I'm wondering about dart boards...as Bizzaro would say. "?these am hard"

    Guesses in

    These am hard very.

Sharon, if dart boards are a thing, I've hit the bloke doing the scoring five times this round.

Do you think there's a book below 7.5 anywhere in our future? If I see another ten high grades with camera glare spines on black backgrounds I'm packing it in. Probably!

It takes me a long time to get out the dart board, darts and blindfold to determine what wild guess of a grade I am going to submit on these seemingly impossible books.

I know. We're all doomed this time, Hudson. The winner will be whoever's the luckiest guesser. Unless it's me of course, then it will be down to the application of long-honed skills and judgement.

I don't remember them at all, but I was probably off the Doctor by then.  I remember the Brain of Morbius as being really gruesome and scary (i.e. brilliant) but after that I was out. I think I watched intermittently, but after Lalla Ward's comedy regenerations and the robot dog, I was out for 25 years.

    Masta!

I know what you mean, the show was capable of delivering the most extreme highs and lows. My love for it is well documented elsewhere, but at it's best, it was the best.

    4. Black ink does not always bleed through cover stock, it depends on the marker, and quality of the paper coating. Sometimes when you hold a book with color touch at an angle with light reflecting on it, you can tell where black marker has been applied as its reflectivity differs from the black ink.

Be nice to hear if that's the case, yes.

As certain as I can be without holding the book in hand, all evidence points to the webbing being colored in with marker, and would be very surprised if CGC reversed their notation. It would be helpful if they were more specific about the where of color touch in their notes.

I love a production / printing error more than anyone, but that is the front runner for me here as things stand, without having the book in hand.

This isn't a shirt per se but seems to belong here. This guy's tie got more drawing love than some entire comic covers!

Always wear your best tie when you're giving your best girl a ring in an apple tree with a weirdo sulking behind you. Incidentally, the look on his face says he'll be secretly filming her ring later tonight with that hidden camera tie pin of his.

  6. I don't know the answer to this one. Two of the explanations put forward seem plausible (two black plates / ink marker pen) but it's hard to say without the book in hand. I've always been interested in the order that the plates are laid down. To my logical brain, the black K plate should be done last to 'seal' the image but others in this thread have suggested otherwise.

If we take a look at these two old Spidey's of mine, it looks to me like what shows as red on the cover appears to be sitting above the black in the right hand images:

In the left hand images, the black K plate appears to have been applied last to 'frame' the image correctly. I'd love to hear an expert's take on what happened there.

Returning to the Spanish Spidey, the cover paper stock looks very glossy. Is it possible that a weak marker pen applied to the cover would not bleed through? If not, then the only explanation left is BriD's earlier double K plate error scenario (although I'm mindful of rjpb's thoughts on how how scruffy the curves are).

but the biggest surprise to me was the ASM 252. There is about 1/4" tear w 1 1/2" crease along with spine ticks, large scuff all color breaking. In addition, it is just an overall dingy copy for a modern book. That book should never be better than 8.0 and I would personally grade it at 7.5.

I'm glad you said that as I thought I was the only one who undergraded it. I went for 7.5 too, but on the basis that I'd call it a 7.0, so CGC would go higher.
