Fiction house anyone?

I find Maurice Whitman's covers VERY appealing. I wasn't aware of it at first, but I realized that all the Fiction House books I really like have covers by the same artist. I think it's unfortunate that I basically had to discover him on my own, as you never hear his name mentioned...

We've talked about him here and there. I bring his name up in the Month thread due to his Fiction House work. Here's part of a write-up:

"For how prolific Whitman was for Fiction House, little is known about the artist. I had always thought he was an older gentleman until I discovered recently that he had an extended career beyond the 50's and Fiction House as his work stretches to the 70's for DC.

Whitman started work in the comics in the 40's with the Iger Studio then freelanced a lot of work still for Iger through the late 40's. Entering the 50's, his main account was for Fiction House and once FH ceased production, Whitman switched most of his output to Charlton carrying him through the late 50's working on any title that was sent his way. In the mid-60's, he is working for Wally Wood and then his comic output ceases until he shows up again in the late 70's and 1980 doing some work for DC, mainly on War books. Aside from this, I have no information on Whitman's background or age."

Now, on this board, TheGoldenAge in mid-June dropped the following info:

"I met Jon Whitman today at my local con. He is the son of Maurice Whitman, who did many of the Fiction House covers in the 40's, along with Jumbo's, Jungle's and a host of other titles. He told some fantastic stories about his dad and other artists of his father's era. "

but failed to provide more info or any contact so that the folks at Alter Ego could interview his son. Here's hoping 893crossfingers-thumb.gif they hooked up with him somehow. I am always open to hear more about Whitman as well.

Great book, btw. thumbsup2.gif

I picked this one up on my lunch hour. Can't wait to read it! A nice surprise, the mark on the top edge is just a scratch, not a tear as listed in the auction.

Awesome book. Always looking for recycling in the FH lines and finally have met the match to the later Sheena 15 (sorry if I've posted it too many times) -

Very nice copy, WP!

It's interesting to compare the two -- same basic image but definitely different artists. I like how the lion is placed in the newer rendition as it seems a more realistic and menacing leap. Also, the bra and the and base of the outfit seem to be a bit skimpier in the new version.

Recent pickup from October (thanks!) This is the 'not Nic Cage reader copy', which I can honestly say is my favorite GA purchase of the last 6 months! Looking forward to starting a run of Planets, now, hopefully some with spines this time. smile.gif

Nice touch to have the gal carry the knife on her arm. I wouldn't want to do anything to tick her off!

You know what October, after looking through the Overstreet Price Guide, I have to agree with you on Maurice Whitman art (especially with the Jungle covers). This Fight Comics #78 is one of my favorite Fiction House covers, and until today I had no clue that it was done by Whitman.

Holy 893censored-thumb.gif! Look at the reds on that cover! Fantastic copy you have there.

He really is underappreciated, isn't he? I wonder if there is a checklist somewhere. It would beat combing through the photojournals looking for his stuff.
