Show off your Uber High Grade UNDERGROUND COMIX !!!

I really don't get it. Why don't you just collect old Penthouse or Hustler issues? At least some of those books are arousing.

+1

When I worked at a comic store, I always wondered why these guys would pay $3-4 for a porno comic, when they could get a Hustler/Penthouse for a couple bucks more. Buy a video fer christ's sake, at least it's got real people in it.

And when did porno comics become undergrounds? That's insulting to UGs. People just trying to justify their porn collection I guess.

Underground comix have had sex and nudity in them from the very beginning. Have you ever read or seen Crumb? They were purchased in headshops and were not meant for the faint of heart and prudes. I think the main difference that you're failing to understand is that these "porno" comics are not used in the same way that a hustler or a penthouse would be used.

The ones I'm talking about are (Cherry included). Having sex and nudity in a comic does not make it porn. UGs had sex in them but they weren't porn.

I collect Cherry because I appreciate the talents of Larry Welz. The art is gorgeous and the stories are funny. It was very ballsy to do what he did. I guess I can only speak for myself but I've never used these comics for "arousal" purposes.

Really? Would you still buy the book if the art wasn't gorgeous?

"Porno comics, in general (like Eros). So no, not all of the books in this thread. "

BTW - I have no idea what "Eros" is. So I can't speak to that title. Maybe you know more about "porno" comics than I do...

Unfortunately you are correct. Working in a comic book store, you have to order what the customer wants, even if it is pathetic.

Let's leave the thread-crapping behind and get back on track.

Not uber high grade, but the nicest copy of this Moscoso gem I've seen. If you've got a nicer copy, please consider selling it to me. :baiting:

One of my favorite artists for the way he played with perspective, color, and depth:

And if it's not clear, I think the real UGs are great, I own and have read many. I just hate when porno comics are lumped in with them. Like a poster said, Bondage Fairies is not an Underground.

Bondage Fairies? What the heck is that? Like I said before, you seem to know FAR more about porno comics than I do. So I'll leave it to the expert to determine whether Cherry is one or not. Personally, I could give a :censored: less. I think its an Underground and I think its cool.

I'll preface this post by saying that thanks to Howard(Eggs Ackley) and some other awesome members my few Underground comics have been slowly turning into a collection.

That said, if anyone has read Cherry, got my slabbed #1 from Eggs (worship) , it is not exactly comparable to the works of Lord Byron. (tsk)

The whole Underground scene grew out of a social movement that used all mediums to break away and point out the injustices and restrictions, perceived or justified, that these artist, writers, painters, directors etc. experienced. Some books are just funny and shocking to read, due to their sexual or violent content. Other books may look similar in style and form, but do try and convey deeper meaning.

To lump all Underground books together and write them off is doing a disservice to yourself. (shrug)

Enjoy them for what they represent, and in many cases, their extreme rarity. <3

I agree with you on this. I was annoyed when I saw the amount of porn comics that were listed in the Fogel Underground Comix Guide. I don't begrudge anyone collecting them, as I personally own a lot of that stuff, as well. I just don't think it necessarily qualifies as underground comix. Most of it was in there because Fogel himself is heavy into the porn books with his publishing company.

Not an expert by means, but I've always considering Cherry an underground for a few reasons. First, Larry Welz was part of the underground comix movement and the first appearance of Cherry is in an underground comix. Also, Cherry was originally published by Kitchen Sink, which was one of the early underground comix publishers, even if later it morphed into more of an independent comics company.

Cherry can be whatever you want it to be. I collect Cherry, and could really care less what others designate it to be.

And by the way, Howard stays out of all the BS that goes on within these boards, is very forgiving, and deserves some kind of award for everything he has done for the hobby.

Amen Brother J, the third reason is in its concept, its an Archie satire/parody. The concept was created for the sake of comedy - not for dudes to get their rocks off.
