Being a lurker=staying low in the trench.

Being a poster=popping your head up in no-man's land, and hoping a bullet doesn't find you.

Being a lurker = normal infantry, knows their place. Some wisdom. Learning fast.

Being a poster = day one Private barging into a General's meeting and telling them you're in charge now because you clearly know more about this war thing. Oh yeah, and your uniform is back-to-front and you ate the soap at breakfast.

It’s a shame that a thread with a potentially very constructive purpose has, once again, descended into a toxic, explosive, verbal fragfest.

This thread was not created with any altruistic purpose in mind. Context is key.

Very true.  But, this type of conversation is in a grey area, and it can be diverted into a constructive or toxic direction from its starting point.

Sadly, increasingly the latter.

I don't see the fuss. If people want to lurk, let them lurk. If they are too timid to post and can't stand their ground, then maybe posting is not for them.

No one is preventing lurkers from joining in. Established posters have all taken the plunge at one time. It's not a crime to participate and it's not a big deal not to.

Take what you want from this place, if it means lurking, often that is the most sensible and drama free option.

Yes this is seeking a solution without a problem.  In any group there are talkative people and quiet people.  No one goes up to the quiet people and says "You!  Yes you!  Why arent you talking???"
People are different and that's good.

This is certainly true. However, if there are aspects to this place that actively work against people taking part, isn't that worth looking into? It's no different than the talk of many long-time, productive members who have decided to stop posting here - wouldn't it be good to learn why that is happening, and if the reasons are something the group doesn't support, doing something to change it?

I know several old school boardies in person and many of them don't post here much because some of the membership turns them off.

Some of them drifted away from the hobby or to other venues ( social media ) to talk about comics.

Some of them really only used this place to sell and still do so privately as opposed to running sales threads.

This place is mostly easier to jump in than it was when I started...back then there were people who would actively haze newbies...especially if they came in guns blazing.

Heck, the OP used to refer to newbies as "turds".

Not really.  Some people like to live in the desert, some dont.  There's no need to look into why.
A lot of human problems come from people trying to 'fix' things when there is no real problem needing to be fixed.

Exactly, and this is why this thread is baloney from the get go.

What if the ones wondering and creating threads about why people leave were the ones partially responsible for it in the first place? meh
