No, everybody does not know that. Had you asserted instead that the majority of golden age comics were geared to a male audience, you'd have better footing. The beginnings of the golden age coincided with the dominance of the successful strip reprint books like Ace, Popular, King, Magic, Popular, and Super Comics, not to mention Famous Funnies. These were geared towards younger audiences - period. That means boys and girls alike. Admittedly, during the height of the golden age, superheroes came to dominate more and more, but publishers astutely sought to attract more female readers with features girls could better relate to, like Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel. Ironically, in the case of the former, William Marston couldn't help himself by infusing Wonder Woman stories with his predilections for what's that? Oh yeah, more bondage - surely the very antithesis of misogyny, yes??  Of course there were titles like Animal Comics and New Funnies, and the wildly-successful titles Four Color, Looney Tunes and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories came into their own during the war years and would go on to outsell even the capes. Archie and his brood, too, for that matter. And then if you allow for the somewhat murky demarcations of the golden age to include the near-postwar era, you're soon to see the romance boom, but before that Millie, Hedy, Rusty, Tessie and other working women would vie for space on America's comic racks. 

I confess: it's with a palpable distaste that I find myself now replying seemingly point-by-point to your missive, because I could honestly argue the pulps most in question are worth collecting, for a wide variety of reasons, but a simple nostalgia for a bygone era doesn't pass the smell test - especially regarding the shudder pulps (which is tragically the hottest area of pulp collecting currently).

I'll propose a collecting parallel: it's an easy enough excursion into a different sort of -ism. I collect a lot of stuff. Take sheet music for example. Decades ago, one of the hottest areas in sheet music collecting was "politely" termed black Americana. Of course, there were less polite terms for it just in my adulthood. I would no more feel blameless or ambivalent nor in any way nostalgic to show my wife's co-workers a stack of prized sheet music which included copies of Turkey in the Straw or Warmin' Up In Dixie. "Oh, don't worry, these are charming. They harken back to a simpler time. Look at the artwork. Isn't it quaint and innocent?"

I think a more scholarly position would be to ask what in the world was going on in America in the 1930's?! Why was there even a market for multiple magazines where women are routinely being tortured and imperiled book after book, story after story?? Was there some pervasive psychosis lingering across the land during those bleak Depression years, fueled by the utter and stark destruction of our national naivete or the persistent traumas from the First World War that returning soldiers unwittingly brought back stateside with them? That seems a tad more enlightened than "Oh look, she's somebody's daughter or sister, and she's being slowly exsanguinated, but isn't she painted marvelously?"

This is the easiest of your counterpoints to ignore. Who are you to police any thread as to what sincere tangents are and are not pursued? That's just - to borrow a word of yours - a ridiculous overreach. 

Most of us here pay attention to people and what they post. I've gotten the impression over the years that you and I would share many of the same views and, in areas where the overlap is not as pronounced, likely cast a better light on some of those contradictory views. I just think you rather hastily and perhaps reflexively defended a position that requires a bit more nuance. 

this will be my last post on the subject. your initial post said that the explanation for collectors getting into pulps now is misogyny. not that it was the reason many of them were created in the first place. if the latter is your assertion, you could do with a lot less words and a bit more clarity. 

if, in fact, that was your position rather than a misstatement, then it is as ridiculous as asserting that collectors of war covers like the ones below are racists or anti-semites. although such a person may collect books like these, most collectors who want these books want them because they are a time capsule of a unique historic moment. and the cover art is also astonishing. as it is on many pulps, regardless of what the cover features. schomburg's fantastic story is the only pulp i own and yes the woman is scantily clad. it does not make me or any of the enormous number of collectors of schomburg's work a misogynist.

Same Truckee Meadows copy that sold in CL last night.  Almost sold for the exact same value it sold for.  I was surprised that it went that high when practically all of the other SA age keys thus far went for much lower than previous.  A FF #1 in CGC 8.5 condition roughly sells for $150k and under before the pandemic.

Yeah that CGC 8.5 FF 1 copy that sold for $350k was an anomaly.  Since then, practically all of the 8.5's that sold later have sold for less.  It was one of those "first to the market" books in that grade during the pandemic at that time from what I recall.

It will actually have the opposite effect you are looking for. It will eventually make things worse. Your ideology is flawed.

From a psychological and societal point of view, talking and working THROUGH things is the best way to deal with them...and it allows you to root out the bad apples along the way. 

And erasing or trying to block history is the best way to repeat it. 

Finally, accusing people who collect Nazi memorabilia of some sort of sadistic attraction to the evil involved is about as logical as accusing a comic collector of collecting WW2 comics and calling them sadistic for doing so. 

 

I know several people who have known Lemmy of Motorhead personally. Some for over 30 years in close friendship. They had nothing bad to say about the man. 

I'll take their word over yours.

The meanings of words are changing. The word "misogynist" doesn't always mean what people say it means anymore. 

It's become a flexible "catch all" phrase along with many other words to accuse and incite in the court of public opinion. 

I collected old romance comics for years. In many if not most of those comics, today, the men today would be called....you guessed it...misogynists.

Except the way romance was portrayed in those comics of yesteryear is the same romantic relationships that the women I know want today. 

Does that make these women misogynists?

I found out about the word when a rock band, the Groundhogs, had a song called I Love You Miss Ogyny. Of course I thought it was a name at first.

I guess because it is very rare and it is relatively early sci fi. He had published a sci fi short story in 1892 before this, so it wasn't his only foray. When I was buying his books 10-20 years ago I never saw it for sale. I do not own a copy although I have most of his other books, you can download and read it public domain. He was "famous" (100+ years ago) for books about Georgia mountain folk and other frivolity and the occasional serious issue. I never met him needless to say, he died in 1919. I can't see a lot of ease going on here.

The TTA had a colour breaking hole in the centre of the cover.  #freegradernotes 

The SS #10 could have been in a 9.6 holder and no one would have looked twice.

That's pretty impressive, while prices are generally down ComicLink does get some crazy bids on HG Silver and Bronze. For books that are in demand and only come up for sale a few times a year it only takes 2 to push up prices.

Well, my TTA #90 9.6 sold for $2,800. 
 

This time last year a 9.6 sold on HA for $5,500. 
 

Granted, the HA copy had white pages and a better cover wrap but I don’t know that that would account for a whole 50% off. 
 

So for me personally, yeah they ease quite a bit.

Is CVA becoming a thing now?  I roll my eyes at it, but CAC stickers on slabbed coins is seen as a legit indicator and collectors pay more for it.  Of course it's headed up by the guy who started PCGS.  I'm not sure who's behind CVA.
