Best of 2015: The Votes are in

258 posts in this topic

I knew going into this 2015, there was no way I was topping the year before. 2014 was a grailstorm

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerydetailsearch.asp?yr=2014&gcat=3878

That said, I'm still happy with the pieces I've added this past year. Some significant pieces, some fun pieces, and something I coveted out of any CAFer's gallery.

This year's submissions:

Stephen Fabian - Ursula Andress from the movie, She. I don't know where all this was published, other than being in an early art book of SF's. I had admired this when it was in a high-profile gallery on CAF, and when it popped up on Burkey's site at a reasonable price, I didn't even have to think about it.

Walt Kelly - Pogo Sunday from November 1953. This made me laugh out loud. A gorgeous early Pogo with everybody in it and Grundoon! I was lucky to be online the moment Rob Stolzer offered it for sale, and messaged him right away -- I know a line formed behind me.

Jim Starlin - Batman Family 17 Splash page. I keep getting Starlin DC pages for some reason. Hard to pass up on this one. Scary Batman on a cliff from 1978.

Had a poem on it when it was originally published because when you think of Batman, you think of poems.

Dan O'Neill - Air Pirate Funnies 2 - final page of the MM v the Air Pirates story.

I dig this page for so many reasons – the loose, exuberant style; the fact that it has the cover shot in the third panel; and the part that it plays in the history of our hobby.

Murphy Anderson - Showcase 55, page 22 - I never expected to own a page from this Silver Age classic! Grundy explains to his henchmen how he managed to escape his interstellar prison. Beautiful Anderson art from his absolute best period.

I voted for published/unpublished: other. Some things would have gotten my votes but I thought they were in the wrong category. Clearly identified pinups, commissions, etc. So I voted for things that were wonderful and, at least as far as I was concerned, in the correct category: Cuthbert's Alex Raymond prelim, Singh's Stelfreeze, Peck's Gonzalez, and Levy's Jones. But everything was worth viewing.

Some great pieces! I picked 5 but my ID keeps logging me out so that by the time I add the 5 selections I get a message saying I am logged out. Not sure if it CAF or my computer not holding my login ID but it is keeping me from voting. I will keep trying to cast my votes!

Checked out Cover category so far, haven't voted yet. But I'm seeing one cover I used to own (Dazzler #18) and one I was outbid on (grrrr - Futurians #1). Almost took down the Yeates cover several years ago. Can't remember exactly what happened, probably dickering over price, but the deal never got done. Shame that. All around neat stuff!

I've never participated before since I collect so little b&w comic art, but I have to say I found the process fun. How/when are the votes revealed?

Once the polls are closed end of Sunday 24th will post the results on Monday.

I began casting my votes. Before I post what I voted for I'd like to comment on the tow changes that I noticed this year.

First, I like having five votes instead of three. You still have to narrow down some tough competition, but those two extra votes help (thumbs u

Second, I especially like that I can review my votes after they have been cast. In years past I would have a pen and paper, names and titles written all over, scribbles here, crossed out there, this one circled, and arrow pointing to a star next to a piece I think I voted for. :frustrated: It was a mess. :shy: MUCH easier this year to review and know for certain what got my vote. :preach::golfclap:

Thanks again to Brian and Bill & Co. for setting this up for th benefit of the OA community :foryou:

My Favorite Published/Unpublished: Covers of 2015 are:

Dean Abraham's Catwoman 5 Cover Guillem March - It seems every piece Dean posts to CAF I want. Our collecting wants are very similar. (thumbs u

James Bella's Concrete: Land and Sea wraparound cover by Paul Chadwick - CONCRETE is one of the best written comics published. This cover shows that it was also one of the best illustrated series as well. With art like this on the covers and interiors it is a book that I've gone back to on more than one occasion. (thumbs u

Hans Eikanger's All-New Wolverine #1 variant cover - X-23 by Keron Grant - I just like it. Wish it had a better scan posted. (thumbs u

David Peters's Wonder Woman #23 cover by Cliff Chiang - Cliff Chiang knocks out another home-run cover. (thumbs u

Kolin V's Death of Wolverine #4 Cover - McNiven/Leisten, Wolverine, classic pose, (thumbs u
