Popular Post Dr. Balls
I was rooting around some folders going through old artwork stuff and I found these: my buddy is an author and comic book aficionado, so when his second book was coming out (this was 9 years ago), I did a "variant" cover for him. Below are pencils, inks (with zipatone, which was awesome to work with again) and the final colored piece that he turned into a poster to give out to fans. Popular Post NSmith7275
Back in high school days (1988-1990), I really liked Wolverine and Batman. I was always drawing them. I was never particularly good, but I didn't care. All these are from 32-34 years ago. I also was into Felix the Cat. I loved that he was created before Mickey Mouse. I also enjoyed the Aliens movies (only two movies were made by 1990)... I was also into the "V" mini-series that was on television at the time. I don't know what the heck I was doing here, but I was a teenager. So, whatever... Some sort of 'take' on the show. I played tennis in high school, so I drew tennis action from time to time... Popular Post Crimebuster
My new comic Cthulhu vs. Uncle Sam #2 is now live on Kickstarter just in time for Halloween. I wrote this issue, though the interior art was drawn by another artist. I did however do one of the variant covers, which is obviously an homage. I do love homage covers, what can I say. I'm basic like that! Here's the cover I did for this issue: For those interested, here's the regular cover by interior artist Jay Piscopo. Since I didn't draw it myself, I'll put it behind spoiler tags: Spoiler alexgross.com, Flanders82, CJ Design and 3 others

Popular Post alexanderjk
When my son was experiencing an especially rough time this year, so I drew this for him. Our favorite character is DD, and it’s an obvious homage to Miller’s Dark Knight cover (and an homage to my sons’ favorite Spawn cover). Crimebuster
My newest comic The Crimebusters #5 is coming out on Kickstarter on January 30. This is the first issue I haven't drawn myself -- I've brought in a new artist by the name of Mac Radwanski to take over the art from me so I can get the comics out faster. But I still drew one of the variant covers. The Crimebusters is a continuation of the Golden Age "Crimebuster" strip from the Lev Gleason comic Boy Comics, so every issue I do a variant cover with the original logo and numbering. This time, the story features the return of Crimebuster's sidekick Squeeks the Monkey, so I did a cover featuring him. It's also an homage to Gil Kane's classic cover from Rex the Wonder Dog #11. What can I say, I love doing homage covers! I didn't have to change a lot for this one, just swapped Squeeks for Rex, turned the humans into my characters Chuck and Trixie and made them a little bigger, and did a little bit with the background and the mushroom cloud. The dinosaur is 100% Gil Kane. Here it is: alexgross.com, CJ Design and DavidTheDavid

I find this really interesting because the eyeballs are almost identical, yet the gaze is completely different. The more I study eyeball renditions, the more I learn that even the most trivial difference can make a huge impact. Gil kane used to put theses heavy black dots as eyeballs, and I could almost tell if it was gil or not from that small feature alone (not to mention the nostrils). Popular Post gnommando
When I was a little kid in the 90's before I went to college to study art I used to sit for hours trying to draw my favorite images from comics. Spawn comics especially after like #20 were my favorite to try to draw cause the level of detail seemed like it was on a whole different level than all the other comics at the time. I think I thought a lot of detail made art good back then and I tried real hard with very precise hard lines to get every exact detail into what I did. Slowly I figured out I couldn't do it that way. Those details emerge from loose sketching not hard precision. Drawing spawn and that wild cape taught me to really loosen up in my drawing and start to make more expressive lines rather than trying to get everything exact all the time. Now back then I wasn't really into knowing the names of the artists and writers or whatever I just wanted to draw some cool stuff. I did know that Todd McFarlane created spawn and I considered him my art hero. It was only years later when I started being interested in who was doing what that I realized that my real art hero was actually Greg Capullo. That wild cape those loose lines really didn't show up until Capullo took over the pencils. Anyway here's a drawing attempting to reproduce a spawn page that I did as a kid when I was trying to emulate my art hero Greg Capullo.
