Well - technically I lucked out all the way around that year.

The first X-Men *story* I ever read was earlier that summer at camp. It was X-Men 129 - first issue of the Dark Phoenix storyline, as reprinted in Classic X-men # 35. Didn't know who any of the characters were - but it was a great place to start.

When I got back from summer camp I had a few weeks of allowance saved up and decided to start collecting comic books.

Hence that multi-pack purchase w/ the Uncanny # 244.

I then picked up Uncanny # 248 and 251 for $.20 apiece at a yard sale (where I was convinced the money book would be the Nick Fury: Agent of Shield (1989) # 1 I'd picked up for that same $.20), and my first actual new issue off the rack was # 252. Collected the new issues clear through to # 320 - and eventually built my run backwards to # 106.

1989-1994 was a really great time to be an X-Men collector.

Saw a couple antique shops while we were out this weekend and stopped in both. The first one had a lot of books and if I had the time I might've gone through the 20+ longboxes of mixed up books. I looked at some in an adjacent case and saw Cable 1 for $95 so I stopped looking. The next place had a stack of 40 hidden pretty well under a magazine rack. He was a nice fellow and wanted only $20 for the stack. I'm glad Jean McIntosh didn't toss her comics out!

When I got back into collecting I learned my lesson with a lackluster duo of Captain Savage and his Leatherneck Raiders 1 and 2 to the tune of $30. In my defense, those were the first books with a 12 cent price on the cover in my collection. I learned my lesson with that purchase. I saw nicer copies for $2 each at a small convention a few weeks later.

I took a look at MCS and if I really want a Cable 1, there's a CGC 9.8 for only $75. The stains on the copy I saw must have come from a rare liquid to add that extra $20 of value.

2 weeks after posting this I got a call from a guy who traded his car (said it was a 2015 Cadillac with 80,### miles) for a Superman 1, some other Superman books, Hulk 181, and some cheap Hulk books. The Hulk 181 was missing the MVS and low grade, I bought it. The Superman 1 was a treasury reprint. I'm inclined to believe the story is true because he had to walk to the store we met at. 

 

So yeah...that happened.

Used to be one of my great honey-holes for a few years. Then the main one by me closed during Covid.

I wasn’t aware that buyers set the prices at estate sales.
