To clarify what this person means, sometimes the book inside that inner well is sandwiched tight but the whole inner well as whole still moves (does the contents shift at all when you tip the book upside down?). SCS or shaken case syndrome as people have come to call it, can happen and means the books could have shifting, thus causing the pages to appear that way and perhaps larger tears at the staples.

Are those staple tears common for 9.8? They do seem a bit much but I have still seen other 9.8 books with similar. If you are really concerned, return it and look for a better copy.

    This.

I have a book with a similar problem. I have no idea who, how, or why this small section was trimmed (if it actually is trimmed). But it definitely got hit with a Purple label. People have argued that this shouldn't be considered trimming since it doesn't appear to have been done to enhance the appearance of the book, it's just...weird. I dunno.

I think we assume all trimming was done to improve the book for other collectors...what if this was just some kid who didnt like the edge wrinkling or wear or whatever so they took an exacto-knife and removed the edge? Definitely was cut by someone at some point so the book has been altered. Maybe to us it doesn't enhance the look but to the kid at the time it does.

When I was a kid I uses to cut the corners off my hockey cards because the edges were always getting dinged and bent so I rounded them off (I was a dumbo kid like the above kid was and before you get concerned that I ruined good cards, 99% were the 90's pro set stuff so no worries).

My grades were in :) days ago! Last year even!

  4. Agree with the above...a CGC 10 of a book less that 10 years old is not the same as one older. If we knew the book, I could assist in past sales data info as well as suggesting a possible starting value. When in doubt, price high. If you are actively advertising to sell and get nothing, your price is not right and that tells you dropping it is needed in order to sell.

  5. I know that CGC grading can take some getting used to. What I would do is pick a couple of these books you speak of (the ones that command good value in 9.8 but case cost or less if they fall to a 9.2). See how it goes. Either your eye will hold up and you will be happy or you will learn your grading is perhaps too lenient and you know that selling these books raw is the way to go.

As for selling the "utter junk", sell off in lots but sprinkle in some books that don't sell from "the rest". So a collector sees some decent bronze age stuff they might want, mixed with the junk and if priced appropriately, you can move those books. For example I sold a lot of 10 Spider-Man books for $50 the other day. 90s spideys but I tossed in a mid grade issue #103 and the lot sold quick. Way I figure it, selling 103 by itself might have yielded $30-40 and I would have never gotten $20 for the rest (or it would have taken a while)..

  6. Hi all,

I am wanting to know about the Rocketeer graphic novel from 1985...does it just contain reprints/collect all of the stories from the Pacific Comics Presents issues? Is there any new content in this graphic novel (ie some reprinted stories plus new). Thanks!

  7. Tough for me, not many standouts. I narrowed in on Popular Teenagers 21, Confessions 8 and Popular Teenagers 19 simply because of the female imagery and the white cover backgrounds which I like a lot. I also went with True To Life 15 (war and romance work for me) and Top Love 18 (again the white background with the colours and the woman smoking...I just like it).

I can see why Top Love 8 gets love (it was probably next on my list) along with Popular Teenagers 5 but the business of that cover (too much top text) and the blues on Top Love 8 pushed them lower for me personally.

  8. For those who care, my top 3 were easy...Popular Teenagers 15 is my favourite, with the snow and car scene. Followed by Flaming Western Romances and Top Love Stories (just two ya don't see often and I like the images and way they are drawn). After that it was hard for me...many are kind of plain and ones I would put near the bottom of my LB Cole list. I ended up picking True To Life Romances 10 (creepy broken neck girl with a nice black background cover) and Confessions Of Love 14 (who doesn't love a bunch of flames in the background).

  9. I don't think poorly pressed is an opinion...they seem to provide some of the reasoning in the other defects (water logged, moisture). Whoever pressed this ruined the paper in this manner. Rippling and other things like markings imprinted into the cover are another...CGC graders have seen enough pressing now to decipher if the flaws were caused by that or by reading, and them putting poor pressing identifies that specifically as the cause.

Never use a presser who has not pressed for more than 5 years OR

Never use a presser who has pressed less than 500 books in their life AND

Always be wary of a presser who uses a press that cost them less than $100.

    Those are my golden rules

Thank you, Comicginger!  This is really what I was looking for.  I was at a loss for most of those values as well.  I do have a few Archies featuring swimsuit covers, etc.  In the next few days, I'll post some scans of the New Mutants 87 and others.  Just really trying to see what (if any) would be worth getting professionally graded for sale.  I should have added, I am looking to sell off my collection.  I was just going to list everything with Everything But The House (EBTH; they are local to me, and have pretty good national/international coverage.  I've seen some pretty run of the mill collections go for several hundred dollars), but wanted to have some stand-out pieces if possible.  Interesting side note: I see that you are in Canada.  I grew up in western Washington state, and just recently realized that some of my comics, especially the Archies, are Canadian Price Variants.  Is there a market for those for Canadian collectors?

There are definitely collectors of Canadian price variants. Usually it pertains to key issues (for example, the CPV for Amazing Spider-Man 252 is quite desired in high grade). But I am sure if posted you'd be surprised who might come up with a decent offer because they have to have it.

  11. As others mentioned, condition is everything. Familiarizing yourself with that aspect will help. The only book I see of real interest is New Mutants 87. If in high grade (no creasing, bends, folds, stains, multiple spine tick marks) you could be looking at that value, maybe more.

The rest of the issues listed...I am at a loss as to how comicbase came up with those values. I would think you would have a hard time getting even $1-2 each for the rest of those. Archie and related stuff is only highly desired (and valuable) when it is from the 40s and early 50s or contains some sort of desired cover (usually swimsuit or some sort of innuendo related image on the cover). Otherwise good luck selling Archie comics for more than $1-2, if not less.

  12. Tough question. Are there any keys in the run? I would value those appropriately but as for the rest, I would try to gauge what individual issues sell for. If a random filler book in mid grade seems to sell once in a while on ebay for $4-8, I would be shooting for the lower end of this price considering I am making an offer to buy it all. Generally if you get a lot or a run of 100+ books (and the condition is VF or better on most), getting something like that in the $3-4 range per issue is good.

And I am applying that logic to a title that is not heavily desired. Obviously if someone is talking about a run of Batman or Spider-Man, that per issue price even in a lot is likely to be double or triple or more

  13. I'll give a quick personal example. CCS pressed a book in my first ever submission a few years back. The book came back a 9.0. It looked fine and a 9.0 is about where I had it placed when I sent it in. I was hoping a press would fix some things and get it closer to a 9.4. I eventually found a presser I liked, sent him the book and he worked on it more and submitted. The book returned a 9.6. So from that experience alone, I decided to spend a little more to get it done right the first time from now on. I don't grade many books at all compared to some people so perhaps their experiences are fine (and I would think if you had mostly 1990-now era books that sure, most of those a quick press is all ya need). But for older stuff, I prefer to spend a little more the first time to know it is the best it can be when I get it back.

    Hi Comicginger1789,

Do you think the $12 pressing service that CGC offers would get a non-color breaking indention like this pressed out?

    Thank you again,

    Paul

I personally prefer to not use CGC pressing. I have seen too many examples of flaws that are still there even after they have pressed it. The thing is, they are pressing books en masse and don't put the same level of care and time that a private presser would. I take this aspect of the hobby seriously. It is not hard to press books but doing it well is the challenge. It is why I am willing to spend $20-30 for the right person to handle my books because I know they are looking them over after and, if needed, using other materials (tack iron, or working on the book more) to get the book to look its best.

I just don't think CCS does this. I think they press and simple defects (along with just making the book lay flat) are fixed but other things like deep indentations which can take some time and sometimes multiple pressings might still remain

    From the rules:

You will have 4 days to get your grades in.  After I record your grades, I will reply to the PM thread so you know that your grades have been recorded.  Only grades from .5 to 9.8 will be accepted.  Grades of 9.9 and 10.0 that are received, will be recorded as a 9.8

Perfect, I thought I had read that in the past. Did not know if this would change with the recent announcements is all. Thanks Mike!
