I have seen multiple copies of each variation in person and have seen various pedigrees.

Variants 1 & 2 have a rose coral background on slightly glossed paper stock.  The rose coral is a delicate color that is very affected by the yellowing of paper as it ages.

Variant 3 is has a tomato red background on glossy stock.  It is impossible to confuse with the first two variations.

I've put scans of the different variants below that I scraped off the interwebs.

Excellent! If I someday offer this for sale I'm going to use that terminology. "Rose Coral Variant. The most tasteful and elegant of the bloody spider cover variants."

I was just taking a close look at Catman 31 (the Promise copy). I had always thought that the cover looked a little sloppy.  Thought maybe it was a problem with the printer perhaps. See how the inking on the word "comics" is? The colors on the faces on some of wolves are not in the right places it seems. Think this was done on purpose? I doubt it. Too bad it came out like that.

Also it's neat how the backdrop is white snow on a black background but you also see the same pattern on Catman's body and his shadow., also on Kitten's body. Unique cover even for him.Bottom pic is a recreation from the Black Light book.

 

Here's my Catman #31 from way back. Agreed, the snow effect is fantastic. I've been a Cole fan AND a Catman fan for a long time, so this book was a natural for me. It's still not the easiest to find today, but I'm honestly surprised prices aren't a bit higher.

Wow your #31 looks great. All the layers of ink line up near perfectly if not spot on . That's real nice.

Got this in the mail yesterday from Lone Star Comics (mycomicshop). They really have their act together and are very pleasant to deal with. Good people. I find most Texas folks are.

Not quite Tomato Red but a strong Rose Coral I think.
