Wow, I really gotta keep up with the slang.

This modern "grading" discussion is pretty wild.

My problem with grading is you used to be able to hire some kids (or sometime old people who dislike their spouse) to flip fast-food burgers for maybe three fiddy and a ball of string and some 'life experience' that would educate them to show up, decently dressed, and eventually lead to a real yob. But now you gotta pay them someone's idea of a life wage.  Sheesh.

Now, there is some truth to both sides.  For example:

 

  • The cost of my parents home on Long Island was about 2.5x his annual salary. 
  • I live a half mile away from them.  We are in the same neighborhood with the same home values.
  • The cost of my home at the time that I bought it was almost 4x my annual salary and I got it on a deep discount and their home is bigger. 
  • I also point out that I make more than my dad does if my dad was doing what he did in today's world.
  • The cost of living is far greater now than it was in the 1970's while the United States was still living off the economic coattails of the boom after WWII. 

I easily grant this younger generation that.  College, housing, the cost of living are getting tougher and they face obstacles that no other generation has had to face at least from what I see on Long Island. 

However, here is what @Prince Namor and @Dr. Balls have said offers a lot of truth:

We have hired some of the Gen Z / later millennials.  It is mind numbing.  I detailed one of them that we hired and fired around seven years ago.  He would miss project deadlines despite being given enough time.  When we saw him struggle we would help him and then he would say he had it then sit there and still do nothing. I remember the first responsibility we gave him we would work on.  He would call in the day we were going to work on something together as a group and then we would find out he was at the beach.   

Another one we hired faked a medical emergency for a month so she could spend time with her girlfriend in California.  I get to sit in on a few things and remember when her jaw dropped as she realized that one of our other coworkers went to college with her girlfriend and was friends with her on facebook.  Our coworker saw the whole month long "sickness" laid out in the vacation photos posted on FB.  If someone ditches a day or takes a mental health day, cool.  No one is going to rat you out for that.  You take a month to screw around claiming you are sick while everyone else has to carry your absent weight?  No good. 

Now, those are extreme examples and we have had a few Gen Z / late millennials that have been strong performers and innovative introducing technological elements and outside the box thinking that have made everything stronger.   One that we hired two years ago shows so much promise that I flat out tell the bosses that they are phenomenal and literally "the future". But sadly they are few and far between.

But for the most part? The majority that come in to work just doesn't want to get the work done. 

  • If you have a job you don't come in hung over the next day because you wanted to go out with your friends.  What I did at 18-21 is not what I did from 22 onward when I started my professional career.   I have had 25 year olds incapable of working because they are nursing a party hangover. 
  • I personally do not care that your BFF is in town for the first time since you graduated college together.  The due date for something was presented months ago.  If you left things to the last minute and didn't get it done and now an emergency comes into play you are going to lose your job. 
  • You don't tell me that you completed something and when I check up on it, I find out it was not even started then complain that you are being checked up on.   If something is due, and you were given adequate amount of time to complete it, it needs to be done. 

Before I worked in my current career field I was:

  • Lifeguard
  • Groundskeeper / Maintenance
  • McDonalds
  • Retail with Disney
  • Retail with Sears (That was the party)
  • Coupla other things... 
  • Current career. 

Every job I learned something.  Every job I found something of value to build upon.  Every job.

McDonalds taught me VERY valuable lesson of, "If you do not make the hash browns, there will be no hash browns."  If you don't do it, it won't get done. 

Sure, people have seen me complain about my job and I am up at all hours sometimes.  I have some regrets in certain aspects.  Perhaps I spent a little too much time working while ignoring certain things around 10-15 years ago and I am VERY lucky someone is gave me another change to make things right five years ago. However,  I do work and work hard.  Buzzetta here gets sheet done.  I also get paid.

BTW Specifically at @Dr. Balls.

I had off today so I decided to bike and walk the beach on Fire Island around 10-11 miles round trip.  As a reward when I do this, I go for lunch at one of the restaurants in this town called Ocean Beach.  Now I am off so it's me flying solo.   So yes, since I am by myself I am people watching and eavesdropping.  

The entitlement exhibited by the Gen Z moms and dads with toddlers and the way that they treat the waitstaff was abhorrent.  I have no idea what you go through in dealing with this crowd but it got to the point that I was going to tell them to knock it off (as I tend to do sometimes - like I've told Greggy I am fully aware that someone will shoot me) but... someone beat me to it.
