I also keep my eyes out for these issues. I once had one of the Mickey issues on the list. I bought it for $.30, and sold it for $35. Not a bad margin me thinks. I kind of wish I would have kept it though.

Take note that there are still 20 different issues with 5 or Less copies Graded by CGC. The Big-4 (Donald #222, Lulu #260, Scrooge #179, WDC&S #480) have been well known TOUGH issues for 30 Years & were the first to bring record prices on eBay, now listing relatively high in Guide, thus a disproportionate number of copies have been CGC graded, they are still scarce & in huge demand in spite of what the skewed CGC quantities would indicate.

The first 37 is in alpha, so it's more a bundling of "rarer" Whitman's and should not be taken to follow any numerical order in the way you presented it, or the way it is posted on Doug's site.

If 5 or so dropped out from the first iteration which had 42, it's likely because Doug either started noting them regularly appearing on eBay or people who collected them were giving him feedback which he used to pare it down. A few of those I agree with (i.e. Uncle Scrooge 180 and Woody Woodpecker 190 are two which I've seen quite regularly and would be more suited in the list of 67)

The second list is an expanded one and likely culminated from the association these books had with the "rarer" 37 (i.e. many comics from the expanded list of 67 were included in the same sealed packs from books appearing in the rarer 37).

Honestly, I think it's really kind of pointless because no one can come to agreement on which is rarer based on their experiences hunting certain issues down.

From my own research and collecting experience, I have tried to create a list of my own. The census is a decent windsock to gauge rarity, but it is not the be all end all.

Here is something you could go by for the top 10 (last number after the hyphen are the census totals):

Woody Woodpecker #191 - 8

Black Hole #4 - 11

Popeye #159 - 5

Chip N Dale #69 - 5

Popeye #158 - 8

Beep Beep Roadrunner #92

Daffy Duck #130 - 8

Tom and Jerry #331 - 6

Looney Tunes #35 - 11

Bugs Bunny #221 - 17

Would have to agree with Comicwiz's list with my experience over the years; the only change I would make would be Tom and Jerry 331. In my experience; Tom and Jerry 332 was harder to find. The hardest ones to find are the 75 cent Canadian variants. For me it was Pooh #32 (not listed on Doug Sulipa's site and Peter Pan #1 (please excuse the quality of the scans)

Some of the art from the unpublished last issues came up for sale in some heritage auctions a few years ago. The artwork to some of the rate issues also came up. Those truly are one of a kind. I own a couple of pages from unpublished Whitman Black Hole comics .
