And with Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) the production budget is rumored to be as high as $195M (Money magazine). But I used the middle-of-the-road figure of $162M (Variety). Because - you know - with MCU films I always select the highest number possible.

The multiplier may also need some adjustment based on the facts that marketing cost and spends are skyrocketing.

And has the break even multiplier been adjusted to reflect the reduced profits associated with International ticket sales (China in particular).

given that A-M 3 did $40M in China vs $125M for A-M 2, the multiplier is actually slightly less horrible than it looks

If you want to really get into the weeds, the much more accurate multiplies based on AMC corporate filling are something like this.

Domestic around 55%

General international 42%

China between 20% to 25%

I have seen Ant-Man 3, and unfortunately I can see where the story complexity of the Multiverse would confuse general audiences. Where I very much enjoyed Ant-Man 1 and 2 (to me films that brought a fun twist to the MCU), this felt like forced franchise-building for future productions. To include a villain that just regenerates when needed to overcome the heroes' accomplishments. Like some have stated, limited to no stakes.

Jonathan Majors is a very strong performer. So it is a shame what is going on with his life. But his Kang motivations could be confusing to non-comic book viewers to the point it could feel less relevant to the major plot point made (he needed to defeat the other variants). It just felt like basic big bad needing to be overcome, heroes find a way, yay we won. But did we?!

Now more than ever I get the 'B' CinemaScore, and the less-than-stellar box office results. It's a story that require more connecting the dots. Including how the people of the Quantum Realm came together (and why audiences should care).

I do hope the box office leads to stronger Marvel Studios go-forward lessons learned. Doctor Strange 2 and Wakanda Forever allowed for, "Well - they made a bunch of money!" Yet they already evidenced the problems developing with this franchise-first story design.

If this movie were made by DC, it’d be in the low 20s on Rotten Tomatoes. I can’t even give this an “ok” rating.

Cringy woke stuff in the first few minutes gave me Falcon and Winter Soldier vibes - and I should have listened. Thankfully, like FWS, they abandoned the social commentary, but it wasn’t a good way to start the show.

Kang’s powers: He can levitate! He has telekinesis! He can teleport! He can shoot energy blasts from his hands! He can create things out of thin air! How does he do this? He’s smart? He’s a scientist? He uses future tech? Who knows! It’s never explained and that’s the fun of it!

The limited backstory we’re given on Kang in Loki and Quantumania is some mush-mouthed emo-influenced, shoe-gazing rambling delivered by a boring actor. He stunk in Loki, he stinks here and the end credit scene is so horrible, I can’t believe they put it in.

I hate chastising a movie like this, because I’d rather simply be entertained the two hours I put into something and just leave it be if it’s not good. But this movie was really bad - and If the MCU is going to keep pushing Kang, it’s gonna be a rough Phase 5.

To be fair, Janet does mention that, "he wields technology centuries beyond what we can even fathom". His power level is completely inconsistent, though, and there's no explanation for that.

If you take the focus off of Cassie and Kang, and instead wrote it to center around the two title characters and MODOK (with a good character design), I could see the potential in this movie idea. Kang comes in after MODOK's failures, to trap Scott and Hope in the QR, which he admits to torturing/killing them when he sees the surviving trio in Avengers 5. This gives Cassie a heartbreaking backstory which audiences would connect to, and could make her a focal piece of Avengers 6.

Instead, they tried writing Cassie as the sassy know-it-all wannabe-Iron-Woman. They obviously can't write that character, so they should stop trying.
