The Gaines file copies certainly.  In my experience with Silver Age, not so much for the Random House archives/Dell file copies.

Can confirm re. Gold Key / Random House FCs.

For Magnus and Doctor Solar, at least, the FCs are nearly all 9.0-9.4.

Rather, the best pedigrees for those titles (for 9.6/9.8 books) are Pacific Coast, Twin Cities, White Mountain and Boston.

Which Eldon is this?  I their is more than one.

I'm still trying to get that straight.  As previous threads have explored, there were the following:

  • Eldon Dedini (cartoonist for Playboy magazine), many of his books are signed "Dedini"
  • Eldon Hamann (1934-1987)
  • Eldon Tuffenstamer (who's cursive writing seems awful similar to the cursive signature copies).

My current thinking is that the majority of books that people call "Eldons" are from Tuffenstamer but I'm happy to be corrected.

There's definitely more than one.

Adamstrange is correct. There are numerous examples of 9.6 and 9.8 copies from non-pedigrees with writing on the front. In fact I can think of an example where there is small first name written on the front cover,

Here's a 9.6 I sold on Heritage, one of three census topping 9.6s, the only one with a well-placed date stamp:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Humor, Four Color #328 Donald Duck (Dell, 1951) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages....

One of the others:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Humor, Four Color #328 Donald Duck (Dell, 1951) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages....

Hmm...yeah. It's a 9.2 (shown on p. 11 in this thread).

Question is whether it was just pulled from this auction or already sold privately?

BTW - that 1.5 sold for *stupid* money. I don't get it.

No Flash 96, though every other book around that is listed. Wonder if some are getting plucked?

Also, what did the Flash 104 1.5 sell for?

Are you confident that your wallet can take the hit for any of the Police Comics that might eminate from this Promise Collection here?  hm

As per your post below, how did you make out in your quest for the Chinatown copies, or are you going to ditch them like yesterday's old lover and go after your fresh new love:  :luhv:  lol

Chinatown was a strike out....:(

Well, unlike most of you who tends to go for the long time classic favorites, I guess I always like to go for the underdogs since they seem to be much more underrated and underappreciated.  hm

As such, I have always tended to favor the PL 23 cover over the PL 17 cover and in a similar vein, the Blue Beetle 52 cover with the beautiful blend of colors over the long recognized classic cover BB54.   :luhv:   :takeit:

Then again, maybe it's simply nothing more than my senses becoming more muted and bored after seeing the PL 17  and BB 54 covers being highlighted for almost 50 long years now.  zzz  (shrug)

Well the 9.4 went for 120k what 2 years ago? but that looked a little better than this one as I recall.

I know it’s a bit nitpicky and this is still an astoundingly gorgeous copy but those little beginnings of staple tears that I see bother me in a 9.6.  As i recall the 9.4 had a perfect cut too.

That said it says 9.6, and we know enough people care even if we don’t to make it matter, and at this point in time I think this copy has to get at least 150k, but probably ends up closer to 200k.

So I guess I’m going to have to be happy with my lowly vg copy that I paid $25. for 40 years ago...

For that 150k, I’d rather have a nice hot rod and a couple vintage bikes instead...

I’m with you on the BB 52 over the 54. But I can’t think of much of anything that tops PL 17 in that genre. I never get tired of looking into Sandra’s eyes...

Even through the slab when I hold her up close to my ear I can hear her whisper seductively  “save me Scott”...

Since we are all adults here, the Mods would hopefully not banish you to the CGC sin bin if you finish Sandra's line here:

Agreed, Bob.  It's just so f'ing cool.  It's beyond cool.  When I was a freshman and first saw it in SotI in my high school library.I went nuts.  I've owned 2 or 3 over the years, but this is just too much.
