  1. Had no idea this was up for auction over a CL. Completely missed it. Congrats to whomever won it.
  2. Just scanned over some of the winning bids. Am very impressed with how well Adams Bats have been doing the last few auctions. Very strong showing across the board tonight.
  3. One of my favorite books in the Adams run. Very underrated too in my opinion. Congrats.
  4. Didn't Emergency come out right around the time Adam 12 was running? I recall seeing an episode of Emergency where they had to leave for a call while trying to catch Adam 12 on TV. One of the inside jokes was the crew trying to figure what happened on the show that they were missing. In my mind, this was one of the closest instances where we got a cross over back in the day. If I remember right, Chips came right after that along with Starsky and Hutch. Man, watched those '70s shows like crazy back in the day. Then again, with only 3 network channels, 2 local channels, and PBS, we didn't have a lot options back then.
  5. Ya know. Those Marvel "reprint" comics from the BA might not have a lot of collector value, but I ate them up as a kid. Marvel's Greatest Comics, Marvel Tales, Marvel Triple Action, etc.. Couldn't get enough of those great stories and updated covers.
  6. Been mentioned before, but World's Finest has been a long neglected title. On first pass, you'd think this would be impossible given how many Superman and Batman fans/collectors are out there. I suspect that's because the fan base are polar opposites just like the characters. I love Bats, but can't get into Supes. I suspect Supes fans feel the same way about Bats. Putting them together in the same book would mostly drive both fan bases away instead of bring them together. I'm guilty of this myself as I only have a few WF books and most are just to I could complete my Adams Bats collection. Compared to Bats and Supes books of any ERA, WF books are dirt cheap in comparison.
  7. Yes. I think I'm one of eight people in the world that still cares.
  8. Anything in the Sword & Sorcery genre, especially Conan, including DC's Warlord.
  9. I tell him they're worth millions. Lookup any LCS in the phone book. They'll willingly pay through the nose for it. Go in with a tough attitude and don't fall for any of their lying, low-ball offers.
  10. I guess it might have been around 1977 or 1978. My access to purchase comics up to that point was pretty much limited to newsstands, spinner racks in convenience stores, and the late, great Robert Bell in Hauppauge, NY. One day a friend of mind showed me this great back issue of this one title (Don't remember exactly what that book was) and told me he got it from a "comic book store". I was really amazed at the concept of a store entirely devoted to comics and just had to see this for myself. Anyway, a few weeks later, we make the trip across the city via public transportation and I was introduced to Superhero Universe in Cambridge, MA. My eyes just about popped out when I walked in and saw all the wall books and isles of comic bins. Must have spent hours in there every available weekend I could get away. They eventually openned up a couple of other stores in the next few years, including one in downtown Boston. Pretty much hooked after that and visited as many other shops as possible within my travel range. My favorite was always the Million Year Picnic (also in Cambridge, MA). Back to Superhero Universe, the owner of the store was a real sleazeball, but I didn't realize that until later. Back in '83 when I officially left comics, I sold my collection to him and the scumbag made every attempt to delay payment to me, despite me giving him a really great deal. I made so many damn visits to the Boston store to ask for my money, I wounded up getting hired to work the store. Always thought it was ironic that I'd wind up working in a comic shop as soon as I gave up comics. Bob Layton used to stop by the store every now and then as he was living in Boston at the time. I remember one of my female co-workers really wanting to get into his pants every time he stepped into the store. I guess Bob was a real rock star in those days. Anyway, I stayed there for almost 2 years before hanging it up and left for the Marines. SU chain went belly up a just a few years later, which didn't surprise me. The Million Year Picnic is still operating to this day.
  11. Smith was a Kirby clone when he started out and I think a lot folks can't get into that. What's amazing about the Smith run was seeing the evolution take place within the first two years when he developed his own style. It went from "meh" to "wow". While issue #1 may fail to impress, issue #24 and especially Red Nails will floor you.
  12. Next to #24, I think #6 is my favorite story. Reprinted in Giant-Size Conan #3. I think it either won or was nominated for best story for that year. Either way. Great story and I don't believe it was based on any of REH's tales.
  13. I like the bad girls :D One day I will have a high grade Vampire Tales #2 as well.
  14. Stan recommended that Conan stop fighting monsters on the cover all the time and show him fighting other men instead, bringing him down to earth more and looking less one dimensional. Starting with issue #8, this sort of happened with the skeletal guards.
  15. Funny you mention. I won the book right at my MAX. Like I said, I didn't expect to win. I was contacted by CL the next day before I could pay and was offered $400 to release the book to someone else who really wanted it, but forgot about the auction. Thats when I knew I really got a heck of a deal.
  16. My latest CL win just came in. Looks like they re-slabbed it as well. Satana joins her sisters!
  17. Well, my CL wins came in. The JO #134 is much nicer in hand. Looking at it closely, I think the soft, bottom right corner is the only thing keeping this book from getting either a 9.4 or 9.6 at the outside. The rest of book is just beautiful. Picked up the Omnibus as well in it's honor (haven't decided yet whether I want to pursue the run). Another nice surprise is that the MP #7 seems to be in a newer case than the one CL had a scan of. On the CL scan, there's an obvious scratch on the lower right of the slab that's not present with the one I just got. Appears to be the same book and the serial # is the same.
  18. I think about this one from time to time. When I first saw this, it actually fooled me. At a glance, I didn't notice this was Calvin and Hobbes strip until towards the end. Then it hit me and I was rolling.
