I seem to recall that the surgery simply wore off after a few issues and he was back to looking like his old self. It's been decades since I read it though. Was there a patchwork Frankenstein version at some stage, in the 2000s? Lots of poorly-conceived attempts at injecting some variety into the vigilante character that were short-lived.
