This was originally a $5.00 raw purchase in the 90's. First magazine sized book I sent to CGC just after they expanded in to the mag size arena. IIRC at the time it was the highest graded but no more. There was a time back then when The Kirby issue #11 was one of the most sought after issues of the title. Times have changed. As for the original post: My opinion: I just don't see any of the issues hitting 10K except as an outlier. Even if #10 did in 9.8 not sure it would hold there? They really ain't comics and I feel for many simply lack the required cachet. Now if there were enough in High Grade to be manipulated into the next hot thing well then who knows

Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
MAY1979 replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
Battlestar Galactica #1 - Late least year the regular/standard edition CGC 9.8W was around $100, the Whitman 3-Pack Distributed w/diamond price area + blank UPC was $150-$200. I see now the standard is going for $410-$430. They are all from same seller which gives me some cause for pause but the CGC certs numbers were different https://www.ebay.com/itm/265669147158 https://www.ebay.com/itm/265660949404 https://www.ebay.com/itm/265644747285 The book has the Census Pop sweet spot numbers Speculators and Flippers love. Enough high grade supply to easily manipulate, but not enough that the book is everywhere. Books CGC Label CGC Total Avg. Grade 10 9.9 9.8 9.6 9.4 9.2 9.0 8.5 8.0 7.5 7.0 6.5 6.0 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.8 1.5 1.0 0.5 1. Battlestar Galactica 1 (3/79, Marvel Comics) Adaptation of the first episode of the television series, part 1 of 3 Universal 1,476 9.29 1 509 405 183 98 85 63 34 39 13 11 9 6 11 3 2 2 1 1 Wish I had held out for a copy with a perfect wrap of the classic Cockrum cover but I got negotiated a nice deal on this one in 2021 when book was cold, so no complaints. P.S. My avatar on this forum was taken from a Galactica #1 cover scan but in my case the image is a nod to Avengers 181. -
Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
MAY1979 replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
60 days ago in March's Iron Man he was portrayed as hero.... At this point not sure why the character/property should have any fans as he's portrayed 180 degrees differently at the drop of a hat. -
As child I got a copy of #9 from the discount bins of my LCS. The corner box was the first image of Adam Warlock I ever saw and I was like why does that dude look so mad...

eBay can be a roll of the dice as the polluted with garbage Original Comic Art category is avoided by many buyers who simply don't have the time or patience to separate wheat from chaff.

What amount do you feel is (or was) the going rate? My opinion is its probably within 10% of FMV
-
IMHO Nope! Given what I see in the pics if not done properly pressing might even lower the grade. I guess the C&P might make the back look a little nicer?? My feeling is the risk is significant for at best what will be a minor rewards probably not even meriting a .5 jump. Of course, I'm no expert in pressing but there are some here who are.

This Week in Your Bronze Age Collection!!
MAY1979 replied to TupennyConan's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
Occasionally Marvel had new art commissioned for their reprint books. Here are 2 examples from Mr Rosa's old collection: When Ditko returned to Marvel this was his first task: I am curious to know why Marvel used what appears to be a generic inventory cover rather than the Hulk 130 original I have great memories of fishing this one out of 4 for $1.00 section at my first trip as child to a comic book store. Never thought I'd find a high grade copy of it: -

Love the 70's early 80's Marvel Reprint titles! They deserve their own thread -
As TV and Film related goes Key Trek 1 is genuine blue chip. Unlike Star Wars 1 supply is ultra low My opinion given how difficult to find in 9.0 or above the growth potential is huge. I feel probable a 9.2 with WHITE pages 5 years from now will b a 25-30k book. hold on to it tighly or you will have huge regrets

Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...

5% of $1500 is $75. The quality of either for that amount is horrid -
Thanks! Now i can revisit Mankuta's inane musings from turn o' the century

Mike's is a great site but the data ofttimes is not accurate, I've seen this over and over again with on-sale dates. Of course not being accurate can easily be said about Overstreet, CGC and the GCD Edit: After doing more research; #84 is confirmed as Miller's first/earliest work that was published however it's unclear if WW64 or Zone84 was on-sale first. As Western (Gold Key / Whitman) did have their own distribution channel for non-newsstand sales it's plausible Zone 84 was out a week prior to WW64. Also plausible Zone 84 was on-sale at same time or a week even 2 later. I'm not sure we'll ever truly know which was on-sale first and where, but I will say Zone 84 is a significantly more difficult book to find in any grade than WW64 and big-time Miller fans should want Zone 84,85 and WW64

Copper's Heating/Selling Well on Ebay

Nice. Hope there is at least one "room" dedicated to his 1978-1981 work. I'm big fan of his draftsman-esque era.

Good logical point. However I thought same in 2007 and in terms of art dropping it did not occur. I think worst case mid 6 figures items and higher might slow a bit. What I would really like is to be able to go to a con again with 1K in pocket and actually have enough to buy a single late 70's Superhero page again When I started in art I could bring home 3 DC or 2 Marvel Bronze covers for that ... Anyhow its not going to happen!

Paramount's STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS starring Anson Mount (2022)
MAY1979 replied to Bosco685's topic in The Movie Forum
Watched EP1 just now. Trek shows usually start off slow and get better over time, this one started off as solid. Really enjoyed it, cast has nice on-screen chemistry. For me it showed great respect for the original. Chapel is a hoot! Very Entertaining!- 123 replies

Sending CBCS slabs into CGC

CGC is rather secretive about things. I stand by my original statement. -

Thanks for the response. Perhaps one day CGC will add but for now they seem intent on dedicating their time towards Memorex VHS tapes -
Show us your CGC White Pagers! WHITE PAGE Appreciation Thread!
MAY1979 replied to mosconi's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
@valiantman Hi, I'm curious; is there a way to potentially pull Page Quality data from CGC using CGCDATA? As an example to determine the percentage of CGC slabbed White Page Silver Age books from 1961-1967 ? -
Merely curiosity? Or is there another reason for asking? Overstreet has noted it for at least 28 years - I went back to 1994 the oldest one I have handy. I first recall seeing it mentioned in the early-mid 1990s in CBG (Comic Buyers Guide). Miller has confirmed it as well in interviews. For a long time no one seemed to care that much about the Zone issues, but in moderns times its must have 1st this and 1st that. Serling by Miller - Cool!

Sending CBCS slabs into CGC

IMHO the only certain way to remove potential bias is to deslab before submitting.
