What are these board(s) for?

215 posts in this topic

pretty sure every sizable forum on the internet is like that.

Hit the nail on the head

I respectfully disagree.

Just because others are that way does not mean we have to be. I mean this as a general concept: What is that saying ... something like "Just because everyone else is jumping off the cliff does not mean you have to" (not sure if that is the correct wording).

Rather than living by the base common denominator, one can strive for something better.

And another thing: I could not care less what other internet forums do or do not do. There is only one reason I am here: because I am interested in comics, in knowing about them, learning about them, and sharing about them. There is a reason I am not a part of any other internet forum. And could not care less about any of them.

Don't mistake my remark as acceptance. Could we be better than that? Perhaps, however it is what it is.

I'm going to put this bluntly. If you have a problem with that way it is here, then perhaps this isn't the place for you.

Personally, I like it here. I like (most of) the people. I like the personalities. I like the interaction.

And I could not care less about anyone who disagrees with that.

Don't mistake my remark above as denunciation. I do accept things as they are. That would never stop me from thinking of improvements.

Since you have, let me too put this bluntly. If you read my prior posts in this very thread, you would see that I do like it here.

Plagiarism.

These boards have a different character to any that I've read before. There is a camaraderie and a sense of history in the regulars, the irregulars and dead horses that have been beaten and those which have not been beaten enough. On first reading these boards, I spent a few weeks rummaging through the old threads, following links to more old threads and it helped give me a sense of the flow of life in this little corner of the internet over the past 11 years.

I think what keeps this place different is that the subject matter we're here discussing doesn't change that much. Old comics are still old comics. Sometimes they cost a lot, sometimes they cost a little. The same questions come up again and again, but that's what makes these boards timeless in that the same questions and concerns are as pertinent to the bulk of comics collectors now as they were ten years ago.

And sometimes opinions change. It's good to run a status check on certain topics once in a while. :)

You know, it's always possible that some of us newbies have put more comic boxes together than some of the long term guys..... new to this board certainly does not mean new to collecting.
Irrelevant.

Yes, to you maybe. But it shouldn't be, and therein lies the problem. I am not too old to learn something from anyone, but most of the senior members here sure think they are.

It's a problem for any chat board. The old timers have talked to death most of the issues the board was established to discuss. As a result, they end up talking among themselves about a lot of OT stuff and most threads quickly drift OT. People new to the board then get ignored and drift away. The result can be a death spiral as participation drops and eventually the board becomes moribund. This board has avoided that fate ... at least for now.

I don't have much sympathy for the many "Learn how to use the search function" responses. So what if a topic has been discussed before? Anyone who is bored with the issue can skip it. New members are joining every day -- at least, I hope they are! -- and may want to actively discuss the issue, even if old timers aren't interested. Actively discussing an issue has more value than reading what people had to say last year or four years ago or whatever.

In addition, when someone revives a thread from a few years ago, they almost always get slammed for doing so. New members are supposed to just read old threads and never post? Good luck with keeping the board going with that approach.

My "Still 10 cents"

Amen!

The subject of this post is a bit of a rhetoric question. I 've always felt these board(s) were for the exchange of ideas about comic book collecting, sharing opinions about various publishers, creators, books, etc. and including the technical aspects of comic book preservation and more.

But what I don't get is, and I've seen this more than once, new person posts a question and the first response by a boardie is, e.g., "If you would have searched the boards you would found this questions have been discussed so many times! and the response is just awash with attitude or my other favorite is someone posts a technical question and the very first response is some asinine bulls**t. Clearly if the boardie is someone you know that is a different story but if they aren't, why respond like that right out of the box if you don't know them well? Is there a segment of the boardie population with really weak social skills, more so than in the general population?

:gossip: Comics General, it's not the place you're looking for.

Try the other forums / sub-forums, really.
