Looks like it’s Mask 1 and Matt Baker that lifted the genre

Yes indeed, because if you take out just the Mask 1 and the Seven Seas 5, you go instantly from a big plus 23% all the way down to a big negative 32%.  OUCH!!!  :tonofbricks:

There's a Promise Jumbo Comics #133 (CGC 9.2) in this week's Heritage weekly auction.  It previously sold for $1800 in April 2022.  What will it go for now?

Jumbo Comics 133, not Jungle Comics 133.

$1000.

i think you mean Jumbo 133.

And IMO that still seems too much given the history of all sales of Jumbo/Jungle/Fight etc.  But who knows, 2 bidders might get into it over a HG FH GA GGA with nice pages. Nice book, a keeper.

HA has taken no haircut on this collection either in the first round or the realists. Probably one of their most profitable group of auctions. And one of the best marketing efforts to date.

I don’t know if they were buyers or if it is even legal to do so. I do know that Texas law makes it OK to shill auctions.

That is one of several reasons I stay away from their auctions.

I don’t belittle this incredible collection. But I do have opinions on grading, the story and the crazy individuals who bought these books at insane prices and fell for the hype.

It might be legal to shill in person, but it would be a federal crime—wire fraud—to shill bid in an online auction. Texas law doesn't trump federal law.

I really don't understand the business model of "Doug".  He's been buying literally every Dell/Gold Key that's come on Heritage during the past 3 years, and then flipped them within a year or so on Heritage.

He seems to have been the buyer of just about every Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Korak and Turok I sold on Heritage in 2022.  The results of his resales of these books have been pretty mixed.

No matter how you look at it, those are pretty serious prices for Lone Ranger books. Westerns are dead you know.

But when it comes to Promise books, obviously, anything brings big money…

Was just looking at Terry Toons 38 sales and came across this beauty of a price drop from last year. Surprised it tanked soo much in one year.

Based upon all previous sales of this book in this similar high grade condition range, the real surprise is why did it sell for such a ridiculous amount on the first go round?  hm  :screwy:

Especially when the amount that it sold for on its second go round appears to be much more in line with what it should have gone for.  (shrug)

Is that Terry Toons the biggest percentage drop?

Well, according to the masterful tracking worksheet below which was compiled by our very own @MasterChief, the answer would be NO:  :gossip:

Looks like the Terry-Toons had a percentage drop of only a mere 72% and was beaten out by a few other books, with the biggest being a tied for highest graded CGC 9.4 copy of 'Tec 126 which sold for a silly $43,200 before coming back down to reality and selling for a still strong price of $7,800 or a percentage drop of 82%.  Definitely not as bad of a percentage drop as some of the high flying and hugely popular tech stocks from a couple of years ago or the Canadian cannabis stocks which shall we say went up in a puff of smoke once governmental legalization of weed was officially approved back in 2017/18 or whenever.  :tonofbricks:  :tonofbricks:

Then again, there were also the rare and odd home runs with gains of 100% or more like the Plastic Man which had a bump up of 200% as it went from a mere $1,200 on its first go round as a CGC 9.2 graded copy up to a whopping $3,600 as a CGC 9.6 graded copy.  Unlike what's happening in the rest of this CPR focused marketplace, it looks like there were very very few successful attempts at playing the CPR game with the Promise books as only a fractional 7 out of the 262 resales were successfully regraded.  The CPR regrade that I found interesting was the one for the 'Tec 39 which got bumped DOWN from a CGC 4.5 grade down to a CGC 4.0 for its second go round, but was yet still able to garnered a 81% increase in price as it went up from $4,320 up to $7,800.  (:  :applause:

I kept my Promise Collection bids within reason targeting specific books wanted and was never awe struck by the hype or eyebrow raising grades which ...apparently... quite a few early auction bidders were.  The heroic tearjerker story certainly left a lot of folks enthralled with the pedigree or melodrama behind it, but there were just too many omissions in the story and efforts to keep the original owner(s) and family anonymous provided too many red flags for my liking.  It's a shame that some of the prices have dropped significantly (the finger pointing for this is understandable), but I don't think Promise Collection overall value deflation is a market correction, but rather a specific pedigree correction.
