Living in Canada, any book crossing from the USA hurts due to the customs fees. We Canadians not only have to pay a 31-37 percent exchange rate but also get hit with another 15 percent customs fee!

As a fellow Canadian, my suggestion is that on a book that is "investment worthy" like you are seeking, better to do everything above board. Also, anything you are selling/trading as you refered to, would also be in US dollars, keep the funds in US and put towards your purchase.

The exchange rate (20-25) would only be on the amount above and beyond what you bring in for your books. Paying full customs is required if you are going to have full insurance on the book. Really high value stuff, you dont want to be messing around with fraud in case something goes wrong during shipping.
