Greatest GOLDEN AGE Covers Poll, Round One

Maybe a little too much "men in tights" for my liking. But, if it was opened up to all genres, it would have to start with 1,000. So many great covers, so little dough...

It was open to all genres and the organizers deliberately excluded some of the key superhero books to prevent "keyness" being favored over aesthetics. I think this was a good decision as, imho, I don't think there's any big GA key with a great cover. At best they are merely good.

 

Much of the hobby for the last 50+ years has been driven by collectors who are superhero focused and haven't had much interest in or spent time considering non-hero fare. That resulted in more superheros in the Top 100 than I would prefer but, as I mentioned, I don't think it would have ultimately affected the outcome of the final Top 20.

Fun poll.

 

Obviously, there's no way to get a perfect poll on this topic. But, a LOT of my favorite covers were missing. Especially light on Centaurs, DC, Planet, and non-superheros. Far too much Timely for my taste (at a certain point you see too many similarities between the Timely covers).

 

If I were doing this type of poll, I think I would break out by genre and/or publisher for my prelims to get the best of each category against each other in the final.

I did both polls. When I was voting for the ones that I liked, I kind of saw a theme that the covers were portraying. Just like choosing Blonde, Brunette, or Redhead .
