I believe the current argument as it stands is that McFarlane is coming out with new 7" Page Punchers toys, and each comes with a comic book. His toy line has a new series of Flash Page Punchers, and the Flash has a new design that is "McFarlane inspired" and comes with a brand new Flash #1 comic that is not a reprint of anything existing. Same as the Batman/Constantine/Black Adam that was in the first set of 7" Page Punchers - those came with a brand new comic as well that was not a reprint.

The speculation/argument as I understand it is that, since these are new comics that are being done by some legitimate talent for DC, and since the creative teams are basically being hired/directed by Todd, it could be an indication that he'll be taking on a role in the comics side of the house, not just the toys.

Rumors have been flying about Todd McFarlane taking over DC Comics, and while that hasn’t happened just yet, it’s learned McFarlane is publishing comic books for The Flash, Black Adam, and Injustice 2.

The comic books are a part of McFarlane Toys’ “Page Punchers” line where the 7-inch action figure line features comic books for The Flash, Black Adam, and Injustice 2.

The Black Adam action figure line and comic book is already out and features Black Adam, Batman, Superman, and John Constantine.

The Injustice 2 comic book and line features Batman and Green Arrow and gets released Sept, 15.

The Flash line gets released on Oct. 3 and features The Flash, The Atom, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave, and worth a note for The Flash line is the descriptions state the characters are based on the exclusive included comic designed by McFarlane Toys. See below.

McFarlane Toys already has a “Page Punchers” 3-inch line that comes with previously published DC Comics books, so the 7-inch line will feature original Todd McFarlane-published DC Comics.

It has been reported David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery are now targeting DC Comics as the company is apparently a big failure, so according to former Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver, Van Sciver is predicting that Todd McFarlane will take over DC Comics, where possibly McFarlane will license DC Comics from Warner Bros. Discovery.

DC used to have its own action figure company, DC Direct, but that was kiboshed, and now McFarlane Toys has the license for the DC action figures, and he’s doing a damn fine job, so maybe Todd McFarlane will also eventually publish all the DC Comics, which would be a most welcome change.

Rumors have also offered The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman might be in line to take over DC Comics.

DC has opened a new Direct Distributor, signing a global agreement with Canadian company Universal Distribution, the companies announced.  The new agreement will take effect in October 2022, when retailers will be able to begin placing orders with Universal for delivery of DC products in January and beyond.

 

Under the new deal, Universal plans to not only service comic retailers in Canada, but also in the U.S. and other territories, Universal Distribution CEO Angelo Exarhakos told ICv2.   

Universal is currently distributing DC comics as a sub-distributor of Lunar Distribution, which until this new deal, has been the only Direct Distributor of DC comics in North America since Summer 2020 (see “DC Cutting Off Diamond”).  Lunar serves retailers in Canada both directly and through Universal.

“This agreement enables us to provide retailers with the tools they need to grow their DC business,” Universal’s Exarhakos said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “Our primary focus has always been to work closely with our key partners to help retailers provide a great experience for their customers.”

DC Vice President Sales and Marketing Nancy Spears also commented on the deal.  “Our new partnership with Universal is in line with DC's overall strategic vision intended to improve the health of, and strengthen, the Direct Market and grow the number of fans who read comics worldwide,” she said.  “This move sees DC doubling down on its distribution strategy, and further mitigating operational and supply chain disruptions.  We remain committed to the Direct Market and look forward to growing the network of comic book retailers get the best comic books and graphic novels to fans in the most efficient and seamless manner.”

DC’s roster of Direct Distributors for comics and graphic novels now includes Diamond UK, Lunar Distribution, and Universal Distribution; DC also has a relationship with Penguin Random House Publisher Services for graphic novels worldwide.
