I handed it back and asked him to hold it for 15 minutes while I called my wife. So I stepped aside and made the call.

So, did the dealer NOT hold it for the 15 minutes that you had asked him to?    :censored:

Or was it because your wife had gone on for so long :blahblah:cc:blahblah: about you throwing all of your wad all on one shot, that it was well pass 15 minutes by the time you got off the phone with her?  lol  :censored:

No, not only did not hold it. I was on the phone at the time, but I was willing to pay his full price. But, he sold it to fast talking Ritchie at a discount.

My wife, by the way, is a rather deep pocketed antique dealer. She gets the drill. But we have an agreement. Any money that comes out of our joint account of any significance, needs to be known by both of us.

She has never disagreed because she trusts me and and I rarely need to. I thought the dealer and I had a gentleman’s agreement. He was apparently greedy, in a hurry and no gentleman. I no longer deal with him.

Making money in the short term and losing money and reputation in the long term.

Just as tough at the other end is the last few extremely HTF issues of the Ace run with those rather simple, but beautiful Phantom covers that also simply doesn't seem to show up in the marketplace.  You can definitely throw away the guide when it comes to these later Ace issues with the Phantom covers as I believe they have only shown up once in the marketplace so far with each of them selling for several hundred dollars and then only in mid-grade condition.  :luhv:   :taptaptap:  :taptaptap:  :takeit:

I was referring to the Publisher Ace. (Super Mystery, Lightning, Our Flag ect.)

But, yeah, I've seen Ace #11 bring some serious dough. Always surprises me as I kind of assume The Phantom is kind of a dead character outside of those who covet his books

Definitely my bad here as I thought you was referring to Ace Comics and not the Publisher Ace.

My mind flashed back almost immediately to that late run of Ace Comics  with the Phantom covers when a few of the later issues at long last finally came up for auction and they all still managed to fetch relatively strong prices even though they were only in mid-grade, especially this final issue here:  :luhv:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Superhero, Ace Comics #151 (David McKay Publications, 1949) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages....

A nice bright HTF Phantom cover that sold for a rather surprising $900 or at a price point that was something like 27X condition guide price.  :whatthe:

If you are referring to Publisher Ace with titles like Our Flag, there can really be no hotter or near impossible to find book than Our Flag 5.  hm

It must indeed be a super rare book because both HA and CC don't show any historical sales for this book in their auction archives, although I do believe that CL might have had one in one of their previous Featured Auctions, and if so, a link to this listing would be greatly appreciated.  :wishluck:

Well, looks like we are going to be seeing some blowout record setting prices for this upcoming highest graded Mask 1 and 2nd highest Mask 2 here:  :cloud9:

lf?set=path%5B2%2F3%2F9%2F2%2F7%2F239277

lf?set=path%5B2%2F3%2F9%2F2%2F7%2F239277

Will be interesting to watch these 2 copies from the newly designated Promise Collection pedigree in the upcoming Heritage Signature Auction to see where they finish up, although I believe the sheer volume of books from this new pedigree just might keep prices down a bit, because there is just so much money that can go around for these books here.  hm  (shrug)

Especially since most of the other books from the early batches in this new pedigree collection have been graded into the CGC high 9's, so these 2 books here would appear to be downside outliers from a condition grading point of view.  :p  :takeit:

Highest graded blue copy of Mask 1 maybe.  The Mile High was a 9.6.

I love Mask, but looks like it may turn into one of those books that is offered in every single auction.  There’s a couple in Clink right now, and one in High Grade Comics. Could be this is a temporary thing, given the recent elevation to nosebleed prices. Or could be their appearance in the market may diminish.  It’s a who knows.

But right now I put the books in the category of Bat 1: you can always find one or two on the market.

and I was seriously thinking about making a move on these beautiful books, but Gator just got his hooks in me on something else. There’s always something else, right?

Sorry, my bad here as I was referring to just the unrestored Universal copies of Mask 1 here.  :sorry:

If you include the restored copies, then this Promise Collection copy would be #4 on the list since there's 2 copies in CGC 9.6 restored including the Church copy here, and then followed by another in CGC 9.4 restored.  (thumbsu

Nevertheless, it will still be interesting to see what this newest copy goes for in terms of its pricing level.  hm  :taptaptap:

The only thing I know for sure is it will go for more than I could afford. :whee:

One thing that may have triggered the run up in prices was the sale of the Ohio copy on CConnect. It was slabbed as a 6.0, but it looked very strictly graded; I think that bidders realized that and bid accordingly. So it looked like a 6.0 was worth $12K or $13K, but the real situation was that a book that would be an easy 8.0 if pressed and resubmitted was worth $12K to $13K to the top two bidders. That's one problem with GPA; you can't tell which sales were for books with obvious upgrade potential and which ones were for books that had been maximized.

This just ended on the Bay.

Mask #2 - CGC 1.8 - $3400.

I assume the seller would be none too pleased with this result as the listing description states that the current market value for this book (in this grade, I would assume) is $5,500 to $6,000.

Then again, maybe his current FMV was artifically set on the high side in order to encourage higher bids from prosective bidders.  (shrug)

Just saw this thread and took a quick gander at rue ongoing auction.

The #1 in 8.5 with OWW pgs is up to $46800 (with BP).

The #2 in 7.5 with OWW pgs is up to $10500 (with BP).

Both have 13 days to go.  Safe to say that as expected the #1 will shatter all records.

I’ve always wondered, are there actually 2 Church copies??
