Comics, Pulps, and Paperbacks: Why such a discrepancy in values? 25 25

Definitely need an upgrade on this first one, preferably one without a price sticker on it , but it's one of my favorite covers.

The owner at my LCS used lighter fluid to take the sticker off one of the books I bought from her, but that makes me a bit nervous.

Last one for this morning is a hardcover (I hope that is alright). I actually collect quite a bit a sci-fi by female authors and I feel this book definitely fits the theme of this thread based on its subject matter. It's a sci-fi book about a hardboiled detective called Sibyl Sue Blue. Unfortunately, Rosel George Brown passed away at a fairly young age. She wrote several short stories and collaborated on the novel Earthblood with Keith Laumer. 

The first line on the dust jacket is:

"Sibyl Sue Blue hits first and thinks later, preferably over a Gin and 'gin and a good cigar."

I’ve been pretty lucky finding high grade copies at embarrassingly low prices. Most of the books I own were $5 or less. I paid $15 for the Worlds of Weird book a couple years ago and that was the first time I spent more than $10 on a paperback.

It takes work to make that luck though, a lot of digging around usually so it's nice to get the payoff.

Much easier to do with 60's - 80's books than 40's & 50's but it still happens occasionally, unlike comics where every lay person knows (or thinks) every book is a gold mine.

For the stuff I collect, I am mostly resigned to paying market prices these days but I am always scouring for bargains.

Hard covers or HB's are fine. Perhaps Pat could share a few of his gems again. I'm positive no one would mind.  One of my top HB's is L. Sprague De Camp's "Lest Darkness Fall", in it's second edition (1949 by Prime Press"). The 1941 HB by Henry Holt and Company is the first edition.

I was happy to add these two when Jerry Weist's library was auctioned off.  He was a wonderful man that I first met as a kid visiting Million Year Picnic (that place was a wonderland to a kid that didn't get to go to comic book stores very often).  Later, I purchased many books from him when he was selling off consignments for other people and he was an absolute joy to talk to on the phone and via email.  Having these two books sort of keeps his memory for me.

Great cover, and "The Tortured Planet" is a much better title than "That Hideous Strength." I have been unable to determine if Lewis himself came up with the new title.

Good things come to those who wait have patience. This is one of the very few (I think I'm down to single digits for sure) Cornell Woolrich/William Irish vintage paperbacks I didn't have, until this nice copy came along. There is a bit of mystery/confusion on the dating of some editions but it appears this is from 1944, the same year as the hardcover and is most likely the first paperback edition. It precedes the more common small format Avon #106 which came out in 1946. This one is pretty tough to find in any condition.

I've been considering the title since you said this.  I somewhat agree in isolation, but having the first and third books end in Planet when the second one doesn't is slightly offputting to me.

Yup, classic Falcon Book, the whole series is hot. But I also love the wackiness going on in the Gibson cover, and the fact it's one of those rare Atlas digests with the globe on the cover
