After 18 years, Lana Wachowski has returned to direct the fourth Matrix sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, and we finally know if it was worth the wait. The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions have their fan base, but most would agree that neither film was a satisfying follow-up to the 1999 classic. While The Matrix Resurrections isn't perfect by any means, it's a definite step up from the previous two sequels and more worthy of the Matrix name. The film is packed with great performances, extensive nostalgia, and satisfying action. More importantly, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss slip back into their roles in a way that's so seamless, you'll have a hard time believing it's been nearly 20 years since they donned the black trench coats.

Reeves and Moss are back as Neo and Trinity, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick bring freshness to the series. 1999’s The Matrix redefined blockbusters and left an imprint on cinema that reverberates to this day. The two direct sequels continued to break ground and changed the way studios made movies. The Matrix Resurrections is not like its predecessors, but it subverts expectations and challenges the audience just the same. Brilliantly written and toeing the line between nostalgia pandering and hero-worship, The Matrix Resurrections forces the audience to question the entire purpose of the franchise.
