  1. Afternoon :)

    I love this.

I thought I'd search around for other 1959 WDL books, to see if there were any other Dell UKPV heralding ads, and I happened across this western digest:

    Gunlaw.thumb.jpg.fbe2a74e8c68b19b29ef312d6f26c722.jpg Gunlawb.thumb.jpg.51690788c4f2adefee9140229a62cb28.jpg

The back cover is for the shilling titles that were carrying the UKPV ad, including my Flash #3, so I bought it blind just to see what was inside.

    pat.gif.bccfd7945574fa9d6f23a2982483ce40.gif

A Pat trip later and what do we have but another, digest size 'coming in March' ad:

    Gunlawi.thumb.jpg.b60fef82fd59f07fd43888605c5e38ab.jpg

Trouble is, the Gunlaw is dated 1958 (or MCMLVIII in old money).

So which 'March' are talking about here?

The GCD says the Gunlaw reprints the April/May '59 Gunsmoke #14 by Dell:

    https://www.comics.org/issue/105618/#357908

1958 books don't tend to reprint 1959 books so I can only assume that the date in the Gunlaw is wrong, and should be 1959. Or MCMLIX, in old money.

Either way, great to find another confirming advert for Dell UKPVs.

    All good fun

Keefer did the interior artwork for the story "Monju Island" for sure (see screenshot below from CB+).  He even signed it, but no such signature on the cover.  Also found this earlier where they mention that Al Gordon did work for the Monty Hall of the US Marines title, but I don't think GCD mentions him anywhere (unless I missed it).  Could just be that GCD is wrong.  Who knows?

Maybe he added the top of the lookout tower roof...

I suspect his memories are as good it we'll ever get, but I'm not convinced he's a reliable narrator.  From the 2015 interview:

Will: Were there any connections between yourself and [the other UK publishers of Marvel, DC etc] .

AC: No there were no connections whatsoever.  I didn't come into contact with any of them.  The only sad part was when Mr. Miller past away....they asked would you be interested in having a look at what was in the warehouse.  I said yes.  I remember being shown in and it was just like the vultures had been there. There was nothing at all.  So that was it, no, I didn't come into contact.

However, right through the 60's, his comics were printed in Oadby by Jensons, which was owned by T&P.  It seems odd to me that having been asked if there were any connections to World, Miller and the other publishers, he doesn't mention this 12 year connection to Thorpe & Porter.  Either he's forgotten or he never knew that T&P owned Jensons.

Maybe his memory just needs jogging.

Yes, there are probably fans out there who know more about the history of The Beatles than the two remaining members do. That's the way of it. It's one of the reasons that I've always taken donkeys years old recollections with a pinch of salt. Apart from people like Albert's of course, who wrote stuff down.

From what I've been able to find so far, and assuming it's two different people as @Get Marwood & I suggested, it could be Mo/Moe/Morris Marcus and Al Gordon who seemed to have worked together on a few stories back during that era (40s-60s).  They both worked on war-related stories, as well.

    We're getting there.....

Wow. Nice.  Yes, it would almost be worth the money just for the chat.  I have a horrible feeling that all the questions I would like to ask him, he would long have forgotten the answers to.

Maybe we should put a few together and I'll send them to him, what do you think? If you haven't already seen it, there's a good interview in From The Tomb #18 and 19 which gives a flavour of what he remembers (albeit 20 years ago). And the 30th Century video interview from 2015 of course.

  6. I posted this over in the Alan thread, but those of you who don't go there might like to see it - or even buy it...

I'm sorely tempted, if only to spend 30 minutes on Zoom with the man himself!

Great to see he's still with us, and looking good :)

Just tried to amend it and no matter how many times I deleted the picture AND the one in 'choose files' at the bottom, it just kept putting it back in.

The boards can be quirky like that sometimes Rich. Sounds like you tried this, but make sure you delete the image in the body of the post itself, but also in the 'choose files' field too (see below):

    That usually does it.

The picture above is from the eBay listing I won - I'll replace it when the book arrives

Here it is, along with my copy of Flash Space Age Comic #3:

Crime-Buster #2, dated MCMLIX, 'Commencing in March' back cover.

Flash Gordon Space Age Comic #3, dated MCMLIX, 'Now on Sale' back cover.

There are other WDL titles to check, Brick Bradford and Manhunt being two, but I've only found the 'Commencing in March' blurb on the Crime-Buster #2 so far. The ad appears on the last four issues in the six book Flash run, and the 'Now on Sale' wording appears on all of them.

    Sooper :)

Indeed.  I think it came up a buttload of times.  I certainly captured it a few.  As you said about Albert's one (though that 9d and Albert's one are not the same comic).

I think you misunderstood me Richmond - in your post with all the copies, the first and last copies are the same 9d stamped image. I thought that was by mistake.

    Probably an after-market sale?

Who knows, Yoz. Miller occasionally used branded and unbranded 6d stamps. Maybe there was a reason for that, or significance to them, maybe there wasn't. I've not studied the ones that appear during T&P stamping runs to any great degree to reasonably determine if they are even theirs.
