Missing comic now turned up on eBay, seller silver-acre. Help

338 posts in this topic

Leaving this particular case to one side for the moment. The message to all comic buyers worldwide is simple;

DON'T BUY FROM SILVER ACRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the main reason he stopped doing shows is to avoid face to face confrontation with people he has shafted. Much easier to hide behind eBay.

This is worth repeating on multiple occasions. (thumbs u

I am currently having issues with this seller. There are five books I purchased from them and they sent me the correct issue of the books, but sent lower grade copies of the books. Like a bait-n-switch. Here are the excuses they gave me -

Dear silver-acre,

Upon inspection of each of the books I can see that each of them are not the as described. They have writing on them, one has tape on back cover, tears on covers, etc. You had described these as "like new" and to refer to the pictures, but these are not the same books as in the pictures. Except for the Battle Action Force Annual.

Dear blightning11,

Hi Jeff, Thanks for the email, there is a problem with ebay Us that shows items from other contries incoretly, the items is listed as used 2nd hand all over the world apart from on ebay Us and for some reason when displayed on ebay us it converts all international used listings to new, ebay know about this as its been an on and off problem for over a year now so i am unsure why they have not fixed the bug, british comics were sold through newsagaets who used to put the names on the comics for the paper boys to deliver, its the norm and accepted in the uk, if you want to contact ebay is the Us just to confirm what i say no problem, just want you to be sure it was listed at my end as used 2nd hand, as a sign of good will i would be happy to refund you £5 or the comics you are not happy can be posted back regular air mail and i will refund in full including the cost of the return postage, let us know,

Regards Darryl

They are not as he says. His auctions state to use the picture provided to show they quality of books. They were not the same books. I want the books, though, as they are not easy to find.

Darryl is talking bollocks, the majority of these went to news agents and were unmarked. The minority will have names written on them and it isn't "the norm".

Absolutely. There are more copies that don't have names on them in my experience. The named copies were those reserved by local newsagents for customers who had ordered them regularly (kinda like a pull list) but most went onto the shelves.

I just got this from Silver-acre -

Dear blightning11,

Hi Thanks for the email, what we actually do is have a stock photo of the comic and when an order is being pulled it comes from the back stock until there are no other copies available and then the last one we pull is in a seperate file and when we get to that one we delete it off ebay, somtimes the copy sent is better that the one in the photo, most comics grade an average of fine so there is no real problem, as stated the problem occors when the item transfers from ebay uk to ebay Us, if you view the listing on ebay uk site the listing reads second hand but for some reason when it shows on ebay Us it says new, this is a problem with ebay Us and happens right across the whole collectable side of uk listings, i had a conversation with another uk toy sellar who said thet they had also had this problem with a second had figure,, why not actually take two minuts to view an item from the same listing on ebay uk then on ebay us, these are £2 1970s British comics that we are talking about, also in the uk its common knowledge that a large percentage of the uk editions have pen names on , they were put there by news agents when delivering to customers back close to publication, collectors of British comics in the uk understand this and have no issue and normally if bothered will request copies without pen names but the American system is different and customers are not familiar with , i sell a lot of British weekly comics to the Us and its not been to much of a problem , recently you complained and belive that you got satisfaction with you complaint and the other guy who i figure is the person you are talking about , who got a full refund and then gave bad feedback even though the discription did state item is 2nd hand(please check this from ebay uk side) so as it looks like ebay Us have known about this problem for well over 12 months and done nothing about it i will go in and change the listing to explain better and state stock picture and odd issues may have pen name

So what is he going to do to appease a customer with a valid gripe.

Nothing, he is passing the buck to blame ebayUS.

At the end of the day you did not get what you wanted and he should rectify that.

But he wont.

Just to clarify.

When weekly UK Marvels arrived at Newsagents (newsstands) a TINY percentage would be reserved by customers or delivered out by a paper boy with the daily newspaper. These often had the customers name written on them.

The VAST MAJORITY of books would be put on the racks unmarked and sold.

He is talking and also using written English in his replies that I haven't seen outside of Chaucer.

SilverAcre is the worst dealer in the UK. He doesn't give a toss about the customer. He has a vast inventory and not a clue how to grade a comic.

I don't know how he continues to make money. Who is buying from him? Surely the more people are shafted by Darryl the more people spread the word.

But still he continues to trade.

I will also add that his website is awful.

If you want to buy from the UK go to ComicanaDirect!!!

+1 to all of the above.

10 of my favourite comics in my collection have the name of one of my schoolfriends who had them delivered.

If they weren't reserved by newsagents, they would be unmarked.

If anyone is looking for UK Marvel reprints and would like one of us UK Boardies to keep our eyes open for copies put a post up in WTB and then pop a quick post in the UK thread in permanent Polls and FAQ's to let us know it's there.

Those UK Marvel Super-Heroes books were fantastic. I lost my set several house moves ago and still miss them :(

And finally - NEVER USE SILVER ACRE

+2

I have had two unpleasant experiences with this dude, one being when he listed a rare X-Men variant, I paid for it and he sent me the regular issue and wondered what my problem was but if I wanted to I could return it, and he gave me the bollocks about listings and stock photos as mentioned before in the thread.

Secondly as I live about 45 minutes from Chester and was thinking about changing collecting from X-Men to something else, I phoned him up to ask if he would be interested in buying 200 odd CGC'd X-Men (lowest graded 9.4, most 9.8) from #100 - #400, he sighed and informed me that it would be not worth his time buying this kind of as he specialises in silver age books. I laughed and asked him if he actually looked at his inventory, if he thinks my CGC graded collection was rubbish and he told me not to waste his time again and hung up.

Lesson learnt, no more Silveracre purchases

He does have an interesting style. Chaucer, off his Lithium.

To me, it's more reminiscent of E E Cummings. That entire paragraph was once sentence!

Definitely light on punctuation and capital letters. Here, not so much 'avant-garde' or 'stream of consciousness' as 'can't be arsed' , of course.

Lot of words, though. Volume over quality. Quite appropriate.

Indeed. A fine line between the archaic, and the illiterate of today.

This is in all his comic listings:

CONDITION

Most items are in good condition, but please view the pictures to judge for yourself, as grades and conditions of items we sell may vary. The majority of stickers visible are on the bag, not the book. If you're bothered, e mail in advance to check. Please e mail any questions in relation to grade BEFORE bidding.
