Enormous ! How big will it get ?

This is not good IMO. How is a new reader going to know that after issue #6 it then goes to vol 2 #1 and not a 7? Is this a new timeline of the story? If not this makes no sense and sounds like a Marvel tactic to get new people to buy a new all new #1.

doh!

Yep.

Pretty sure that is exactly what it is.

Which may be good very short term, but long term, I'm just not sure...

You've all seen the solicits. Shall I explain a bit then? I've been doing a lot of hand-wringing over the numeration of the series and I've gone back and forth and back again on how to proceed with the series.

Enormous is not a mini-series, it is an ongoing, slated for approximately 10 volumes and 60 issues. In order to reach that goal we must survive and make decisions which, while unpalatable to most everyone here, are a genuine attempt to grow readership. There’s no other motivation – period. Every 6 issues will comprise a Season (arc). The story is continuous throughout and expect time jumps (varied in duration) between each Season. Expect a Field Guide (w/ expanded Colossal) and a Trade paperback wrapping each Season.

Now, some of you suggested that I should not have asked for opinion and input. Of course I should. I’ve shared this thread with all involved with the book (and adaptation) many times already because you’ve all been incredibly, inarguably, vital to the success of this book. Frankly, I agree with you – all, but there’s me the reader/collector with my personal preferences, versus the needs of the book and I’d fire myself if it meant the book could flourish beyond what I’m capable of providing. Ask Mehdi if that statement ain’t true. He’s heard it. Who knows – maybe I’ve made a decision that will get me fired….by me.

- On the one hand, as a reader/collector of comics since 1981, I'm completely in favor of legacy numbering. It's simple, clean and easy to track on a monthly basis. I love it and particularly love milestones.

- On the other, I was presented with pretty compelling sales data that suggests we've got a very real challenge on our hands to grow readership starting the second arc at #7 as opposed to #1. Even with the show announcement and trade sales being decent we need to grow.

- Diamond also offered some good promotional support/outreach to retailers on behalf of Enormous if we were to go with the #1.

I've changed my mind 3 times to date on this and the one thing I keep reminding myself is - the number on the book might change but the story and our commitment to it does not.

Season 2 (Episodes #7-12) is incredibly action packed, full of new characters and staggering Cheggour art. Not to mention some incredible variants and exclusives.

Stick with us and please, always share your thoughts.

I will continue reading.

I enjoy the universe.

I just think long term, legacy numbering was the best choice for long term duration and growth.

But, as you said, I have a different opinion/view than you do, and in the end it is your baby, and you have to make the tough decisions.

Sales data of a new #1 every 6 issues does not equal collecting and consistent readership. New readers will think this is a new mini and not a continuation of the Enormous story let alone confusing as heck when buying trades.

Ugh.

+1

I think it's a neat idea if you're already on board but as a new reader I don't know if it will have the desired effect. I wish you all the best Tim. Thank you for keeping us informed here on the boards. I know there's some decisions that have to be made that many people wont agree with but if you're behind it then I am as well. I look forward to future issues. :):foryou:

Does this mean there's going to be multiple volumes to the Enormous #1 NYCC exclusive collectors club?? :o

:jokealert:

I don't think it's too far fetched at all.

And in the long run, I'm thinking a good ol' Vol 1 #1A CGC 9.8 will be THE book to have.

The "Season 2" approach may entice a bunch of new readers. Leaving people wondering what that means and asking questions about the book. Talk is good. If I were not already into the series I'd be way more apt to pick up a volume 2 #1 than a #7 before I went looking for the earlier prints.

Im in for the 60 no matter what. Hopefully even more! :wishluck:

That is a good point.

Putting the TPB out to "catch-up" new readers who might be priced out of the market for buying #1-6 original issues, and then starting the next story arc at "Season 2" (which is kind of a different approach as opposed to "Volume 2" like everyone else does) might work.

But it does make collecting more confusing though.

I'll still be buying them no matter what, I'll just be more frusterated putting the sets together.

Doesn't The Strain use this format? or something similar? Seems to be working for them. And to be fair if diamond was the biggest problem the last time getting the books out on time, maybe pandering to them a bit will help elevate that a bit.

in any case 60 issues - 10 seasons. sounds great to me no matter how you slice it.

You all have really brightened my day. I'm dead serious.

Oh and Season 2 #1 is 30 pages with a really nice built-in recap that will inform new readers and give current readers a fresh perspective on past events. I'll try and take this approach with each new #1.

The Strain is based on a trilogy of novels, that's why that format works for it. Also, does Dark Horse ever put out a continuing series? I can't think of any off the top of my head
