I purchased a box of #1 issues back in 1991 which included a First Ninja Turtles… Although at the time it was really hard to tell which printing it was… I think I opened it twice not knowing what to look for… Now because of the internet etc etc… it wouldn't be hard to get the correct info or look directly on the inside cover… whatever it may have been at the time I sold that mysterious box in the "Recycler" in Orange County(for $40)… I think at the time I decided it was impossible for it to be a first print… I was a teenager at the time and there is no way of taking a time machine and my memory is not sharp enough to double check… but I trust myself and really doubt it was a First printing… I will say that at the time it still was considered something special esp. since their popularity was still at their peak… I remember how comic stores where back then in the late 80s and early 90s a lot of nostalgia for me looking back… I think I wanted a Hulk 181 back in 89 for an impossible $60 if I can remember right… I also remember when the watchmen came out and all those "graphic novels" where popping up… There where no "games" tables at the time also… and I would quietly scan through the new releases popping questions every now and then to whichever clerk was around at the times..

That was a steal on the 9.6 for sure

GPA shows two prior sales this year of $8,100 and $7,700 (and a $7,000 sale from December), so this wasn't really a steal. And while the 8.0 price was high, it only beat the last GPA sale by about $300.

Historically speaking, upper-mid grade and high grade slabbed copies of TMNT #1 all sell in the same price ranges - it's a clear indication that people just want to own a copy of this book and grade is a secondary concern.

Cerebus #1 is the same way ...

First prints are totally out of my price range when it comes to #1 and I haven't found a decent enough #2 so I'm sticking with a third print of #1 and a 2nd print of #2 with 1st prints of #3 and #4. I can't play in your sandbox but I can throw sand!

So why is number 1 so damn valuable?

I've been in the hobby for a year so i don't know the whole story to the quick rise on this comic, is it short printed?

How long ago did it go up in value, also is this a concrete now, or is all hype due to the movie, or is this really a $4000+ in 9.6+

It's not just movie hype. Sure, it's heated up recently; however, TMNT #1 has been valuable for a long time.

You would have to go back to the year 2004 to buy a TMNT #1 CGC 9.6 for $4000 according to GPA.

Low supply, high demand. (thumbs u

Here's my baby. Got it signed at Calgary Expo this past April and it just showed up at my door! I've loved the Turtles since I was a kid. It was amazing to meet Kevin in person! He was awesome! He took time to take pics with my kids and I and was incredibly kind.
