Robot Man Posted June 10, 2018 Author Share Posted June 10, 2018 Most of you know how much I love MAD magazine. The basis for my collecting gene if you will. First run I ever completed. So what do Ido when I had them all? Why go after the ton of imitators, rip offs and money grabbing heirs to the throne. Other Eric’s Help thread in the magazine thread inspired me to do this. Here I will present these many attempts to top the king of satire magazines. Since I don’twant To hog Eric’s cool thread, I will just post my stuff here. After Kurtzman left MAD he started this cool publication. Humbug. Slightly smaller than a regular comic and priced at a money grubbing 15 cents. Full of great art by Bill Elder, Jack Davis, Al Jaffee and others,it was a pretty quality publication. Sadly it only lasted a scant 11 issues. 9 comic book size and two full size magazine issues. Robot Man Posted June 10, 2018 Author Share Posted June 10, 2018 (edited) Going to finish off Kurtzman today. After Humbug, Kurtzman started HELP Magaqzine. This was a little more "adult" MAD magazine. It was rather a little photo/joke orientated. Plenty of killer art though. The artists from Humbug (Elder, Davis, Jaffee and Roth) followed him over. As the small run of only 26 issues progressed, He started to feature up and coming artists. Several issues had Wonder Warthog by Gilbert Shelton. Other future underground artists like Jay Lynch Skip Williamson and a young man by the name of Robert Crumb. Pictured here is the scarce issue #1 and issue #22 from 1965. The latter issue sporting a great bald Beatles cover also featured probably Crumb's first comic book appearance. This issue has two features including the first appearance of Fritz the Cat. Robot Man Posted June 10, 2018 Author Share Posted June 10, 2018 When HELP folded, Kurtzman partnered up with Hugh Heffner who was a big satire fan. This partnering produced Trump. Very short lived (only two issues). A very "high brow" slick magazine with a cover price of 50 cents (double what MAD cost at the time). One of Bill Elder's finest pieces was featured in #1. This included a lavish full color "fold out". If you look carefully, there is a depiction of Alfred E Neuman with a woman's bra as ear warmers! Kurtzman and Elder started a wonderful feature in Playboy called "The Adventures of Little Annie Fanny" A fairly long running feature that also had guest artists like Russ Heath and Frank Frazetta. Robot Man Posted June 11, 2018 Author Share Posted June 11, 2018 Today I am going to spotlight probably the best known and longest running MAD immator Cracked Magazine. First issue came out in 1958. Just a couple years after MAD changed to a magazine. Ironically, most of the MAD imators also started (and sometimes ended in 1958). A blatant rip-off from the start. Copying the MAD style all the way down to the border around the edges. They even adopted a “mascot” like MAD by the name of Sylvester P. Smithe. The main artist was John Severin. He did a lot of work for Atlas/Marvel when EC folded. He found new home with Cracked. Although it was a poor second cousin to MAD, it featured a lot of great artists such as Severin, Heath, Everett, Burgos, Ward and others. I remember it being a little harder to find on the newstands as s kid. MAD was always out front and center but Cracked had a little spotty distribution and I missed a lot of them on the racks. You probably also know how much I love the weird, obscure mail away stuff, here is a real tough one. From #7 in 1958 this ad for a Cracked T-Shirt. was only offered in a few early issues. I don’t own one. I don’t know anyone who has one. And, I have never seen one! The MAD version that came out at the same time is just slightly more attainable. I have one of those. Robot Man Posted June 12, 2018 Author Share Posted June 12, 2018 (edited) Today, I will feature the third biggest satire magazine, Sick Magazine. Sick was first published in 1960. They got into the game a couple years late. Fairly long running, it ran until 1980 and published 134 issues. The main man over there was Joe Simon. Sick also featured a lot of art by Jack Davis and Angelo Torres. As you can probably tell by the covers, Sick had a very political and celebrity slant. Sick also had a mascot like MAD and Cracked. His name was Huckleberry Fink. His catch phrase was “Why try harder?” Here is the first 5 issues or so including s few more notable ones. Was a bit “high brow” compared to most of these. Aimed at a little higher age bracket. Pretty lousy contents but did featured some nice Jack Davis art. I love the first issue is called an “anniversary issue”. The Playboy reference on #4 is kind of funny as well. Here are all but two issues as far as I can tell. Nude girl in the corner of #1 is a nice touch... Of note, a number of these magazines have small grease pencil prices on them. These were purchased at a local used book store when I was around 11 years old that my dad took me to. I remember him showing me comics that he read during the war with the same prices on them at this store. Oh, if I only knew then what I know now...
