If these are "investments" as the IRS is treating them, he has no tax liability. His basis in the books adjusts to market value when it passes from the estate to him. So, his gain would be $0. He will likely get his 1099 and pay 20-something% tax even though he does not owe it...heavy handed (yes, coercion) policy from the IRS. Sorry to thread drift.

Payment was via PayPal - he will 100% get one if it was for goods/services. Those of us who have lived under this draconian tax nonsense already know exactly how this works. People are in for huge surprises

I went to a moving sale yesterday and walked away with these original owner comics for $130 among other goodies. It’s an almost identical FF run to the ones I bought at an estate sale last year. This time around #94 the first Agatha is present!

It wasn't as good as we thought it was going to be but went through an old newsstand distributor's sealed back stock. Out in the woods in Virginia in a garage and basement. Stuff to the ceiling. The comics were sealed boxes from the 1980s - nothing humongous but some good stuff - multiple high grade copies of ASM 265, Masters of the Universe 1, Thor 364, 365, and 366, Peter Parker 101 and a bunch of other things. The guy had owned newsstands in the DC area and retired and took everything into his house. There was So. Much. Porn.

This was the cleanest part:

More. Each of those boxes are sealed distributor boxes with comics in them.

My partner realizing that we have another 50 boxes to go through:

That was one of the issues - we were expecting all sorts of newsstands. There were a bunch but not the monster books. 50 copies of this, for example:
