish to the core.
  7. Best of luck on your journey. I think it’s a noble quest and look forward to tracking your progress. The victories yes! Should you choose, I think sharing the close calls, near misses and heartbreaks along the way could make this a legendary thread! Enjoy the journey! Cheers from 🍇 🦍
  8. Bruce Jones Brent Anderson April Campbell Summerset Holmes 1983-1984 1-4 Pacific Comics 5-6 Eclipse This goes back aways forgive me but I really enjoyed these. Still have the comics bought from Page After Page Las Vegas, Nevada back in 1984. Mysterious, cinematic in presentation. Worth a look.
  9. I love the Big John Buscema SS 14 Page 3. I saw that up close at Mitch’s booth SDCC 2018. 🍇 🦍
  10. Your DD 27 is large art and no wasted space on one of Gene’s best issues. Maybe the splashe/pinups might eventually be worth more but for me I love the interior page. I am biased as this is one of my favorite issues of DD by Colan. I tried to get a page from a collector buddy for years. Never saw one sell so had no idea what it would take. I hoped to win this DD27 page for about $8-$9 K. It doubled that. I think your money was well spent. I just mentally wasn’t prepared for how much it went for. You scored an amazing page and only a real Daredevil would have the risk aversion to bid like a madman and win that great page. Cheers, 🍇 🦍
  11. Like me you probably appreciate all kinds of artistic expressions. I credit my dads influence but also glad I’ve exposed myself to many genres. We went to San Francisco years ago for an Leonardo DaVinci exhibit. Talk about human anatomy!!
  12. Still look for these remaining pages for you. Please CGC community if you come across any pages PM Jordysnordy. We all know what it’s like to have a goal in this great hobby: Helping others feels great too!!! BUMP
  13. That is amazing. I have no artistic talent but my dad was a very good painter and sculptor. Sadly all his paintings were lost and or stolen when he died in 2004. sixteen years later I was searching the backpack he had with him when he passed away. I found a sketch he made the day he died. I didn’t know it was there until now. He was very ill at the time but it was a gift to find it. its a self portrait and though just a rough sketch from a dying man it resembles the excellent paintings he made when he was healthy and young. This was a cool idea for a thread Terry.
  14. Tom Mandrake does the inking. It’s a later piece 1993. I wouldn’t auction this piece as I think you’ll actually get less with commission fee deducted. My educated guess is this is maybe $750-$900 Sell it privately. Or offer it CGC but in the Comic Marketplace section for art. Has the potential buyer made you an offer? You can PM me and I’ll objectively help you try to negotiate a fair deal! Good luck Mike aka 🍇 🦍
  15. An iconic image. A jaw dropping pose. Dave Stevens one of the coolest guys and his art will always stand out as top shelf.
  16. Yes kindness goes a long way. In my friends situation the seller was “abrupt” in turning down a $15 cut. This angered my friend. So that annoyed me too. I told my friend “don’t buy it then.” My goal is to always walk away peacefully if I can’t get a deal done. I personally spent six months last year getting to know a collector who has a piece I’ve been trying to get for 17 years. Finally I gently presented my interest and the collector shot me down. He was abrupt, forceful even. No! Not going to sell. We had been exchanging compliments over our two collections to that point. I was taken back by the “tone” of his response. But I’ve learned not to burn bridges. I thanked him and complimented a different piece of art he had. Maybe one day he will change his mind. If not I respect that. No matter how much we might want something we’re not entitled to it. So if it’s available pay the sellers price if it will make you happy. You May be sorry if you let something pass you really wanted. You make a key point about paying up and laying the groundwork for a future deal. There’s times where I’ve asked a seller/dealer “let me get you (buy at an agreeable discount) this time and I’ll pay full on the next one.” Then I keep my word and pay full price on the next page no barter no questions asked. Builds strong buyer seller relationships.
  17. Vodou I know where you’re going with this. You’re not wrong. I recommend not biting your nose to spite your face also. A dealer back in 1998 wanted $140 for a page. My friend offered him $125 and the dealer wouldn’t budge. Overnight my friend regretted not buying and next day offered full price. Already sold to another. Six years later I found the page again and negotiated a deal for my friend. It cost $550 now. A few bucks more for something you really want is always worth it.
  18. I don’t disagree I think the price is on target. I just guessed that a collector would round up to $20 K to say they have an ASM cover. I would never argue with the Cab....ahh never mind —some things are best left unsaid.
