Indeed. Was checking out the pre-Batman Tecs and noticed the Billy Wright Tec 16 has quite a spine split. Love me some Billy Wright but is it still a 7.0?

Was that split there at the time of slabbing, or is it related to SCS? That's Promise-Collection-level softness if it was graded that way out of the gate.

No dog in this hunt, but out of curiosity looked at the HA scan.

I'm pretty sure this book doesn't suffer from SCS.  It has a secure brace on the spine (viewable in enlargements of back cover).  Are the grader notes available?  This would probably be the easiest way to find out.

Was looking at this Signature Auction listing here and it's pretty clear that they must be pulling up incorrect Overstreet valuations for this book here:  :gossip:

https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/suspense-comics-8-continental-magazines-1945-cgc-fn-55-cream-to-off-white-pages/a/7279-94194.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515

Golden Age (1938-1955):Horror, Suspense Comics #8 (Continental Magazines, 1945) CGC FN- 5.5 Cream to off-white pages....

Instead of showing the Fine valuation for this book at $1,623 they are showing only the $150 valuation which is for the Atlas copy of Suspense 8, and not this Continental Magazine copy of Suspense 8.  doh!

Nope, not helpful. But the original Heritage listing has the split plainly visible.

My suspicion is that the split must've been clearly there when graded; barring other flaws that's probably the reason for the 7.0 justification.

The lack of notes for a book of this calibre (pedigree, interest & age) seems incredible. (shrug)

Any surprises from the results of last night’s weekly auction? I didn’t follow many books, but did follow the Cap 74. Overstreet gave it a pretty big price jump in this year’s guide, which perhaps contributed to the book going for only 1.5 x Guide. This had been a pretty consistent 3 x Guide book before the price jump.

its funny how the CGC census changed our view of the world: Overstreet still calls this a scarce book, but according to the census, there seems to be a lot of these out there

I regret selling my 5.0 copy.

This seems notable ...  Chamber of Chills #19 CGC 2.5 @ $10,800 ...

Yes, this book's definitely NOT for me as I totally don't understand the prices being paid for it.  ???

Especially since it is certainly not scarce by any definition of the word as it seems to show up in every single auction and already has well over 100 graded copies in the census.  Not too surprising about the population count though, as I heard that this book might possibly have been part of a warehouse find back in the day.  (shrug)

Nice to see that both low grade Restored PLOD books and low grade Qualified books can still fetch nice premiums and multiples to condition guide:  :applause:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Superhero, New York World's Fair Comics #1940 (DC, 1940) CGC Apparent GD+ 2.5 Slight (C-1) Off-white to white pages....

Golden Age (1938-1955):Superhero, Weird Comics #3 (Fox Features Syndicate, 1940) CGC Qualified FR/GD 1.5 Cream to off-white pages....

These two books sold for $1,680 and $810 respectively which are strong prices considering their grade and non-Universal status.  (thumbsu

Then again, I was also watching the Four Color Flash Gordon books which had a nice showing as they all tended to finished up in the $800 range, but nowhere close to the $2K to $3K price range which similar issues (albeit slightly higher graded copies) managed to fetch at CC last year.  :whatthe:

Perfect case in point being the Four Color 512 Flash Gordon book, where the CGC 9.2 graded copy sold this past weekend for only $840:  :frown:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Adventure, Four Color #512 Flash Gordon (Dell, 1953) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages....

While this slightly higher CGC 9.4 graded copy sold for a whopping $2,725 in a CC Event Auction back in the Spring of 2021:  :applause:

So much so for people who say that Heritage is always top dog in terms of getting the strongest prices for their consignors.  At least, not so much with the Flash Gordon's in this particular case here.  (shrug)

Then again, it MUST have been the QES sticker that shot this copy so far up into the stratosphere.

There are some collectors who will bid the farm on a 9.4 copy but zero for a 9.2 copy.

Oh, come now, let's not be so modest.............there's probably even some here who will bid the farm on a 9.6 copy, but yet see a 9.4 copy as being more worthless than used soiled toilet paper.  lol  :takeit:

Yes, Harvey file copies. I bought a bunch but overlooked this at the time…:sorry:

Cool cover but I still don’t get the hype. There can’t be that many Misfits fans that are GA comic collectors. (shrug)

Decent cover but not even a Top 5 Harvey cover for me nor even a Top 10 PCH cover….I just don’t get the appeal.

Always like to point out this 2009 sale where some astute collector/dealer got 18 copies for $400… guess that’ll buy them a house now at 10k plus each.

I was the first to win a CoC 19 on Heritage back in 2009 for the princely sum of $95.60. Had never appeared before. My big mistake was not continuing to buy copies as they came up since it was obviously on a tear. I even bid on all of them to track. Still have my copy.
