New Mutants 98 CGC 10.0

1,026 posts in this topic

I'm going to bring up something incredibly unpopular: Overstreet's Grading Guide, Third Edition.

By including CGC graded books in this guide, does it not imply that these are the guidelines that CGC uses on average? There will always be mistakes and unique cases that fall outside the book; however, since CGC allowed the use of its graded books as examples of Overstreet grades, this book, de facto, contains the definitive, published, grading guidelines for CGC.

:fear:

Nope.

How odd; when I follow your link, just about every result states that CGC adopted Overstreet's grading standards.

hm I don't think that link means what you think it does.

My point stands, as of today, no one here knows what CGCs current standards are.

Hundreds of people know plenty of their standards via reverse engineering them. If you're grandstanding for some reason because you're pissed that CGC has never documented their standards and made them publicly available, we feel your pain, but hey, name me another certification company in another hobby who has done that. I don't believe you'll be able to, so if you are indeed expressing butthurt about CGC keeping their special sauce recipe secret, I'm afraid none of us here can help ease the pain. :sorry:

I know nothing of coins, but would this count?

"THE GUIDE THAT EXPLAINS, ILUSTRATES, AND SETS THE STANDARD FOR GRADING UNITED STATES COINS

The world's largest and most prestigious coin grading organization has created an amazing, one-of-a-kind guide that reveals its grading and authentication secrets. From the introduction:

"By furnishing a simple yet detailed guide to grading coins, PCGS has made it easy to understand the number that appears on a grading holder. Reading this book will make you an expert."

– Jay W. Johnson, Former Director, United States Mint

This book illustrates and explains with precise descriptions and digital images how you can determine the exact condition of a coin. Here is a coin grading volume so complete that—like its author, PCGS—it indeed sets the standard for grading coins."

It looks like it might! :applause:

Does anyone know where PCGS falls in the hierarchy of coin grading companies? Best around, second-bet, barely scraping by, or what? Them releasing what appears to be their grading guidelines is a fascinating move that I wish I had known about when Borock was still with CGC. I'd love to know Litch or Haspel's opinion about it as well. hm

....they are highly respected. Their main competitor is CGC's sister company, NGC. The only other company with any mass accetance i9s ANACS which was actually the very first of the slabbing companies....GOD BLESS...

So -- I remember all the discussion about the NM 98 9.9 thread about what was good value etc.

I just received word that I received a NM 98 CGC 10.0 white in my latest submission.

Thoughts?

Obviously, I'm very excited.

Very nice, Brian. :applause: Next time I see you, you're buying dinner.

Read some of those discussion threads, you'll see what I mean.

Here's a decent recap:

$15K-$22K

Wow, dare to dream. If I slabbed my copy of NM98 it would come back as 9.2 at best. Not much of a market for that.

I think Brian paid $100 for the book. This is going to be one impressive payday for sure.
