I had a beater copy of Strange Tales 73 a few years ago, and sold it. I cant say I instantly regretted it, but thanks to the folks in the Pre-Hero Marvel thread, my interest was re-ignited.  I found this copy earlier this year, and it was a significant upgrade.

 

Finally I ran across what has to be one of the best Robot covers I know of. Journey into Unknown Worlds #49 has a cover by Russ Heath whose better known for his Silver Age war book covers, but I'm glad he did the cover for this book. 

I used to own a page from the Grottu story. Kirby and Everett, if I recall correctly.

This year I actually dove a little into the OA market and bought some art from some of my favorite artists and comic book series.

I collect mostly variants. I bought some of the rarest variants in my collection last year, so they aren't in the running for this post.

The first, Avengers #196, isn't that rare but I got it for such a great price that it is among my favorite purchases. Also, I didn't know it was a variant when I bought it. It was part of a group of around 15 Avengers from the period. I bought them because I am trying to recreate my childhood collection of Avengers, which started at #1 and went to the last issue of 1980. It included all specials, Giant-Size, and annuals. When I opened this one up, I was surprised to see the Mark Jeweler's insert. Three other comics in the same group had them, so I was quite happy. 

The second is the first Avengers I ever owned, #93 but in a UK edition. Again, not spectacularly rare but it is one of my favorite comics of all time.

The last photo is a group I bought all at once. I like Corben and I love hard to find newsstands. I've been looking for this group as newsstand editions for a couple of years. It was very surprising to see them all at once from the same seller, after not seeing any of the issues from anyone.

Started collecting Archie this year and love the bright colors that can be found on issues like the Archie 99. I drive past a horse ranch on the way to work every day which makes the Pep 54 extra special. My buddy got a sunburst Les Paul, and I got my sunburst FF 11. : )

So far all my favourite purchases have been absolute low grade trash that I spruced up in order for them to be the best possible display pieces for a collection ;)

Bought this BB28 for super cheap (in a pile of some other wrecked books)

Turned it into this proper graded grail (found a real back cover for it - you can see it partially folded over the upper left corner on the front cover, added in a reproduction front cover)


Bought this one coverless and missing a few wraps (though the first story featuring her origin and Ares is basically all there, minus the intro splash page that doesn't really impact the story) and just added in a reproduction cover. I figured it was a very good time to get at least some copy of what is basically DC's other epic Trinity #1 book (In my opinion woefully undervalued when compared to Superman #1 and Batman #1)



and the last I guess would be this epic grail I actually have zero interest in   It was a grail my best friend always wanted but could never afford, but he finally got it in a trade this year (partial trade towards an AF15 he was selling)...unfortunately sudden family obligations meant he had to sell this before it even arrived back from the signing/grading. I bought it off him in order to keep it 'in the family' so he can have visitation rights  Will sell it one day, but for now I guess it now sits among my biggest books in my collection.

1) Possibly my favorite golden age cover and by far the best condition in my collection for the era.

The original art is the cover to HOS 134. I've been collecting higher grade HOS comics for a while, so it was cool to add cover art.

It was a pretty cool year picking up stuff - I have no complaints!

After the huge ordeal I went through trying to get a Chamber of Chills 19, I finally ended up with one with a Boardie’s help:

In 2014 I sold off my comic and art collection to fund our restaurant - and had no regrets, except for letting go of this one Gonzalo Mayo painting that I loved. After we got our feet under us with the business, I offered (through CLink) to buy it back every October for six years - and this was the year The seller accepted! So it’s back in my office where I get to see it once a day again.

And lastly, a hard-won auction item - I personally think this is the best Sabrina cover out there from the 70’s - it has a cool PCH feel, and it’s just a HUGE image (14”x22”) I got lucky on the win, and am proud to own it!

Dude! I haven’t seen that Gambit poster for 25+ years! Nice pickup! There is also a matching Rogue one to go with that Gambit poster Quesada made!

I haven't bought a page in a couple years, and my commissions, which are not high dollar, have slowed way down.  However, this Thanksgiving, my 2 sons gave me these 2 beauties.  Kind of an early retirement gift.  These close up my ASM 6-375 run.  They went overboard on the 129 9.0, but as my youngest says (he's 34) "anything worth doing is worth overdoing!".
