ASM #252 CGC 9.8 Record Sale - something fishy going on? - Holder Tampering Incident confirmed by CGC

Just listened to the Podcast and pulled the old listing up on terrapeak (only shows sale price and one photo no seller or buyers I’d). Still not happy comparing photos with such different contrast and color but given totality of circumstances seems likely that CGC doesn’t grade again with re-encapsulation even when the first grading failed to make note of something as obvious as a MJ insert.   🙄 Did submitter swap books out?  Sure looks like someone did and it was given the CGC imprimatur with apparently not a care in the world.

Just curious if someone knows the answer to this question:  The book is referred to as a Mark Jeweler Newsstand...are there also Mark Jeweler copies that are not Newsstand?

No

But I bet if CGC only noted the Mark Jeweler version, and NOT Newsstand also (Newsstand presumed because it is MJ), people would get upset that it didn't say Newsstand.

Lol 😅 it's a stretch, but would take the label printing scenario out of the equation. Food for thought

The search of his "sold" items, shows a majority of the books have special labels, and all of his sales are keys.

This, for a guy with feedback less than 300.

The circumstantial evidence is piling up in my mind..

If he has a way to reseal the cases, he can either have done minor damage to resealed cases, or just asked for new special labels.

Either way, the scrutiny of the books inside the cases is then considerably less.

Consider this.

The book sold for $2,247 in August, as a normal newstand 9.8, but was graded on 6/26/23.

Why would that submitter have put it up for sale, if it was supposed to be a 9.8 with an MJ insert??

The story is supposedly "sent back to CGC, because they missed the MJ insert".

Didn't someone say that the seller bought a lower grade MJ insert on ebay?  We should see if we can get photos of it.

Yes, I did, but it was "may have".

The sale was on August 13th, but one photo should show what's needed to see.

GPA does not say if it was Ebay, but it was for $510

Using terrapeak (thanks as I didn’t know about this before this thread) these are all the high grade 252s that sold on eBay with mj inserts last year that still have photos available for screen shot. Any bullseyes?

None of these copies seem to be the one that’s living in the 9.8 CGC case unfortunately.

Let’s also not forget it’s possible he bought a newsstand copy and married a MJ insert from the same era into the book. Scammers will scam and CGC has proven they’re no experts.
