This is true, but most of the time, with my trouble buyers, the first sign that there may be trouble is that they have no feedback, or very low feedback, or it was a recently registered account. This last guy had a decent feedback of over 1000, 100% rating. So it surprised me, because usually if I'm stiffed, it's from a newbie or from what I assume is a shill account.

You can setup your account to block new accounts or set a level that’s acceptable to you.

I realize it doesn’t exactly fit the purpose of this list (the guy’s a seller, not a buyer), but I’m so hacked off right now I can’t help myself. He cancelled a confirmed eBay sale by falsely saying there was an error with my shipping address, and then relisted it at almost twice the price. Sent me a message blaming a glitch with the eBay listing template (yeah right — I’ve listed thousands of comics and never had this problem)…

I used "sell similar" recently and forgot to change the price on the second item. It sold very quickly at about 1/2 FMV, but of course I honoured it. It certainly wasn't eBay's fault - it was mine.

Exactly. Because you're a stand-up pro. Even giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, he ripped me off.

Just curious if anyone else blocks buyers for making lowball offers.

I do it and find it to be satisfying.  Especially for offers made on listings that are "buy it now" without "or best offer" and are priced at or below recent sales.

I have an AirBnb/Vrbo House and the only guests I've had trouble with are the ones who haggled for a better deal... even though my house is set at a low price for what it is.  I used to engage with those folks just to get a rental.  No more.  That type of behavior is a red flag. Every one of my bad guests was a haggler.  100% of the bad guests. That is where I learned my lesson... never deal with anyone who asks for a better deal when you are already offering a good deal. Do not counter offer, cut them off.

No question, no excuse me for putting in an offer where you obviously aren't looking for offers. Too lazy, just toss a ridiculous number out there.

My reaction was to reply, "No, and your offer is embarrassing. People say it doesn't hurt to ask. People are wrong. Blocking you now".

But instead I just ignored it, as the "buyer" expected I might.

This piece of work bought a slab from me on Saturday, paid me quickly, and then on Monday morning they sent me a message saying they were charged twice and were unhappy. I told them I don't have any control over eBay charging you and that they should chat with eBay about it. They then made a dispute and said they never received it...despite it happening 2 days after purchasing and the fact that I NEVER SENT IT YET. Ugh, annoying.

 

edit: just messaged me and said I needed to send it ASAP because they disputed only one charge, and so they technically still paid for it. I completed the dispute so I'm done. Incredible stuff.

You might cut him a bit of slack. He may be overreacting, but eBay messed up a lot of purchases over the weekend.

I have a comic lot in my cart now awaiting payment. It was already paid, and shipped. At first, when I saw it still there, I thought I didn't complete the purchase, but it was already showing on my credit card.

They were just very demanding and Karen-esque. If they chilled out a bit and chatted with me we could've resolved it w/o disputes.

I once bought a 9.8 slabbed X-Men 240 and it was so yellowed, I pulled up the auction picture thinking maybe he played with the color balance.  Sure enough, it was a different slab (different CGC number), so I did a return.  Seller got pissy with me, but oh well.  I still don't have a 9.8 of that book, but I have a really nice-looking 9.2 that I prefer over the book that that dude had sent.

Every time I bid now, eBay inserts a step where they preload my payment info. Says it will charge that funding source at the end of the auction. Which is problematic for me, if I want to bid on multiple auctions for combined shipping.

Now the seller has to do a partial refund, and I have to trust him to do it, and make arrangements ahead so we agree on how to do it. A PITA for sure.

And I have been on eBay 25 years, always paid very promptly. They are pressuring the wrong buyers. I bid on a lot less stuff now, too much of a hassle. I'm sure I'm not the only bidder/buyer they have hindered. A very stupid company, for sure. Less money for Sellers, less for eBay, a lose-lose.

It only works well on the listings with free shipping. It gets annoying having to message the seller to combine shipping.

Waited until the last day of a Buy It Now auction with 10 watchers, to purchase the book at full price.  Then immediately asked for a refund, because they had found it at a better price.
